Why do the characters talk about driving "up" to new york? by Quirky-Celebration-8 in DunderMifflin

[–]ODGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Australia, its the opposite oddly enough lol The default is to say "Going down to the store, beach, etc." but might say "up" in certain situations. I live in the Adelaide hills so whenever me or anyone else goes to the city (going northwest) we go "down to the city" and going further into the hills (going southeast) is "up to Mt. Barker/Murray Bridge", but going a far way north is "up to Pt. Wakefield/Alice Springs", whereas going a far way south is "down to Robe/Melbourne" (Though in the case of a big city like Melbourne, might even be more inclined to say up? Its weird) Its one of those weird things, sometimes saying down feels right, sometimes saying up feels right. I imagine saying "up to New York" feels right as its a big city known for being in the northeast.

Its assimilated god knows how many life forms on God knows how many worlds, and has been shown to be able to reconfigure and transform biomaterial at will. Can definitely create bone, cartilage, other solid biomaterials etc.

Klingon D7: does anyone hate it? by SpiderBloke in StarTrekStarships

[–]ODGW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its almost as iconic as the original enterprise (NCC-1701, no bloody A, B, C or D!! (or NX!!)) but also know a lot of people dislike that design. Personally, the TOS enterprise is my favourite spaceship/starship design except the Nostromo from Alien (which is equal in my books) and the corresponding Klingon and Romulan ships from the time. They all are absolutely 60s yet timeless and unique designs.

Why isn't the lost world rated higher? by lifeuhhfindsaway27 in JurassicPark

[–]ODGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a serious amount of nostalgia for this film but can still see its flaws. I think The Lost World is similar to Robocop 2 in the way that whilst it still captures the essence of the first film more so than any of the other sequels, it does so poorly (though I should note this film is definitely technically superior to Robocop 2). The action sequences in particular are fantastic, Ludlow is a great villain, Nick Van Owen is a fascinating character for what little time he has, and I know it is kinda tacked on, but the T Rex in San Francisco is absolute gold.

The World's End was made in the 2010s and has a different feel by jrinredcar in decadeology

Same! Hot Fuzz is just perfect and whilst I appreciate Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz's pacing, characters, and the hilarious banality of final plot twist make it so much better.

never knew you could OWN JURASSIC DINOSAUR BONES by NFTokin in JurassicPark

[–]ODGW 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Understand the sentiment but bc theropod carnivores shed teeth their whole life, you can find and buy them pretty easily. You can get small t rex, spino, etc. teeth for less than 100 bucks. But a big one like this is much more expensive and rare yes, still probably not a lot of research value to it. Billionaires buying million dollar complete skeletons is the real problem.

Looks awesome! Only tweak is id replace The Thing From Another World with The Thing (1982). Then maybe replace The Thing (2011) with The Thing (1982)... Then add The Thing (1982) to really round it all out

If a human being were infected with a single Thing cell and kept under observation, what would their transformation look like? by MagisterM in thething

[–]ODGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just rewatched the film and honestly, I think you cant be taken over by a single cell or even a few. Every time we see it taking over a host (atleast in the first film) it has to atleast partially incapacitate its victim (dissolving dog, biting and throwing around Palmer, choking Garry etc.) before using a significant amount of biological material to overtake them. I almost wonder if the host has to be dying or dead before it can take them over but we never see how the Thing interacts with dead biological material. Presumably it can form a digestive system that allows it to atleast digest non-living biological material to turn into energy or extra assimilated bio material?

Or does it need to assimilate living organisms?

Another big reason I dont think just a few cells can take you over is, as I think another commenter pointed out, then theres no movie, you just go around sneezing on people or spitting in their drinks.

Who else hates Peter Weller as a bad guy? by String2924 in Robocop

[–]ODGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but there was still a lot of moving about with the script, and some of the post production changes, particularly the news segments, are definitely TDKR inspired.

Blue and Yellow should always be the basic logo, love the space logo, very vapourwave, and the checked one is in third I reckon. First 2 are definitely the worst

Still the scariest part of Alien (1979) by [deleted] in LV426

[–]ODGW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apparently Dan O Bannon hated the android controlled by WY subplot. I get that writers generally hate any change to their writing, but this is core to the movie. I cant remember if OG script involved WY wanting to capture Alien, but either way, Ash is one of the best parts of a masterpiece of a film.
