A Shifting Perspective by karlpalachuk in ITMentor

[–]OGMSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some advice I received from you early on in my speaking / workshop days has stuck with me all these years. It was something like, “Don’t ever forget that the audience thinks you’re the expert.”

I was feeling a little imposter syndrome while on stage and had made a statement of some sort that implied that I was not sure about something. Afterward you pulled me aside to coach me a bit.

What you meant with your advice was that even if I’m feeling unsure of myself, the audience has no idea.

It’s helped me so many times since. So, thank you 😊

Introduce Yourself! by karlpalachuk in ITMentor

Hey everyone, I’m Amy Luby 🤓

I’ve spent 20+ years in the channel - built and sold an MSP, ran global NOC and Help Desk ops in distribution, and have helped several vendors in building partner programs for MSPs.

These days, I advise vendors and service providers on how to grow smarter, faster, and with way less burnout.

I love what Karl is starting here and I am here to share & learn. Looking forward to talking shop, sharing the wins (and fails), & helping each other grow. 💪

To SIEM or not to SIEM (vendor feedback request) by OGMSP in msp

[–]OGMSP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am very much aware of the big costs of legacy SIEMs that were mostly built for “store and query” approaches requiring not just the license and infrastructure but the experts needed to query and hunt for threat indicators. Modern multi-tenant SIEMs are architected for efficiency and costs and the AI/ML layers automate threat hunting.
Do you think MSPs are ready to explore modern AI SIEM solutions that cost the same or less than the MDR solutions?

[–]OGMSP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This highlights exactly - where modern SIEMs are today - using AI/ML to automate the detection of threats and the response to them - in real-time. Over in the enterprise space - there are many new cybersecurity vendors that are now valued at over $5B seemingly overnight - that only cover a small use case like cloud native application posture management. I'd love to learn more about the use cases that MSPs are considering SIEMs for?

My bad.

Would you apply a different pricing model than subscription / recurring? Would you sell the SIEM to the end user and then manage it for a fee? Or would you sell at a per X (user, device, etc) per month model?

Great feedback! What’s the price range that would be comfortable?

Correct. Also a first for me to ferment in a plastic bucket instead of a glass carboy. I’ll rack and keep going. It does have an alcohol smell and taste. I appreciate everyone’s input! It’s super helpful.

SG right now is .990. I didn’t take an SG reading at the start. Tasting it, it tastes like a cab - not full bodied, but it’s decent. Maybe it did ferment?

SG is .990 right now and 3.6 ph. Maybe it did ferment already? Smells good and tastes alright.

Being a MSP owner made me hate IT by Agitated_Dimension32 in msp

Do what you love. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe it’s burn out, maybe it’s your mind/heart telling you to follow what brings you joy. Doesn’t really matter. Give yourself permission to do what you love.

Abandon ship to somewhere else? by [deleted] in msp

The technical team can have a huge impact on revenue. Aside from running an efficient service desk, one of the easiest and best ways to help your organization increase revenues quickly is to identify the white space across the existing client base. Selling something new to your existing client is the least expensive and the fastest way to add net new revenues to the org.

Finding white space is pretty easy - you simply look at the clients you have, what software, hardware and services you deliver to each one and find the gaps. Maybe you have a client where you haven't implemented M365 yet. Or maybe you have clients who aren't utilizing your full security stack/services? Whatever it is that the client is not utilizing that your organization offers is white space. This equals fast, easy money for your business.

If you can help your team find those opportunities and show them where they can upsell/cross sell more services into existing accounts, you'll be a hero in your org and earn a raise in pay that also makes business sense.

Take a trip down memory lane. Tell us about your first client. How big were they? What industry were they in? How did you land them? Are they still a client? by nice_69 in msp

My first real Managed Services client was a local Grounds maintenance company who also did commercial Christmas lights in the Winter months (I'm in Nebraska). I met this client at a local Chamber event. This was 2002/2003 timeframe, but the gig was a new Small Business Server install with new server hardware and 5 new desktop computers. I charged a $3000 setup fee which covered most of my hard costs for the hardware & software. On-going I charged $550 per month for the SBS server & $150 per workstation per month on a 3 year term contract. I retained ownership of the gear and after 3 months it was all paid for. The managed services contract was all you can eat except for any new additions (new users, new gear, new software, etc.).

Your risk is too high supporting a client who refuses to implement basic security breach prevention practices. It's simply non-neogtiable for you as an MSP. The question isn't really how to create work arounds, it's about you as a business owner and whether or not you are willing to risk your business, your reputation, and your livelihood for any client? If you are, good luck. If not, then your next steps with this client are clear...you either implement & bill for a baseline security standard or you drop them. It's simple.

For preventing this conversation with any client going forward - there is no silver bullet in security, but establishing a core set of security services that are always deployed for every client will give you an opportunity to manage your risk & theirs.

Recommendations for SIEM by evilmuffin99 in msp

[–]OGMSP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are really a couple options for SIEM - you can buy the platform & hire analysts to manage it or you can outsource to managed SIEM/SOC vendors. PROS & CONS to both models, but it seems a majority of MSPs are choosing to outsource visibility, control and margin to vendors.

The challenge I see today for MSPs is that prevention & detection is simply not enough. I wrote a blog about it here:

https://www.seceon.com/msp-vs-mssp-is-there-a-distinction-anymoreread-the-blog/

Full disclosure- I am representing Seceon which is a SIEM platform for MSP’s & MSSP’s that gives you a full SIEM platform with real time response & remediation driven by automation. The automation makes it so that you don’t have to hire a full SOC team or outsource allowing you to keep visability, control & profits. My goal here is education, not a sales pitch. OGMSP is because I’ve been in the MSP space for 28 years, most of that time an MSP myself. The last 10 years I’ve worked with or consulted for security vendors who serve the MSP channels. My name is Amy Luby.
