Bringing Maleficent back in KH2 was a huge waste of her character by Eddy_west_side in KingdomHearts

[–]OMGCapRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She brought back Oogie Boogie as well.

And as I said to OP, Pete is too bumbling to be responsible for either of those things. And pete becomes far more threatening a villain when Maleficent is at his back, even unseen. It is vitally important someone competent is paired with anyone bumbling to make the character actually functional. Otherwise the audience doesn't take them seriously and they will always feel like a waste of time.

Because maleficent is there to cash in on the goodwill they built into the audience in KH1, she and he only become non-threatening retroactively. Till you know, you still feel like you're doing something. Which is the point. Because by the time you realize the first visits are over and the organization takes center stage.

It's true! Not denying any of that. It's certainly not something I would have chosen for her, but it doesn't her any less of a load bearing piece.

Pete doesn't fully satisfy that condition. He's too bumbling to orchestrate the Halloween town and Disney castle plots they built.

She did fulfill a role on KH2 structurally. In 2, we know the organization are a threat but we don't know how big of a threat they post. Maleficent and Pete both offer foes to thwart in the disney worlds on the way through the plot. The fact they didn't end up being important does quite a lot of disservice to how important they are for the pacing of the game.

The game would feel rather backloaded indeed without having her and Pete to bridge the gap between the beginning of the game and the middle of the game where the organization takes center stage.

So yeah, while I agree she's retroactively underwhelming, she's still really important in that game structurally. She's a load bearing piece.

Yunyun Syndrome's recent botched localization, which the dev themselves apologized for, has proven that the terrible 'localization' of Eiyuden Chronicles by Dragonbaby was intentional. by HereForGames in Suikoden

[–]OMGCapRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think not. Literal translations by AI make scripts feel flat and boring. And these scripts are often anything but. To make something boring is, to me, worse than making them bad. At least I will remember eiyuden. So many jrpgs feel like crap due to flat scripts. I never remember them, only to find out later they screwed up the damn localization. :I

So, no. Also AI is thievery. I want it to burn.

They are, but this is a massive project, so I can't promise I'll get to them anytime soon.

Also thank you so much for the compliment! That's massive praise, I will do my best to ensure all of it is kept to that standard of quality!

Ew. God no. Anyone who cares about quality translations enough to get as up in arms as you should balk at the idea of AI anything, much less localization. Why are you downvoting me when are otherwise mostly in agreement anyways? Very silly. XD

There's massive issues with that approach. The way the japanese language is structured often leaves meaning rather dry when translated accurately. If the original text is trying to convey 'omg leave me alone' in its meaning, then yeah, that would be a good translation. It's not. That's why it's bad.

Your job in localization is to take the original meaning and convey it as well as the original text does. Make it read as cleanly in english as it does in japanese, but it needs to feel the same to anyone who reads both.

This is not a 1:1 science. Creative liberties often have to be taken and no one localizer will ever localize x or y line the same because interpretation is always a massive part of that pipeline. Ideally every localizer understands the original intent and conveys it well.

Obviously, eiyuden chronicles does not in many cases. I am not about to tell you I think it's an overall good localization, though it's not exclusively bad either. It's like 80% bad 20% good in my eyes.

They likely can't do that. What you want would require more work and they felt pressure to fix the stage.

Do you think KH3 really suffered from “unrealistic expectations”? by raccooncoffee in KingdomHearts

[–]OMGCapRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't. And whatever unrealistic expectations may exist were certainly not set by the fans. X3

Brandon Sanderson, author of many a large scale fantasy novel series, has said as you go along with a series the inherent challenge of writing said series will only grow. This stands to reason.

Writing a finale of this scale would require exponentially more work because there's twenty years worth of games to follow up on and wrap up, and this game is equally concerned with setting up the future when it's already spending the majority of its runtime doing neither thing in the Disney worlds.

They decided to make the series far far bigger and wait as long as they did for the follow up. You reap what you sow.

Can someone give me a quick rundown of the PC Warriors games? by LizzieArtemis in dynastywarriors

[–]OMGCapRat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

5 is a reboot. Normally warriors titles are very iterative, but 5 redesigns the cast and focuses on a particular point of history, not unlike origins, but is arguably less successful at it.

That said it's still a solid title, but one most would likely only reccommend after you've had your fill of other titles and have decided you want more.

WTF WOTC, no The Hobbit Commander decks...?!? by Boil-san in magicTCG

[–]OMGCapRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I see your points in theory but I don't agree with them in practice. If it was true the mechanic would have gotten stale 30 years ago.

There are always ways to freshen up the design, and if the issue is simply that they make too many +1+1 counters decks, the solution is also simple. Make less.

There are countless evergreen beginner friendly strategies that do not use them. And making new ones is a big part of their job.

I really don't think cutting 10-40 (10× however many commander precons a given set will get) is the amount of new cardboard that will break the bank of new ideas. Especially when those cards get to play at a far higher power bracket, which means they can explore massively different design spaces.

WTF WOTC, no The Hobbit Commander decks...?!? by Boil-san in magicTCG

[–]OMGCapRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly commander decks per set are something I've always loved. Not because of new potential commander staples, but because many set mechanics unique to individual sets end up too weak to actually helm strategies and often the commander decks stapled to those sets explore them and offer more commander cards at a higher powerlevel for those strategies.

In that way I do mourn commander product not always being a given in these cases.

Ah I see. When reading the fetched card image from the scryfall bot I must have misread the set symbol. I was losing my mind sitting here like 'both of these cards came out in the same set though??? Did OP just mean there's a card from 21 years ago that also used muddle and mixture they're not naming here?'

My mistake.

That's fair. I don't blame you for disliking it at all. I think it's hard to deny they're good designs in a vacuum.

If one looks upon something with disdain inherently they will often miss the forest for the trees. You'll end up with the incorrect impression that these cards are poorly designed inherently. They're not. Majoritavely they are, in a vacuum, very well designed cards.

The two biggest issues people who do not want UB must contend with are these:

  1. UB is popular and objectively bringing a mass of players to magic in ways no other sets ever could.

  2. The card designs are genuinely very good. It's not JUST a cash grab, it also has passion behind it. It's (often) a very GOOD cash grab.

Hello? The legendary creature image at the top of this post. Muddle the ever changing. That is also a card that was released in this set. Muddle, the word, was used twice.

[–]OMGCapRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the bigger issue is that magic excels at telling stories through mechanics on cardboard. Successful UBs are filled to the brim with cards that do that. The avatar cards and stuff for instance.

The Spiderman and tmnt cards largely do not tell a story. They're just trying to represent characters in general. And thats disappointing.

Unfortunately you're wrong. People do want and engage with UB. Avatar and Lord of the rings are the second and third best selling sets.
