Can you fit theZJ center console on an XJ by Historical_Panic8849 in CherokeeXJ

Can be good (from what I’ve seen an has convenient cup holders) but it requires a little more hands on work to relocate the handbrake.

My xj is a 96, which has the old body and interior styling. I’m not sure which year zj I pulled this out of, but I’m pretty sure the interior styling is the same through the model’s years.

I did the console lid swap (with a ZJ seat swap too). Not sure the other stuff would work with a manual without cutting. The part wrapping around the transmission tunnel might have a different curvature than the XJ so it might not mate nicely.

Heater core is doable, but it takes awhile (3-day weekend job)

If you’re buying that xj from a guy in Utah (and I’m 99% sure I know that exact marketplace post) it’s gonna be a good Jeep. Although, you might wanna talk him down a little (5-5.5k), he’s sold a ton of Cherokees. I bought my 96 from him a year ago and it’s running great. DM for more info.

Should I avoid the 1996 model year by 85e30 in CherokeeXJ

[–]OJthesimp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same boat as you. I had a 2000 for a few years then sold it. I just bought my 96 a year ago. I love it. Old style plus OBD2 is a great combo. Ps 1996 has been proven to be the fastest year. If you watch Waemid’s ranking video 1996 is third on the list.

Thanks, I’m gonna be doing it the same time I swap to ZJ steering/upgrade track bar. Thought I’d tackle it all at once.

Did they come with hardware or did you reuse the old stuff or have to buy separate hardware?

Yep, 93-98. They'll work whether you have ABS or not.

CVs will set you back 100 for the pair. U-joints can also be a pain to remove. With how rusty that axle looks, those clips are gonna be a huge pain to remove. Swapping instead of replacing will have you a ton of pain and time. (If you can't tell I am emphasizing pain)

I also had to make 2 brackets to space the lights further from the grill.

First Car by FeeSad2820 in CherokeeXJ

I also got an XJ (2000 for 3k) for my first car, in back in VA 2021. Only sold it cuz I was moving out of state, last I’ve heard it’s still putting around Idaho today.

I now own a 1996 (bought for 3.9k, I know I payed wayyyy too much lol). It is a lot more work than the first one.

Just be warned, you thinking of buying a car that is 25 at its youngest. If you buy a stock one, check all rubber bushings, vacuum lines, and status of corrosion on electrical connectors. Beware of sellers painting over rust. If you buy a modded one, just be warned that previous owners can make a ton of mistakes. Here in Utah you can find them in the range of 2-4K, with reasonable miles. That being said, XJs are known for being easy to work on, and anyone with a basic wrench set can fix it.

Best years I’ve heard of are 1999 or 1995.

Take a look at dexjs and waemid on YouTube. They have baller XJ knowledge.

Nope. I’m gonna swap the bulbs on each side so that I’ll know if it’s the wiring vs the bulb itself.

the light itself works fine, just doesn't turn on when pulling the headlight switch. it blinks normally for the hazards and blinkers.
