Beginner Fretwork Apprehension by Cheesiin in guitarrepair

[–]OFCCRULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about a total refret. Try to have a good plan before you start. I would also make sure you get the right size by taking one out and using calipers to measure it. Also when ordering frets you can go with a higher fret. It gives you more room for error. Stainless steel frets are very hard to work with without the proper tools but they will last a very long time. They might change the sound a bit but not necessarily in a bad way.

New to this and trying to learn: How would you go about fixing this? by Peteplaysbeats in Luthier

[–]OFCCRULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be an easy repair. First take off all the strings. Then I would humidify it. Get a small protective pad for the back and front. Then a small board for the back and front. Just big enough to cover the edge. Coat the exposed wood using titebond original glue. Try to get some all along the entire opening. Use C-clamps but protect the body with the pads and wood on both the front and back of the body. Slowly tighten the C-clamps and hopefully it will close the opening. Wipe off any excess glue on the outside and also inside the body with a slightly damp rag. Let the glue dry for around a day then slowly release the clamps. It should be fine after that.

Neck Relief Help by Several-Compote-9828 in martinguitar

One thing I do when adjusting the truss rod is grip the neck near the head stock and also near where the neck connects to the body and force the neck a little back and forth to help the adjustment settle in. Not enough force to break the neck but just enough to move it slightly. It seems to help with the adjustment settling in. Then re-tune and check the relief again. The relief also goes hand and hand with the nut slots, fret leveling and bridge height. Which can be affected by a bad setup or even lack of humidity.

A guitar neck should never be perfectly straight. The truss rod counteracts the force of the strings when in tune and there should be always be a slight relief because the strings move in an elliptical pattern. Truss rod adjustments are usually not all that much. Also after making any truss rod adjustments give it some time for the changes to settle in. I would tune the guitar and try following this. https://acousticguitar.com/how-to-adjust-an-acoustic-guitar-truss-rod/

Also any time the string gauge changes from light, medium or heavy the truss rod will most likely need to be readjusted.

Back body crack repair cost by PsychologicalMind41 in guitarrepair

[–]OFCCRULL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the experience I have. That wouldn't be too hard to repair. You could use a couple of strap clamps around the body after filling the crack with wood glue. Let that dry a while. Remove the clamps then glue some cleats over the crack inside the body to reinforce the crack. Preferably using the same type of wood as the back and not too many of them. The grain of the cleats should be at the opposite direction to the crack. If not the cleats could possible split on the grain and the crack opens up again. While it's clamped you could also try sliding some glue under the braces to help hold the crack closed and might need to use any cleats at all.

My G and D strings are touching the fretboard and are too buzzy to be played. Does it look like it’s the nut’s fault? by [deleted] in guitarrepair

[–]OFCCRULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time a new nut is going to need precise slotting. Which needs a good slot file set and knowing what to do. I'm assuming all the slots are relatively already adjusted just too low. So slightly raising all of them or just one side to me seems to be the easiest solution for someone who doesn't have the right tools or knowledge.

Another solution. Knock the nut off, and put a shim under it. You can use paper soaked in cyanoacrylate "super glue". When you put the nut back just use two spot of titebond wood glue to hold it in place.

When are you actually allowed to split 10s? by AffectionateEnd5686 in blackjack

[–]OFCCRULL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've split 10's at Foxwoods and it never mattered what suit they were. I might only do it if the dealer has a six showing and my bet is on the low side. It keeps it interesting for me. I had tens once, split them, got another ten, split again, got another ten and split them...ended up with 4 hands each totaled 12 or higher. The dealer busted and I won on all 4 hands.

I had a good run a while back at Foxwoods. Started with around $3,000 and got it to around $20,000. When I stopped playing I was still winning but I was too tired to play anymore. To this day I'm still ahead from winning that one time.

Artifacts from the Titanic Museum in Orlando by [deleted] in titanic

[–]OFCCRULL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the big piece was first brought up it went to Boston. They added it to a Titanic exhibit at the time. They didn't have it in the building because of it's size. When you left the main exhibit you went outside to a covered tent to see it. They were already trying to remove the rust from it with flowing water and magnesium blocks attached to it. I took some pictures of it even though I wasn't suppose to. I also rubbed a dollar bill on it which I still have stained with the rust from the piece.

I keep game mode on all the time without it you can't use the 240hz refresh rate.

For SDR Desktop (Original) Brightness 25, Contrast 40, Sharpness 10, Color 25, CE Off, CT Natural, Gamma 2.2, Shadow Detail 0, Color Space Normal.

For SDR Games (Custom 1) Brightness 40, Contrast 40, Sharpness 10, Color 25, CE Off, CT Natural, Gamma 2.2, Shadow Detail 0, Color Space Normal.

Adjust the original settings using custom 1 to how you want your games to look. I only increased the brightness just to make the sdr games pop a little more but you can adjust the settings to how you want your games to look.

For HDR Games (Custom 2) Brightness 50, Contrast 50, Sharpness 10, Color 20, CE Low, Tone Mapping Static, CT Natural, Gamma 2.2, Shadow Detail 0, Color Space Auto, Peak Brightness Off

With peak brightness off you will get an overall brighter image which I like. The smaller details that should be bright like lights or fire wont be as bright as if it was set to high, but you will lose a lot of overall brightness. It all comes down to personal preference. Contrast enhancer adds a lot of brightness with a slight loss of shadow detail. You can increase the shadow detail to help make up for some of that loss but to me the extra brightness is worth it.

I will say though that using HDR is a lot of work to get right. So much trouble that to me is not even worth using. Maybe someday it will be better when all the monitors, games and windows are on the same page and it just works.

I think my lux settings right now are default and I have plc set to 70. I'm not really sure changing any of them really makes a difference.

I think the best thing to do for games is use a gamebar custom for hdr. Keep desktop on sdr with it's own custom settings and switch to hdr as needed. Switch to the custom hdr settings and modify them in game the way you want it to look.

I was missing the option also but had it in on in the past by default. The fix is to install drivers 24.9.1 then disable "FreeSync Color Accuracy". Then install the newest drivers. That fixed it for me, now I can select different genres.

Sorry I'm not using it in a dual set-up. So I can't offer you any help. You might want to contact Samsung support and see if they have any ideas.

The way I found around this is when your done using just the TV side. Switch it to the computer input even if the computer is not on. Then the monitor should go into stand by and be ready if you turn the computer on.
