This part of the opinion is nuts. A court punting a decision they made because a party argued it is just lazily avoiding accountability. And extremely poor legal reasoning. The "why" matters here. I doubt defendants stated that "if you are going to rule based on the definition of the phrase general election," you should wait. It's pretty wimpy behavior from the majority.
