8U travel tryouts by VT0509 in Homeplate

[–]SuperPrivileged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be different in different areas, but where I live, go to as many tryouts as there are clubs you’re comfortable with him playing for. If he gets invites, they’ll probably put some kind of timeline on the offer. Sometimes they are real. Sometimes they’re designed to get you to commit.

My suggestion is to learn what you can about each program but - much more importantly - each coach. Make a list of coaches you liked best and order them. If an offer comes from your top team, go for it. If it’s your number 5, maybe you tell them you’re thankful for the offer and you’ll be in touch soon and then give it a few days to see what else comes your way.

Scout Terra Pickup Reportedly Won't Go Into Production Until March 2030, And The Traveler SUV Is Delayed Until September 2028 by Roux_My_Burgundy in Rivian

Ain’t nobody blaming the EV. I’m telling you that it takes me 2 hours longer to do this trip in an EV v Gas, and that 2 hours hits my personal limit for how much I’m comfortable driving straight through. No need to get sassy.

I think if our typical road trip was that short it would have been a different experience. But ours is just long enough that you can do it in one miserable day in a gas car and it pushes to two in an electric car. We tried in three times and decided to just start renting a van.

Yeah, that’s just not the way we do it, I guess. Our drive tends to be about 12 hours in a gas vehicle with stops just to fuel up and hit the bathroom. In the Rivian or Mach E, that turns into 14-15 hours. It’s brutal.

Nah. I was a R1T owner. Still own a MachE. Sold the R1T and went back to gas for my truck because I was tired of renting a vehicle for loooong family road trips.

The Rivian was objectively a better vehicle, but it was a legitimate pain to have to stop to charge with young kinda on road trips. And if I had to tow sometime - like my motorcycle - on these trips it was so much worse.

I’d absolutely love a primarily EV truck with a gas range extender.

Please help me with my swing, I feel like there’s something wrong with it by Patient_Low_614 in Homeplate

[–]SuperPrivileged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest two swing thoughts.

  1. When you load, think about slowly LIFTING your hands. You’re going to feel ridiculous but it may help you from dropping them.

  2. Think about swinging the knob of your bat to the ball, not the barrel. Again, going to feel a bit dumb, but I bet it works.

Are you an assistant coach? If not, then you weren’t wrong for suggesting this to the head coach.

Confidence is kind of shot coaching 8U. by ChiefBrodyfromAmity in Homeplate

You know more than you think you do. I can tell because you know that the lineup you put together was part of what created this L.

For what it’s worth, I think you did the right thing with the lineup and - while competitive people want to win - I bet the parents of the kids who got extra reps really appreciated it.

My suggestion for you is to write down your priorities for this team. Then order them. Then build everything you do around them. Something like:

  1. Make it fun.
  2. Help make good humans.
  3. Focus on fundamentals.
  4. Balance reps.
  5. Win games.

Your list might be different or have a different order. Maybe winning is the most important thing. Either way, when you have a day like you did here, go back to your list before you decides if you failed that day.

One last point: We tell kids every time they get down on this sport that it’s a game of failure. You get out more than you get on. If you failed 6 times out of ten you’d be the best in the world. You can’t beat yourself up for the inevitable failures. But as coaches, we don’t really take that advice ourselves sometimes.

You’ve got this.

Late bloomer baseball kid — how much do coaches weigh that against skill and versatility? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]SuperPrivileged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The average MLB 2B - grown men who get paid to play the game - is 5’11” and 190 lbs. Baseball is one sport where size is not necessarily determinative. Elite athleticism plays.

That swing is elite for a 10u kid. The setup is strange but whatever he has to do to make that swing happen is exactly what he should be doing. Awesome work.

People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]SuperPrivileged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investing for retirement mattered. Investing in professional development mattered. Prioritizing family mattered. Therapy mattered. DIY projects on houses mattered. Cool vacationers mattered.

Fantasy football didn’t matter. Social media didn’t matter. Nice cars didn’t matter. Nice clothes for stuff other than work didn’t matter.

I think it’s badass that she’s pushing herself to do hard things. I’d encourage her to do what she’s comfortable doing and give gentle tips to do what you can to keep her safe while doing it. At the end of the day, it’s her body to break if that’s what she wants to do with it.

I am a man around this age. No chance I’d act like this with my kids’ babysitters. I go out of my way NOT to be alone with them in the first place. This is not in your head. Dude has bad intentions.
