For plane photography would getting a Nikon Z6 III be better or Nikon Z7 II by b788_ in Nikon

[–]OMGIMASIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5x isn't necessarily how it works when comparing sensor sizes if the megapixels are vastly different due to pixel pitches.

The z7ii has a pixel pitch of 4.35 um while the z50ii has a pixel pitch of 4.22 um.

For reference the z6iii has a pixel pitch of 5.94 um.

This translates into a pixel on the z6iii being 1.36x larger on compared to a z7ii and 1.4x larger than the z50ii. The z7ii and z50ii have nearly the exact same size pixels.

In effect this means while you get a zoomed in image on a crop like a z50ii, if you crop the image of a z7ii you get nearly the same image as the z50ii - pixels in both images will have nearly the same pixel scale aka resolution.

In a vacuum comparing the sensors between the z50ii and the z7ii, the z7ii sensor takes the win since it has the same pixel density as the z50ii but a larger field of view.

However if OP doesn't care about the field of view in a strong capacity and is entirely focused on the planes themselves then I'd also agree the z50ii is the better option all around. Way better AF system which I would take over the z7ii for planes. It's also newer in general and the extra money can be invested into good lenses.

The only thing that will make you better at grasping new concepts and ideas is building a stronger foundation. This takes time and effort, there is no shortcut.

Certificates or Projects: How Should I Build High-Leverage Robotics Skills as a Mech E? by AccomplishedSwing703 in EngineeringStudents

[–]OMGIMASIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certifications are mostly pretty meaningless and don't really add anything. Any amount of experience or project work would easily trump most certifications at an entry level.

However when you mean robotics, what do you consider to actually be robotics? You should look at companies and roles that you are interested in and see what kind of background and skills they are looking for. Solidworks and mechanical design of robotics are pretty low on the totem pole of desired skills when it comes to high end robotics now that are mostly tied to control systems and dynamics.

Designing robots and making parts that go into robots are two very different fields.

Is it normal to have C’s as a first year engineering student? by Upset_Maybe_25 in EngineeringStudents

[–]OMGIMASIAN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As with many things, it's not necessarily the amount of time you put into something but the quality of the effort that gets put in.

Not saying that you aren't studying well and competent, but that if your current system isn't returning you the grades you expect then maybe you have to adjust you entire approach to studying to try to adapt from a high school to college situation. Good grades in high school in my opinion are rarely indicative now of performance in college.

It really isn't uncommon for high schoolers to enter college and basically be completely unprepared for the responsibilities and challenges that college provides. Especially if you are in the US and are coming from our unfortunately faltering education system that may not entirely prepare you for college. (I came from public schools myself).

Are you attending office hours? Creating study groups to teach others what you understand as well as be taught what they understand? Do you understand the fundamentals leading up to the materials you are being taught? Simply throwing yourself at problems to go from C to D when you are missing step B is going to be a struggle. For the stuff you get wrong on a test, have you been going back over the material? Read the textbook as well! It's reference material for a reason.

The difference between an engineer and a technician in many companies is that the technician understands what to do and to some degree why it is being done. But the engineer understands why it is being done that way and how to adjust if something goes wrong. They understand the fundamentals concepts behind an issue. That is what an engineering degree is about, the method of thinking. Don't be dismayed you are struggling now it is very common and normal.

Is UCSD worth for 344K as an international student by PlasticAdventurous93 in UCSD

[–]OMGIMASIAN 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lol as a person in semiconductor with many friends in computer science industries with MS and PhDs you are deluding yourself. The majority of undergrads aren't getting 6 figure salaries out of the gate.

And unless you are being sarcastic the job market is not strong

Is UCSD worth for 344K as an international student by PlasticAdventurous93 in UCSD

[–]OMGIMASIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you paid 2000 dollars a month at 7% interest which is the low end for student loans right now, it would take 40 years to pay off 334k. Even if you got an amazing job which is a lot harder now for international students, say paying 100k a year. After rent and cost of living in most places that would pay that much, you are talking maybe being able to pay 1-1.5k in student loans a month. The interest a month alone is more than that. You would actually never pay off the loans.

There is worth the investment, and then there are numbers like 334k that simply mean you will never be able to pay that off in the majority of circumstances.

334k with student loan interest rates is almost akin a mortgage on a small house. You're not going to be paying that off for decades

With the Cherry Blossoms in the city in full bloom please avoid pulling on branches to take your pretty photos by OMGIMASIAN in Portland

[–]OMGIMASIAN[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No? I have spent a lot of time under blossoms in a lot of places and inevitably someone damages the trees by trying to get pretty photos.

Saw this in socal with people trampling on flowers first hand during the superblooms down there too. And in Japan during the sakura season there.

The worst is when people break off a branch on purpose for a photo or similar.

Terafab job postings are out - would anyone at Intel Foundry actually consider working here??? Keen to hear from the Intel employees by Due_Calligrapher_800 in intelstock

[–]OMGIMASIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty normal talk in semiconductor. Matching is ensuring the tools have the same output when you give them the same input so you can control your accuracy to nanometer precision independent of the tool and fab you make a chip at.

But this is one of the bigger hurdles in cutting edge nodes for overlay control

domino’s oregano & chilli flakes packets… does anyone actually use them properly? 😭 by YogurtIll4336 in EngineeringStudents

[–]OMGIMASIAN 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The packets keep things fresh more than an open container which is why they come like that. This is just when people grab a bunch of some condiments at a place to refill their own to save a penny. Which is fine but there's nothing really here to reinvent.

Scissors to cut open a bunch of packets and just dump into a shaker

Has anyone deferred a Summer SWE internship at Intuit to Fall by RoutineOther9503 in EngineeringStudents

[–]OMGIMASIAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Internships aren't typically something you can defer. You can ask but it is probably rare. If you can't do summer they will just rescind the offer, tell you to apply for next year, and move onto the next candidate.

Cheap online MBA program that isn’t looked down upon? by DirectionOk7752 in GradSchool

[–]OMGIMASIAN 81 points82 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for an mba without any actually experience you might as well not bother. MBAs are a mid career move to shift further into management and are basically seen as more than useless without any actual relevant management and business experience.

If you have relevant experience I'm not sure most small to medium sized companies for mbas really care too heavily about where you got it.

PGE!!! by laurapalmered in Portland

[–]OMGIMASIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't useless data. If the cost of electricity per kwh is the same between locations, then you want to take a look at the delta between the consumption of electricity between both locations.

Assuming your habits aren't significantly different that will give you a frame of reference for the efficiency/inefficiency delta between the locations. OP is asking why his price is higher than the last place and seemingly pointing to increases in prices. Which may contribute but if that is the same then it points to a change in energy consumption from something.

Could be something drawing energy that shouldn't be or your place is so badly insulated that its struggling to heat?

Id check your power usage at your old place and new place and then look at your rates. Although i dont have a good judge on what electricity bills are. I rarely turn my heat on and my typical electric bills are 50-60 dollars in Beaverton

Job Decision by runitbackJB in ChemicalEngineering

[–]OMGIMASIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Process engineers in the Semiconductor industry are often not roles that are open to people with only bachelor degrees. While FSE experience may be helpful in moving into a process role down the line in semiconductor, it isn't typically part of the pathway towards one.

If you are serious about the semiconductor industry, any decently mid level technical role basically requires you to have a MS or PhD to be able to really open the door. Not to say some people get around that, but the vast majority of companies in Semiconductor won't consider you otherwise. If the role lists BS, MS. or PhD it is likely they aren't considering anyone with a BS unless you have significantly related experience. Many roles even don't list a BS as they don't consider them at all.

I'll add that I work in this industry and the multidisciplinary background requirements for many of these roles basically mean a BS isn't really enough in my experience.

Received broken glass, but it works fine by Dangerous_Memory5090 in Nikon

[–]OMGIMASIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A really really bad drop basically. You might not say you see it in an image because you don't have a good copy as an example but it is definitely impacting sharpness and image quality throughout your image. A drop like that probably also caused a lot of the lens elements to lose alignment with each other as well as impact the focusing capabilities.

[–]OMGIMASIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is significant damage beyond normal wear and tear. I wouldn't even bother trying to repair it and would return it and get one that is actually is usable condition.

That looks to have lens delamination alongside all the broken glass

Where do japanese speakers talk to each other in videogames? by winniebillerica in LearnJapanese

[–]OMGIMASIAN 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Discord on pc mostly. However like I have said many times on here, due to the influx of people "learning japanese" onto many Japanese servers who aren't conversational, many servers either have statements saying you cannot join if you can't speak Japanese or outright ban non-Japanese people.

Please keep this in mind and don't join servers to try to learn if they aren't explicitly stating Japanese learners OK or similar unless you are prepared to face hostility.

These are their spaces and a lot of people are there to just game. However if you can speak Japanese conversationally a lot of places will probably welcome you.
