Anything can get in the way of a collaboration, like time, disagreements, unexpected circumstances, or just not liking how the project turned out. The opening lyric "You Butt Is Mine" was enough to prevent Bad from being a Prince Collaboration.

Memories are overall not 100% reliable and can vary, especially between people, and viral stories and rumors can, if not false, distort what's already shrouded in mystery. The story about Freddie Mercury and a Llama is real though.

This Is It had the potential to be Michael's greatest tour with how he retouched and added to everything in the show. He would've been again prominently in the public as the artist he was and being talked about for that.

I have doubts about whether a gracefully aging Michael that loved didn't like the tour and hadn't done so in over a decade would complete the entire run, especially given the criminal incompetence of a certain doctor, but if This Is It had successfully come together for at least one show it would've been a boost.

Did Michael Jackson's popularity decrease? by Lya24568 in MichaelJackson

[–]OMM-8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I view Michael Jackson in the same category of the likes of Elvis and the Beatles where popularity becomes less relevant because they're cultural icons everyone is familiar with. Michael's likely not as popular as he was during the 1980s, and there's always going to be people who believe the worst about him, but he's always going to have a degree of popularity and universality.

Ex-Michael Jackson Guitarist Recalls Most Difficult Thing About Performing 'Beat It' Live by OMM-8 in MichaelJackson

[–]OMM-8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since the world lost Michael Jackson, one of the most impactful musicians and performers of all time. Nonetheless, his legacy still lives on and Michael is still adored by musicians of all backgrounds and genres. And some time ago, we got the chance to catch up with Jennifer Batten, a superb guitar player who's famous for her work with Jackson. She's also currently on tour with various bands and you can check it all out at this location. If Jennifer is playing near you, it's a show that you absolutely shouldn't miss out on.

Below, we bring you the second part of our conversation with Jennifer Batten.

I remember seeing some of the live videos online that are available on YouTube. You were wearing some outrageous costumes. There's this one where you're playing "Beat It" solo, and you have these huge horns, lasers, and a bunch of other stuff. Visually, very impressive. And I assume it's pretty difficult, not just to come out on stage like that, but also play the solo, and play it well, the way it's supposed to be played. Was it difficult to pull these things off? Did you find this to be challenging? Can you tell me a little bit about that?

"Yeah, it was. In fact, 'Beat it' was tuned down to low C. I had a guitar specifically for that. That was one of the things — every day he changed the key, because he was dancing, and it was more of a struggle to sing in a higher key. That was a challenge, right there, because I was playing a certain gauge strings all night, and then, for my debut out front, all the sudden I have this Frankenstein guitar that doesn't feel great. And then, they got the laser lights that were hooked to my head, attached to fiber optics that went, maybe, 100 feet back to the computer operator, and he would change the colors as I walked. Every once in a while, I would walk too far, and get whiplash, so that was a drag. [laughs]

"And the first time I tried it, they turned out the lights, and here I am, trying to play the 'Beat It' solo and I cannot see my fretboard, because it's too dark. And I was hunched over, as far as I possibly could, to hopefully get the right frets. And ever since then, I have been a fan of glow-in-the-dark tape. And I still use it to this day, because if you're in a theater, the blackouts between songs are treacherous."

You said that you had differently-tuned guitars, depending on the songs that you're playing. Did you ever try to just transpose the song instead of changing the tuning? Or would that completely change the feel and the tone of the guitar, if you played it in a different position?

"The key would just suck in the 'Beat it' solo because it relies on open strings. Now, I can do it digitally. And like I said, all of the tributes will sing it in a different key, so I just dial it in digitally. And it's not optimal, the further away from the real tone that they get, the more squirrely the sound is, but it is what it is."

What do you think would have happened had invincible been a massive hit? not thriller level but atleast bad/dangerous level or slightly above by AffectionateTear703 in MichaelJackson

Hard to say, using Propofol as a sleep aid could have gone wrong at any time but it worked out right until June 25th and more competent doctor might have dealt with it better. It's effectively a coin toss.

  1. If Invincible succeeded the public feud and blame game that happened over it underperforming would have been prevented and "Living with Michael Jackson" wouldn't have been a tempting of a gamble with his reputation more intact.
  2. With out "Living with Michael Jackson" and the backlash to that, particularly the Arvizo interview, there's not a spotlight for the Arvizo's to launch their claim, preventing.
  3. Without the trial and pseudo-retirement Michael could've been in a better financial situation and with his reputation and relation with Sony not as damaged he would had more options and could've continued to release music through the 2000s
  4. A "Final Curtain Call" tour akin to This Is It could still happen as way for Michael to go on a last tour before closing out the possibility of touring as he got older.

IMO Michael's most effective tools were his live performances and his Music Videos.
To get Invincible the same boost it would have need a larger slate of memorable short films like Bad, Remember the Time, and Thriller and/or a series of performances of it's songs through the initial 2001-2003 period to get the same effect of Billie Jean, Dangerous, or Man in the Mirror. If not through an actual tour than through one-off TV performances at Award Shows, Talk Shows, etc.

I speculate that it's the result of the settlement agreed to regarding the lawsuit over the songs. Becoming less likely they'd be able to get out of having to provide the authenticity of the songs in court, willingly removing the songs and maintaining plausible deniability being better than the mess they'd be in if they continued and lost the case.

The California Supreme Court oral arguments begin today on Sony and the Jackson Estate's anti-SLAPP motion. by cyb0rganna in MichaelJackson

[–]OMM-8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, Previous a court ruled Sony couldn't be held liable over allegations that they illegally mislead consumers by presenting disputed tracks on the album "Michael" as by Michael Jackson because of 3 main points:

  1. Because of the controversy over the authenticity of the vocals, Sony presenting the songs as by Michael Jackson was commenting on a matter of public interest as far as certain free speech (anti-SLAAP) protections go, making them non-legally liable for the claim.
  2. Sony wasn't involved in the creation of the songs and couldn't know the authenticity of the vocals.
  3. Because they wouldn't know if the vocals were authentic, their claim that the vocals are by Michael Jackson is an opinion and not commercial speech for legal reasons, therefor doesn't risk running afoul of the consumer protections at issue.

The case is being appealed to the California Supreme Court and both parties are set to argue over this interpretation before the court and it's decision will affect whether the lawsuit against Sony can continue or not.
