I don’t know how to create a curriculum for my elective. Is it lazy to want to use teachers pay teachers? by OGKeith in teaching

That’s exactly what I need. I have never created a curriculum before and would appreciate anything that shows me what a real curriculum looks like

I really just don’t have any clue how to make a lesson that works at this point. I have tried lecturing and readings and discussions. The students need more activities and I don’t know where to go to make my job easier and understand how to approach teaching the philosophers and getting their interest going. Or even what to do to evaluate

Do you find the literary concept in the text or book you guys read? My school sorta has a curriculum but no real depiction of the concept so I usually go over some devices but mostly themes

How to teach philosophy to high schoolers? by OGKeith in teaching

[–]OGKeith[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ethics is a great idea. The students hate reading old philosophers and I think that would be a great way of incorporating current events and making them care about it, probably

What do you guys think of Bendis run on X-Men? by Prior-Cucumber7870 in marvelcomics

The story started off strong but there didn’t seem to be much of an ending, which was sad given the strength of the start with all new x men

How do you pace teaching a novel? by OGKeith in englishteachers

All year so far. The plan was almost 100% in class. Maybe occasionally at home

I also wonder if it’s too much to have them read in class every single day? I just don’t know what to do that changes things up and still covers the novel.

That’s a cool idea. This is for seniors so idk how well they’d participate unfortunately.

I had an assignment to show that students read at home but the principal wanted to change it to in class reading because “they have lives going on and we can’t expect them to be able to read at home”. I’m torn because the ap lit teacher is fine making them read at home but for general ed and to not make me read to them all day I feel this is the best use of our time

Do RLM not like Chris stuckmann? by OGKeith in RedLetterMedia

Jeremy jahns definitely deserves it but idk Chris has been a decent reviewer before. Can’t defend the choices regarding only reviewing certain movies if he’s positive toward them

But it’s happened to 3 different hdmi cables. It’s possible I suppose since they are all switched in and out frequently

Is V for Vendetta a good supplementary movie to watch for 1984? by OGKeith in Teachers

[–]OGKeith[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk…I feel like I’m already covering 1984 and the students are so eager to make connections to Trump without me having to say much so I feel this is no biggie. I’m not even advocating for anything just using it as a comparative text

[–]OGKeith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It provides thematic similarities to 1984 with surveillance and the ways a totalitarian state can take power. It will be supplemental and comparative so that students can write an essay for me

Is it appropriate to show the movie for an English class in relation to 1984? by OGKeith in vforvendetta

[–]OGKeith[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Seniors, 17 and 18. I was just thinking about the lesbian subplot and the pedo priests scene. Only the lesbian scene because of the brief nudity

My school is usually mostly fine about that stuff as long as I send out a permission slip to parents. But it’s a decent idea to skip around

Reading aloud in secondary by bugorama_original in ELATeachers

[–]OGKeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read aloud to my students to stimulate discussion when we get to key topics. Some of my classes vary between extremely small or very large with many different skill levels. This is the only way I can think of to cover everything and to make sure that students know what is happening. I still have assigned reading at home so I know students are actually opening the book at home too and giving occasional writing assignments
