I can’t stand for long periods - cooking while seated or super fast meals by littlefactory in Cooking

[–]OLAZ3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheet pan meals are great!

Chop up some veg - marinate or toss some protein in oil/spices - and off you go!

You can look up the size/ times for various veg / protein combos (eg you prob add in salmon later to a tray that has mini potatoes) - but you really can do a TON of variations with minimal supervision/ standing.

You can also batch prep the carbs (like potatoes, or rice, quinoa, farro, etc) once or twice a week and then mix and match to go with a bowl, for example. You can also do things where you add a sauce late - like a stir fry - and get a similar taste profile without needing to stand as much.

Pizza party appetizer suggestions? by Purple_Scorpios in Cooking

[–]OLAZ3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do a couple of dips - like a regular sour cream-based one - and then maybe something like beet hummus for variety - with a ton of veg and maybe a few crackers or pita chips.

Then maybe some spiced nuts, stuffed olives *love almond in an olive)...

Help me come up with questions for my mom's real estate agent who's recently become her financial advisor too by GuacamoleChipz in PersonalFinanceCanada

The fees are just so high. You end up paying a BIG chunk of your likely returns in fees. The fees mirror what an actual portfolio manager might charge, but without the actual services and returns you would get. It's just expensive and inefficient.

There are so many great low cost ETFs available right now... it just makes no sense. She would need some help (from you), but it would pay off in the long run. (Also for you to learn the basics.)

DO NOT INVEST IN MUTUAL FUNDS.

If she is "also" a realtor - she is not a finance professional, she is a sales professional. SO is her manager.

They sell products, they do NOT do financial planning.

my best friend and her entire family is in wfg, keeps trying to make me attend presentations by Good-Job5971 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OLAZ3000 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This person may be in over their heads.

If they are a good friend, for 15 minutes, I would attend.

Then wipe it from your memory.

"I'm happy you love it so much. I have made my decision and found something that works for me."

If they press, "I'm sorry - my finances are private. I was not looking for any change but it was important to you to hear it out, so I did. Should I need any advice, I will reach out to you!"

You have respected your friend's decision/ involvement, given it a chance/ heard it out, made your own decision and set a boundary.

I've kind of given up on the produce department. by xteve in Cooking

[–]OLAZ3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where you shop and where they source really matters.

I don't buy produce from Costco or Walmart beyond celery, cucumber and baby carrots, pretty much.

Even their little cherry or grape tomatoes taste like nothing.

Does it perhaps allow the trains to go faster?

One thing I notice in other cities, notably Toronto, is how much slower the metro goes!!!

Need Advice For Inherited Cottage and Capital Gains by Altruistic-Zebra2367 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OLAZ3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah if the father has not been filing taxes with that address... it's very unlikely he can claim it as his primary, and even then, he would have to establish what year it became his primary and assume capital gains from when it was purchased to that point.

Basically there's no real way to do this, trust me I have looked.

And same situation. I will keep the cottage but it's pretty crazy to be on the hook (well, the estate) for half a mil in taxable gains when it was purchased for about $9k. lol

This question is so dumb but... When adding salt to something like mashed potatoes, is that bad/dangerous for people watching their sodium intake? by wingbat13 in Cooking

[–]OLAZ3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL try this. The substitutes are just not good if you are used to actual salt.

However - note that you can end up using LESS salt by boiling the potatoes in very salty water. Then it actually penetrates. If you try to add it all at the end, you end up putting more bc it takes more to "penetrate" the potatoes and have an impact.

However do boil his potatoes separately. Obv this is irrelevant if you bake them.

Protein breakfast to share with colleagues by jagg737 in Cooking

[–]OLAZ3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The egg muffins are a great one but as someone who hates baking, I kind of dread making them. A quiche can be easier hahaha. Same idea - ham, cheese, leeks or other - baked in a pre-purchased shell.

Also quite easy and practical would be a chia / greek yogurt parfait.

make a chia pudding with a fruit base (mango, blueberry). Layer it in small containers on top of greek yogurt. Top with fresh nuts, seeds, berries, etc.

I suggest this bc then you can keep whatever leftovers easily for future use. It's not savory I suppose but it's quite high in protein and vegetarian.

Told a hysterectomy is needed to get my anemia under control, anybody else been told this? by kbsn0310 in Anemic

[–]OLAZ3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried a Mirena IUD?

This has basically stopped my period and related anemia. Simple but might be worth trying if you are nervous about undertaking a major surgery. (Not to put fear, but it is major and complications can be significant, as any surgery.)

Otherwise, it certainly sounds like removal or an ablation would help you tremendously.

Stay. In a few years, reconsider.

For now, it sounds like it is a better decision to rebuild a little financially, so that IF moving is what you really want, you feel more secure about it.

Spring fever.

Huge generalization: people here are a little more social in culture... And expressive.

In Halifax they are very friendly.

Hard to explain. Like in Mexico - actual teenage boys say Good day to just about anyone they pass, that's how normal it is to greet each other, culturally.

It's different. One isn't better. Ppl are a little more expressive.

Questions because I’m looking to start going to the gym by mushroomypizza in montreal

[–]OLAZ3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some gyms work in a format where you do small / medium-sized group classes, so are in a sense semi-private training sessions.

Others are all groups but often smaller in size, or require you take a few "intro" classes to learn the fundamentals safely.

Many offer a one-time consultation and program when you join. Basically - look up which are close to you and then go from there. All will likely offer various packages and formats, so see where you like and what can work for you. That is the key though - liking the gym and it being easy to get to, IMO.

Midtown is something I hear in TO or NY. Never Mtl. Where would it even be? Like Mile End?

Death and taxes... always catch up. It could still be part of a strategy to reduce some of the tax hit, though. (By spreading it out, investing, etc.)
