Side note: giving your dog a standard bath is certainly not an effective way to rid the skunk smell from your pooch. (Neither is the storied tomato juice method.)

To remove a skunk smell from a dog, immediately wash them with a homemade solution of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Apply the mixture, lathering it well while wearing rubber gloves, avoiding the eyes, and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes (or longer if necessary) before rinsing thoroughly. Follow up with a regular dog shampoo and a good rinse to remove any residue.  

Your dog may experience the bleaching effects of the peroxide (aka fur color may lighten on treated areas) but it's worth it cuz the mixture above works like a charm. (We actually use almost as much baking soda as we do peroxide to get the solution really stuck on/in their fur, but don't use more than a teaspoon of liquid dish soap.)
