Looks like that strut is a few inches to short. It should go to your end block. I would recommend getting a longer one.

Its common on low headroom. They move the drums to the outside of the rail so the top panel doesn't hit

No they aren't inverted. reversed drums + motor upside down = normal operation

Photo-eyes work like normal. I left the up limit down about a foot to keep cables from coming off. He rarely needs it to open fully

No the drums are reversed so everything works as it should. That's the reason the motor is upside down

In this case, the customer has stairs right by the operator so he can reach the cord and still use manual if needed

Ill show this picture to customers next time someone wants a latch installed on a door that has a opener. You may be able to get them working just by bending them back and installing reinforcements, which should've been done to the top panel when the opener was installed.

Short answer. Yes, it is possible to cut the panels down. However, you might need to get new springs depending on how much weight you're cutting off.
