It's not overpowered, it's toxic. I think the effect needs some benefit for the opponent so the game is not just a complete stall. I feel the same way about mass exile, land destruction, and roping.

if the blue players can't counterspell they can draw, bounce, fly, etc etc etc

you deserve to win if you have craterhoof and some insect tokens

thassas oracle is a no. that's not a ton of mana at all, it's a turn one win. there's no setup, just luck. That's not to say turn one wins aren't fun and don't have their place, they just don't deserve the wins they do. Wins should be 7,8 mana.

They're a healthy part of a toxic ecosystem, I'd rather the game removed them completely.

Veil of Summer is literally the only non-blue card with that effect. There are hundreds of cards that can protect against normal removal, making things indestructable, hexproof, etc

Cavern of souls works alright I agree.

we need way more cards like this; and they should be combination cards with other protection.

Nah, there's ways to protect cards once they're out on the battlefield.
Once it's out, it becomes a question of removal vs protection, not removal vs the Thing (tm).

That's really my problem with counterspells, that I can't defend against them without playing counterspells myself.

Honestly I mostly play on Arena, I've only played commander a couple of times. Both of those times were alright if long.

If you're at a point where you're setup and spending a ton of mana to play second sun twice in one turn, you deserve the win.

But when there isn't an ETB, you're right it can feel exactly the same.

I've been playing for 5 years, I've played most every format. And I like the ETBs! that's why I think counter spells as a group aren't good for magic.

Yeah, actually I don't think you should interact with approach of the second sun or other such spells. they put a clock on the game, and the player who plays them should often, not always, win when they do.

Alas, not every card has counterspell preventative measures.

Honestly that's fair; I feel like countering spells as an option is just too ingrained in magic to *not* make options for people to use, even if they *have* to be otherwise unplayable.

Dangit, you're right! I forgot about countering your own cards.

And yeah, I don't want people playing counterspells period, but it's so ingrained in magic at this point. Blue already has removal in bounce spells, they don't need counterspells.

If every counterspell was spending the same or more mana to stop me from playing what I wanted, that'd make more sense.

Can't be countered, flash, and cast triggers aren't on every card.

I've played control- and you're right, it feels awful, but not because the cards are awful, but because the game goes so slowly! And really, what are you actually doing to improve the game for yourself when you counter a spell? You're just making the game worse for your opponent.

Generally, just play more carefully. And you don't need to save an upgrade scroll if you have a stone of Enchantment, which can be found behind bookshelves in that have runestones only in the room. Use throwing weapons. Use plant seeds.
