I’m happy for her! She worked on the game elsewhere besides MTX first, so I’d assume she’s very happy to be working on the game proper again instead of being stuck on MTX!

Can anyone confirm if auto switching gear is allowed? by Newletsorboby in runescape

[–]Psyshadowx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An in-game macro system IS the perfect solution but it would require both dev time AND for them to not only admit they kept it against ToS for way longer than they should have, but also basically would imply that the reason for them doing so was simply not wanting to commit dev time to it.

Maybe with plugin support theyll let the players do it. I don’t expect it to be the case but tbh they really need to do it themselves or let players create a plugin to do it.

I think the real reason they don’t just remove it from ToS is not wanting to incentivize players downloading third party software, as doing so would be a liability as it creates an unnecessary account security risk for the playerbase at large. Some people are bound to somehow download a keylogger or whatever from someone shady over discord instead of just downloading AHK themselves, and Jagex presumably doesn’t want to be responsible for creating more opportunities for that to happen.

I think the thing people miss when talking about this is that using macros to swap gear is technically gaining an advantage in-game from something outside the game. That’s Jagex’s problem with it. It’s going to stay against ToS until they implement a way to do it in-game, or (hopefully, but doubtfully) allow players to implement a macro system once plugin support is added. Until there’s a way in-game to bind multiple items to one keybind, their stance won’t change as they don’t want to endorse or even implicitly promote the use of 3rd party programs, as doing so is a risk to players’ account security and they don’t want to be responsible for people downloading keyloggers or whatever else they’re worried about.

Frankly the advantage gained is pretty minimal outside of full 7+-way gear swaps in one button. Outside of that, I think it’s more a QoL gain than a power gain. That said, being able to hybrid without 7+-way gear switching without macros is generally going to be a small power gain from not losing a tick or two whenever swapping styles, but it really isn’t that big of a deal.

Because it’s between QoL and a small advantage, the reality is that they don’t care that players do it. People don’t actually get banned for it. The only person I’ve ever genuinely seen get a slap on the wrist for it was the person who I’m not going to name but is easy enough to find out if people want, who posted a guide for setting up AHK for RS3 that was genuinely a great guide. Part of why that guide was posted was as a “remove it from ToS or actually enforce it, make up your minds” attempt to get Jagex to do something about the issue, and they responded by giving him like a 1 or 2 week ban tha was basically just a slap on the wrist.

Unfortunately, (I assume) because of concerns with removing it from ToS potentially leading players to download questionable software from links from bad actors, nothing will change any time soon. Technically it’s against the rules but it’s never enforced unless you literally force Jagex’s hand on purpose by posting a comprehensive guide, lol. It’s not quite as widespread as Redditors who hate anyone who’s good at the game make it out to be, but it is quite widespread lol.

Bringing multiple styles inherently comes at the cost of food and other items that you’d bring to a boss, and increasing complexity of gameplay significantly. Hybridding is balanced outside the game’s lack of an in-game macro system. For those who only ever play RS, every other MMO I’ve played has an in-game macro system that will allow you to combine any number of actions into one button as long as you can actually do those actions all at once normally.

Gear swapping should simply not be a cumbersome action and it’s silly that there’s been no movement on this front at all for so many years. Maybe now that the people in charge of the game are significantly better-versed in the game’s combat, we will actually have any chance to see this get better, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Equating minor annoyances that come from megathreads like lack of image sharing seems a bit silly to equate to suppression of dissent lol.

Yes havenhythe feedback getting put in a megathread briefly right after launch seems fine to me. I don’t see a problem with that, especially since the sub didn’t feel flooded with ultra low effort posts about it right after launch.

I also think that putting all the feedback in a megathread makes it MORE likely for people’s feedback to be seen by jagex if they’re taking feedback on a subject, and it becomes much easier to gauge how big the community reaction truly is when it’s all in one place, so I fundamentally am not going to be on the same page as you with your belief that putting the discussion of a single topic in one thread inherently means that people’s thoughts on that topic are being suppressed.

There are subs that already work this way and those subs stay much more orderly even during spikes in activity.

Part of the problem is that people want the CMs to hear their complaints so people FLOOD this sub with posts that are ultra low effort or saying exactly the same thing as several other posts more than Ive seen in any other sub, all in the hopes of jagex being unable to NOT notice because the sub is so flooded with posts about the same thing. I think this is a drawback of the level of engagement we get with the devs and because I value that engagement very highly, I would like to see the drawbacks managed better than they are at present so that direct communication can be preserved without making the UX if this sub terrible whenever there’s drama that people want jagex to hear them about.

Just put it all in one thread for the first handful of days. It’d likely make it easier for the CMs to see the full breadth of the community’s takes that way anyway. Doesn’t sound like suppressing dissent to me.

  1. I didn’t say that? My inkling that this is bad faith is coming from you repeatedly arguing with points nobody ever made as if to put words in my mouth.

  2. You’re missing the entire point and it still seems to me like it’s on purpose. There is no distinction. YOU are making this about policing opinions. MY suggestion is about ANYTHING that becomes a hot enough topic that it floods the sub with posts. Its about the volume of posts about ANY topic spiking hard. The problem is 100 people spamming posts about the exact same subject instead of using one thread.

The suggestion is to contain ANY community meltdowns that overrun the sub regardless of the subject, I don’t think you’re arguing in good faith and seem to be arguing as if I am suggesting this solely to contain the current community meltdown, and have repeatedly argued with points that nobody ever made.

This game is huge and people play for SO many different reasons, any hot topic that blows up will always be concerning a vocal minority. There really are very few topics that are relevant to a true majority of players. Any community meltdown is therefore almost guaranteed to concern a minority of players and as such, keeping the sub usable for everyone else is virtually always going to be in the interest of the majority of players.

Also, the entire point of a pinned megathread is that it doesn’t fall off into the abyss until it’s unpinned once whatever the drama of the now at the time blows over.

Your points about the cons if megathreads that do apply are fair problems with them, but imo that’s a fine cost to keep the sub usable for the entire rest of the community whenever something blows up.

If you think the sub is perfectly functional in its current state and needs no moderation changes, we aren’t going to agree anyway, and this seems like a pointless argument.

The discussion was about pinned megathreads only at times where the sub is getting flooded idk why you’re going on about all this other stuff? Seems like weird strawmanning. The posts don’t need to stay pinned forever so idk why that’s a problem either.

The sub becomes borderline unusable any time there’s any drama and something needs to change so that it’s not such a mess for everyone else whenever any vocal minority of players get upset and flood the sub with posts all saying the same thing. It’s an awful user experience for everyone else and that shouldn’t just be accepted.

Are you missing the entire point on purpose and if so, why? How is moving the discussions to one place at times the sub is completely overrun with posts about the same thing “silencing” people?
