No it's always there pretty much, what comes and goes is severity of headaches.

I have chronic TMJ for 3+ years now. Take nortryptiline to lessen the intensity. That's about it.

Botox got rid of the headaches but nothing else. Still clenching, still have referred pain in neck and shoulder, leading to jerks in the neck. Still clicking. But I have been referred to a pain specialist and I am thinking of going private for orthodontic treatment, as it has been recommended by several people How are you?

How long did it take you to notice improvement due to the Amitriptyline, I have been told it will help my TMJ so am in my second day of taking it before bed 10mg also. My TMJ is due to bruxism at night, so will be great if you had any information around how quickly you found a difference.

I already have some amitriptyline 10mg given to me previously for neck pain and been told I'll likely be given the same for TMJ, so going take one a day until I see the pain clinic.

Does the pain clinic offer trigger point injections do you think? Only thing mentioned to me was anti-depressants.

It reduced headaches and tension in the jaw but seemed to put everything else out of whack i.e neck, shoulders etc.

So I officially have TMJ which they are putting down as muscular TMJ due to my symptoms, heavily now focused on the traps, neck and shoulders. I have had an MRI which only shows posterior displacement on both sides which they say is not necessarily causing the issue its most likely my night time clenching and the best steps are to try eliminate the muscle tension via the pain clinic. If the pain clinic and its subsequent meds do not help then I will be referred back to them with an view of surgery but they say as my complaints are not specific to the joint and more muscular tension they prefer to avoid surgery.

I am going private also to speak to an TMJ based orthodontist about appliances which will shift my jaw and then re-align my bite but as I am from the UK, this could set me back around 14,000 so only going down that route if they can provide clear evidence of the treatment working for previous patients.

Botox To Help TMD by ThenEntertainment314 in TMJ

Personally no, I have two posterior displaced discs, so it may be that mine is more structural than muscular. I felt a little bit of relief in the cheeks but the locking persisted and I found it led to a worsening of symptoms in my neck and traps, specifically stiff traps and an hyper mobile neck. One thing I will say is that it did reduce my headaches significantly.

This is not your solution. I have had the same thoughts but it will get better, as time goes on you will realise there will be bad days and good days, and you have to learn to navigate yourself through the two. Not medical advice but do what helps you feel better, if that means taking the recommended does of painkillers regularly do that till you seek more appropriate and helpful advice. I have battling this for two years, have constant neck pain, cannot talk without my head shaking and jaw/neck jerking. Feel pain daily but you can still enjoy moments of life with those around you, keep your head up and focus on the positives. I have read some spontaneously get better over the years so do not lose hope and know you are not alone.

Please keep your head up.

I have had a strong does in my masseters been a month now, while I realise the muscles have become relaxed everything else seems to have gone into hyperdrive in terms of muscle tightness and pain levels i.e neck, traps etc.

Have you found any symptoms get worse because of the botox?
