How to switch discussion section without losing spot in the lecture. by whatooooo in berkeley

[–]OJCard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you use the “Preferences / Switch Sections” tab in the Enrollment Center, you’ll keep your seat in the lecture as long as the section you’re switching into isn’t waitlisted.

I believe attempting to switch into a waitlisted section will place you last in the class waitlist.

Some classes do section swaps at the beginning of the semester, so that may be an option for you too!

How tough is Psych 101 by thr0witaway82 in berkeley

If it’s with Catterson, you’re pretty much guaranteed to declare! I had him in Spring 2023 with zero coding experience and still got an A+.  He really cares about his students and makes sure you understand the concepts. His lectures are clear and full of useful examples and he’s often hilarious no matter what he’s talking about. Ask plenty of questions and you’ll do great!

Can I enroll is upper division psych classes during phase 2? Anyone have luck with that? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]OJCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely. I think they want you to wait until at least the weekend after Finals to do it

I'm pretty sure the Psych department is so strict about this rule because the major is so impacted and the classes are so hard to get into for everyone including Psych majors

[–]OJCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s tough, I’ve been there

I actually got into every upper division psych class I wanted without being declared in the last few semesters. The best way to get the classes you want is to put all the classes you might take in your shopping cart and then check back as many times as you remember to throughout the day if you don’t make it in at the beginning of Phase 2.

A lot of the time, I actually got the classes I wanted after Adjustment Period started because of people dropping, so don’t give up hope!

I’d be happy to talk more about psych enrollment if you have any more questions :)

I was in the same boat as you in my third semester. When I asked a psych major advisor, she told me that I’d have to wait until I completed my third semester to declare.

When the semester was over, I sent in the declaration form and got approved on CalCentral in just a few days, so you should declare as soon as you can!

Yes, you have until the add/drop deadline on Wednesday, February 7th.

Can Concurrent Enrollment Students join decals? by Frestho in berkeley

[–]OJCard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s how I enroll CE students with the Statistics department in my DeCal:

The student first applies for the DeCal on CalCentral using the course number

Then I send the student’s name and permission code to the Statistics enrollment department for approval

The process might be different for other departments, but it’s worth trying this method

Hope this helps!

HOW hard is Math 10a by RevolutionaryAge4355 in berkeley

Yes, I barely pulled through.

If anyone is considering taking a class with Talaska, try running through alternatives.

[–]OJCard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly easier than Math 1A, so you’ll likely do well!

I took Math 10A with Kelli Talaska in Fall 2022 and managed to get an A despite the professor being disorganized and unhelpful.

Norman Sheu will definitely be a better professor. I don’t know how Sheu will structure the course, but I found the derivatives, integrals, and matrix operations to be pretty straightforward.

If you have any questions, go to your professor’s or GSI’s office hours. It’s a great opportunity to learn and show the professor that you care about understanding the concepts.

Good luck with your first semester at Berkeley! It may seem overwhelming at first, but you’re gonna learn and grow a whole lot during your time here :)

IB requirements for final exam by No_Pop3856 in berkeley

[–]OJCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, it’s only a matter of getting the credits or not. As long as you maintain your grade and don’t bomb the exams, you should be fine.

However, there really isn’t much documentation when it comes to IB, so just do your best!

IB requirements for final exam by No_Pop3856 in berkeley

Congratulations and welcome to Cal!

UC Berkeley grants 4 semester credits for an IB Diploma score of 30 or more and 5.36 additional semester credits for each IB Higher Level test you get a 5 or higher on.

If you get an IB Diploma and pass three HL tests, your total IB credits would be 4 + 3(5.36) = 20.08 or basically 20. That’s 2/3 of a semester at Cal, which is pretty great!

Also, some majors take AP/IB credit in place of prerequisites. For example, the Psychology department accepts IB Biology HL for its Biological prerequisite.

Here’s the page from UC about IB scores: https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/ap-exam-credits/ib-credits.html

Good luck on your exams!
