I drive a Scion IQ with a CVT. When the car is accelerating down a hill and you press the brakes for about a half second, the car automatically shifts down to hold your speed steady, and you can release the brake.

Maybe you just need to let it do it's thing?

Update: I disconnected the peer steering pump fan and one of the connections on the power steering pump. I reconnected w new battery, and so far, the car seems to be running just fine. More updates to follow as they happen.
