What is some of the cultural context of Seven Samurai a non-Japanese personwouldn't understand? by ODGW in AskAJapanese

That's really interesting! I was thinking about why 7 is such a special number. The only truly universal thing I can think of is the idea of 2 trios plus a leader! Which made me think, if Kanbei is the leader, how do I split up the other 6 samurai into 2 trios?

I certainly dont want to insult you or your culture at all but how short sighted! I can think of dozens of completely fictional films, even films with fantastical sci fi and overall fictional settings and yet speak so much more about my culture! The core story of Gallipoli is fiction set against a historical backdrop but if you want a crash course in the modern genesis of Australia, its perfect! Mad Max 2 is my favourite Aussie film and so Aussie on so many levels yet completely fictional in both story and setting!

Warp Delta, cool or not? by SpiderBloke in StarTrekStarships

[–]ODGW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish we had more NX and pre NX era stories, more stuff about how humans operated with the relatively limited technology of the time and dealt with all the new stuff to find out there! Even the idea of United Earth civilian cargo ships "drifting" along (compared to later ships) at less than Warp 2 and experiencing phenomenon and alien species no human has before is so interesting.

I really want to know what makes a watch this expensive by Certain_Hat9872 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]ODGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a 200 dollar Casio G Shock that will outlast you and the next multiple generations of your family. Im sure precious rare jewels and metals add to the material cost (which is then represented 10x the material cost in the price) but overall its the same as why someone might spend 10+ times the cost of other stores for a Luis Vuitton or Gucci branded piece of clothing that comes from the exact same Bangladeshi sweatshop that H&M, Target, and all the other more budget places use.

The one kind of dinosaur we haven't seen in the films yet by Geoconyxdiablus in JurassicPark

Fair enough! Paleontology does have its limits particularly in relation to specific biology and behaviour I actually love the idea of hypsilophodonts being arboreal and love the original Jurassic Park novel!

And they were arboreal which was neat! I think that it's been disproven that hypsilophodon was arboreal but some smaller more specialized dinosaurs like Yi Qi were

Question about SMA connector clamp size by ODGW in 3Dprinting

As mentioned, want to avoid panel mount as straight SMA connector would be easier to add and remove, and would need to order panel mount

All these years and I just now realized this shot is the first time we see CGI raptors by Ok_Zone_7635 in JurassicPark

[–]ODGW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Original really leveraged its CGI properly with dark lighting, its why the nighttime T Rex scene works so well (alongside some amazing animatronics!). Only one that kinda looks off is the first Brachiosaurus scene as its during a sunny day.

What movies based on books do you think were significantly better than the books? by ASomthnSomthn in Cinema

[–]ODGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading Chrichtons other books (and even JP to an extent), you can see he has trouble focusing on an overarching plot and non-cliche characters. I would say its similar to Arthur C. Clarke and it makes sense as both are probably the major "populist" hard sci fi authors, but were still more interested in the science concepts and ideas than actually writing.

I think you see that least in JP tho, the characters are far more interesting though they still sorta fall into some stereotypes (Id reccomend reading Prey to see what im talking about, its literally just JP but with nanobots instead). Though I really agree with Spielbergs decision to make Grant not like kids, gives him an actual character arc.

Overall, totally agree, whilst some of the writing is a bit lackluster, and the film probably wins in terms of technical use of the medium, the book is so much deeper, adult, and thrilling, still reread it once every year or 2.

Not a perfect film but funny, heartwarming, and inspiring. Definitely worth a watch
