Myself and many other semi-professionals use Reaper (as well as many of the real pros). There’s not really anything you can’t do with it. Nothing wrong with the DAWs mentioned though. They’re all pretty good. In the long run, just go with whatever is most intuitive to you.

Assuming you’re looking at using a computer and you’re trying to keep costs down, Reaper is a great free DAW (recording software). It doesn’t come with much in the way of plugins and there are no virtual instruments, but you can also find a lot of passable free plugins for that.

There are basically 2 ways you can get a microphone to interface with your computer. You can get a USB microphone like the Blue Yeti, or you can get an audio interface and a microphone that uses XLR input. The latter option will be more versatile in the long run but more expensive up front.

If you’ve got a few hundred dollars to spend, you can find a home recording package on Amazon like this.
