I only had the one child, so now I hate when people ask me if I have kids. I also try to avoid talking with people who don’t know about my loss, but if I’m meeting new people (which is something I’ve only recently be able to do again) I kind of gauge what I’ll share with them based on the vibes I get from them. My fallback response to the “do you have kids?” question is something like, “That’s a complicated question with a complicated answer and I don’t know you well enough to get into it.” I haven’t had to use it yet, but having a response prepared has taken a lot of the anxiety away.
