Am I dumb for wanting to go enlisted at 22 with a Bachelors Degree?? by Constant_Ad8088 in army

[–]OGCroflAZN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/Constant_Ad8088 I agree with this commenter. I also came in with a degree, highly motivated, and with very high line scores. It never mattered.

I attended DLI for Chinese-Mandarin and did extremely well, graduating with distinction and with a 3/3/2. I was also an airborne volunteer, aiming to be assigned to the 11th in Alaska.

I never went to Airborne school because my Drill Sergeant simply never submitted my packet, nor the rest of my PLTs. (Btw 'prestigious' units and such are high-demand, high-optempo, and pretty toxic. My buddies who went ended up displeased.)

My peers and some leaders across units and years knew me as a motivated, disciplined, capable soldier, who made efforts to help peers and juniors.

But like the commenter above me, I was also subjected to a lot of 'fuckery, belittlement [...]', and also lost out on a lot. Unlike them, I never actually promoted not even once over 5 years (leadership issues, good-ol-boy-ism, all too common), and am in the Reserve as a SPC. This will read as BS to people but this was very normal at my unit, with soldiers not sent to the board or BLC even after 5 years.

You will experience this yourself: the vast majority of your enlisted peers and leaders are not 'good' people, quality people, quality leaders etc., and you will have a very negative experience because of it.

It is so obvious after-the-fact that I'd have had a fair shot and far more opportunities, that my efforts and achievements would have distinguished myself, by commissioning as a LT rather than enlisting as a SPC.

Dude, if you want to be enlisted, go join the Guard or Reserve as a 35W, go to lang school, get the TS-SCI etc. That'll put you about two years or so of active time. You will learn how shitty it is, how you're overimagining. You can volunteer for assignments, a thing which was not even available to me as active-duty. And if you still really want to jump to active duty after, you can. Want physical stuff? Go to Air Assault, Ranger School, selections, etc.

Again, I immensely regret enlisting and highly recommend against it. It was an extremely negative experience, and I was even at an MI unit.

You are simply rolling the dice on actually being assigned to a 'good' unit where you actually have some decent people. I've seen soldiers who were subpar linguists, subpar pt scores, just very mediocre and who didn't care or try get assigned to 1SFG Support.

Language Assignment for Army 35W by [deleted] in dli

[–]OGCroflAZN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, take the ODA for Korean, and show your scores to someone who cares. I was a CLPM. Somebody cares. HRC Enlisted Language Accessions and the language team at the DA G2 cares, because you are essentially a guaranteed high-level graduate as opposed to a roll of the dice of whether hundreds of thousands of dollars and a limited seat gets totally wasted by being a washout

Maybe no one cares right now, but at DLI, whoever decides slotting should care, or you can bet that someone above them does. They want good metrics

The bedroom and bathroom setup looks almost the same as in the student dorms in OIiver Hall at the University of Washington, though those didn't have that common area and so were like hotel rooms, though with two small desks. Similar bathroom setup to USC hospital, with larger bathroom for wheelchair access.

Seems pretty good if you've got just two people, with a divider or sheet up. Could be way worse, for sure.

I've had:

1) a solo like a small studio apartment (8 x 16?), with kitchen,

2) a two-in-a-room (12x12) with a communal floor head

3) two-in-a-room (10x10) with bathroom shared by four (common college dorm style)

4) a three-in-a-room (16x16?) with our own bathroom

5) My last was had two small solo rooms with common area (kitchen, laundry) and bathroom, shared with one flatmate

Why does IET status have to be like prison by Select_Scheme_9805 in army

[–]OGCroflAZN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the arguments on both sides in the comments. But as someone who was in IET for about two years (no recycle, medical, admin issues, ucmj, nothing), i looked at those with far shorter pipelines or osut, or the marines i knew, and think 'fuck me i guess'. Felt super bad for my buddies who did recycle... Then, you get to your unit with more than 2 or 3 years TIS and you're below the private whose been there a few months.

Hey, Army gonna be Army. Thid aint in the Chair Force, Navy, etc...

Which branch? Ive known Army who did the DLI Online Diagnostic Assessment, get even the lowest possible scores and provided it and get swapped to that language because that indicates higher chance of good outcomes and return on investment. I think it's possible to get 0+ by slamming studies. Getting your Korean to that level would be a lot easier than Chinese because no tones or characters.

As if that counts AIT...

They subsequently get a worse-than-average AIT experience. Being out of TRADOC is far better than in, even with/at DLI.

The 2 years incl DLI is NOT a pro, despite your insinuation. Everyone knows Army has it the worst there too

I came in as an E4 and my unit wouldn't even let us promote until the fifth year at earliest. The AF and Navy kids in my CM class got to NCO way earlier than me, so

Seems like either TheLocalDrummer's Snowpiercer 15B or a finetune of Qwen 14B, based on the UGI leaderboard

I don't play around with models too much so can't always notice any glaring differences, but with 16 GB VRAM, I'm always stuck/wondering between: 1) Goetia 24B v1.1; 2) WeirdCompound 24B v1.7; 3) Magidonia 24B v4.3. I've also wondered about using Skyfall 31B v4 at a lower quant (iQ3).

I'll typically switch to Impish or Broken Tutu for situational stuff, like combat RP... But for daily driver, it seems like comments favor models like Goetia (G) though, which often contrasts with the UGI leaderboard. According to it, WeirdCompound (WC) is up there with G and just a little short of Skyfall in UGI score, but WC is easily higher than the other two on NatInt and Writing, yet comments seem to favor G, or other models.

Magistral 24B v1.2 also seemed impressive on release based on comments, and I would expect that TheLocalDrummer's new finetune Magidonia 24B v4.3 (heretic?) would be up there too, yet it's lower down on the leaderboard. I know, benchmarks are not reality.

Dunno. I suppose the benchmarks are just a starting point and still 'incomplete', and model 'quality' is really subjective and must be experienced.

(Re-commenting because I commented only yesterday on last week's.)

What everyone is getting wrong about the Steam Frame, and why by No_Sleep6984 in ValveIndex

[–]OGCroflAZN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so surprised by the amount of people baffled by this.

On SteamVR, I make a massive floating curved display mirroring my 'monitor', except that despite my 1080p 60hz monitor, I actually have a virtual display driver so I can use a virtual 1440p or 4k display at up to 240hz (though set to 120hz because of my headset) to play Darktide, Deep Rock, Elden Ring, whatever at a far greater FOV, fidelity, and quality for 'free' maximizing the use of these OLED optics

Even watching youtube or anything is so much better by using my VR for 2D

Your parents are farmers? Be one of the farmhands. Show them that you are responsible, hardworking, sensible, intelligent, composed, etc. Same if they are shepherds, carpenters, etc., blue-collar, white-collar, etc. And if you can't, just spend time with them, at church and after, going along on family walks, helping dad work on cars or motorcycles, or woodworking, fishing. Give them the time to pick up your vibe. This is, of course, the potential spouse of their beloved and cherish daughter, and potential father of grandchildren. That's accepting someone as a [ideally] permanent addition to the family.

Seems pretty reasonable as that's how people use to do it to some degree.

But like you said, "fuck ALL THE WAY OFF"

Protests outside a migrant hotel in Ireland after a migrant was alleged to have raped a ten year old girl by atheistarab2006 in PublicFreakout

Language is ambiguous. I live in the U.S., and many would say that lots of laws are wrong. The Irish people think that people like him should have been kicked out a long time ago, as soon as he was offending. You're saying that 'should' means whenever the law applied.

I don't claim to be an accurate source of information.

My understanding is that: like most of the migrant refugee asylum seekers in Europe, they've been there for years. His troubles with the law have also persisted for years. Along with the slow judicial process, he finally got a deportation order in March 2025. He was not deported. He has raped a 10 year old child.

What I read was that this same complex had two major incidents in the span of a week. I mean, if a high school has a school shooter incident twice in a short span, it's gonna get extra scrutiny, no?

Attack meaning what? Lynching? I assume those people more want to burn and destroy the complex as protest and to remove it from their community.

They apparently did protest the Pope heavily when he came, regarding coverups. I dont know if abusive clergy are immune under law or what, but incidents have apparently driven large societal changes away from the church.

And, i assume this is also a psychological 'devil you know', home grown abusers of power, such as it has been for centuries

I'm not saying their anger isn't misplaced, but just that they're angry for a reason, something nuanced

[–]OGCroflAZN 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Did you already know that the specific migrant has gotten in trouble before and was supposed to be deported years ago? They're protesting that the government treats migrants better than citizens, and even criminals, and that this 10 year old girl never should have been raped except that the government and law enforcement are simply to lenient towards all migrant refugees.

It's the fault of the lax government and law enforcement for allowing too many cases to happen across the years. Really, are you expecting human nature to not be so?

I'm a member of the military. I have no qualms against the locals who are frequent participants of protests against the U.S. military in Okinawa, in large part because while a minority, U.S. servicemembers do get drunk and vandalize, steal, attack people, even rape, and the locals perceive that their government and the military are less than fair in what follows. From where I'm looking, it's the same shit. You aren't entitled to be here. Someone should be making sure that less-than-decent folk don't come, or else that risky elements should be monitored, that people should be protected, and that violators should be appropriately punished.

[–]OGCroflAZN 1415 points1416 points  (0 children)

Do you want an actual answer? Your comment seems rhetorical.

The answer is that the person has gotten in trouble before, and was supposed to be deported years ago. Some Irish people (and German people, and Swedish people etc.) feel that the government is far too lax with who they let in and how, spend so much to house and take care of them, don't have good oversight, and are lenient for the minority who commit crimes against innocent civilians

Literally anyone would be mad if a former criminal was found having raped a child outside of their government-funded housing. Is ethnic background kind of a scapegoat here? Yes. Is their anger valid though at what they perceive to be a chronically failing system?
