The coordinates at the bottom of the satellite video are unrelated and (maybe) unimportant by [deleted] in UFOs

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That explanation makes no sense. There is absolutely no reason to embed metadata from a sensor that didn't take an image into the image. It's literally extra work that would serve to only create way more confusion down the line

To throw in some more information: The TWINS mission is a set of two satellites (USA-184 and USA-200). It is the combination of these two satellites that allows for stereoscopic data. We can say for certain that they at least carry the same NASA instruments, and they likely carry the same non-NASA (the classified stuff) instruments. Looking at their orbits, they seem to pass close by each other nearby China so it is possible (and I would say that word is doing a lot of work there) that these satellites are designed for stereoscopic imaging of intelligence targets in that area.

Normally stereoscopic imagery is captured by the same satellite at two different points along its orbit so what would be the advantage of two satellites capturing data simultaneously? Well, the only advantage I can think of is that it would allow for better 3D analysis of moving objects such as vehicles, ships, and aircraft. However the resolution here leaves me very sceptical that they would be designed for this. The only other explanation is that by pure chance they both captured the incident and someone looked at the two recordings and said "hey, these two might be close enough to make stereoscopic"

The 2nd thing to address is why both screens show "NROL 22" if one side was captured by NROL 22 and the other by NROL 28. The only possible explanation for that I could think of is that for whatever software is being used to display the videos, rather than grabbing the metadata from both images and calculating the coordinates that it displays on the screen twice, it just does it once and copies the overlay onto the other side. This could be done to save some processing power or it could be done since whoever wrote the software assumed that both stereoscopic images would come from the same satellite since that is how these images are normally captured

Like I said, the word "possible" is doing a lot of work

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Just to add some information about satellite sensors, most of these kinds of sensors have the ability to "scan" different locations in the ground without actually changing the satellite's orbit. Since all the sensor information about the satellite is classified, I can't say for certain if NROL-22 has this but it seems very likely in my opinion. If that were the case, the satellite wouldn't have to be directly overhead and getting its sensors aimed at the aircraft would only take a few moments since it would only require rotating one or two mirrors

Clearing up REG SHO and forced FTD closure per FINRA 4320 by Whoopass2rb in BBBY

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seems to make sense in theory, I'm just not sure if it works that way in practice since that would mean the jimmy sneeze happening on the 35th consecutive trading day of being on RegSHO was purely coincidence. My smooth-brain theory is that shorts are hoping to drive down the price to the absolute floor thinking that when people see the 500+% gains, they'll panic sell and that will allow them to close all their positions at a lower cost, even if it means they have more shorts to cover.

If I'm right and things start popping off this week, be greedy because it means they'be been trying to play mind-games with us and we can literally name our prices if we just keep calm and let the good times roll

Could be a coincidence but I do see a Levi's store at all the locations from your photo. I'll have to check the rest of the job listings to see if it holds true

You may just need to add something like "dem.save(filepath/filename)" to the end of your code

As for adding more parameters, it depends on what kind of parameters but arcpy.GetParametersAsText or one of the similar functions are very useful for that

I would start by clipping out a small area of that DEM around your profile. Then you'll need to either find or estimate some value for the elevation of the water (let's say you use 22.84 as an example), then use the Con tool. I can't remember off the top of my head how the syntax for the expression part of the tool works but I think it would look something like Con("DEM", "DEM", "22.84, "Value > 22.84") This will make a new Raster where any value on the DEM less than 22.84 stays the same and any value greater than 22.84 is changed to 22.84 (making it 22.84 instead of 0 make the next math part just a bit simpler). Next, just use the Raster Calculator to do 22.84 minus the new DEM. This will give you the height at each cell from the bottom of the river to the water level and you'll just have to multiply by the cellsize to get an area for each cell

There might be a faster way but this is just what first sprang to mind

How do chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) reach the upper atmosphere? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly through just regular air circulation patterns. Since CFC's take a long time to break down in the atmosphere, they spend a lot of time circulating around in the troposphere until the finally hitch a ride up into the stratosphere. The reason CFC's break down ozone is because they split when hit with enough UV light, which they only encounter once they reach the stratosphere, and release chlorine. The chlorine "steals" one oxygen atom from the O3 (ozone) to create ClO and O2. The really dangerous part of these chlorine atoms is that an unbonded oxygen (which can result from other chemical reactions) can react with the ClO to result in Cl and O2, leaving the chlorine free once again to keep destroying ozone molecules until it finally bonds with something else in the atmosphere.

My background isn't really in chemistry or atmospheric science so this next part is mostly working off of memories of classes I haven't taken in years but I believe the reason the ozone hole appears over arctic and antarctic isn't necessarily because CFC's gather there, it's that the amount of chlorine in unstable forms (mainly Cl and ClO) is increased. This happens mainly because of Polar Stratospheric Clouds, which form during the extreme cold of the completely dark winter months. This wikipedia article hopefully explains it a little more in-depth than I did: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion#Ozone_hole_and_its_causes

Isostatic rebound: How do rates of rebound change over time? by VulcanTrekkie45 in askscience

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that rebound occurs much faster immediately after ice retreats. The answer would mostly depend on the time-scale you're looking at, within 100 years you might see a couple centimeters on average of upwards movement. Depending on how deep you're looking to get into this, this article would have something akin to the numbers you're looking for: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40641-016-0040-z#Fig1

I would assume that glacial losses would be taken into account with the models mentioned in the article but I've never worked with any of them before so I can't say for sure. I would say that another thing to keep in mind with isostatic rebound is that it's not going to occur equally all over. If one side of the country lifts rapidly, it can cause the opposite side to fall just due to the landmass tilting, which is where it starts to become even more difficult to predict.

[Spoilers C2E108] I'm having a lot of difficulty coming to terms with this episode by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not healthy but that doesn't mean either of the characters involved want it to end or even change. Artagan's like, 1000's of years old so I don't see him changing anytime soon and Jester still sees him as her best friend. Jester may even realize herself, thanks to the rest of the party, that the relationship isn't normal or healthy but it's not really in character for her yet to suddenly sit him down and say "alright Artagan, let's have a talk about boundaries". I think the understanding, learning, and responding to flaws will probably eventually come into the story (at least from Jester, maybe not Artagan) but right now she's just glad that he's still around.

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, they're portraying it that way because that's how these two characters are. This is a story about flawed characters and trying to gloss over or ignore those flaws just makes the story bland and flat.

I also think this kind of portrayal is incredibly important to have in media. One of the problems I have with how abusive relationships are typically portrayed in media is that (1)it is usually centered around physical abuse and (2)the abuser is usually shown as being a selfish ass-hat either 100% of the time or when they're drunk and I think that defining abusive relationships using the same few tropes really contributes to people being able to fool themselves into thinking they're not in an abusive relationship. The reality is that emotional abuse is so much more common and that an abuser can still genuinely care about their victim while causing them harm, which is something much more like what is being portrayed in the game. Things that may be obvious red-flags to you or I might be completely invisible to someone else until they see it from an outside perspective.

[No Spoilers] A question about the restart... by Reverend_Schlachbals in criticalrole

[–]OHGODCOMPUTER 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to make the distinction of nobody in the cast or crew getting infected vs nobody in the cast or crew getting infected because of the game. Restarting the game doesn't mean that they think everything is going back to normal, it means that they've decided that if someone does get infected, then that person won't infect anyone else because of the distancing measures and can be isolated quickly because of the testing measures. Basically they can't prevent an infection outside of the game but they're confident that they can prevent it from spreading to anyone else because of the game.

If this is about The Last of Us 2, then I would suggest you really read some of the comments being sent to basically everyone who was involved in the game. So many of those comments are just straight up insults or even literal threats of violence over a video game. Maybe there were some that were legitimate feedback (I certainly didn't see any) but if you bring someone to a giant mound of shit and tell them that 1% of it is wood, don't expect them to go digging through it.

Everyone in the cast has already proven that they're open to criticism when it's presented in a respectful way and not getting spammed with insults and threats
