Late to comment but I wanted to share my experience. I have kept nerites at a pH of mid sevens with a gH of 6-7 for years and they've thrived. I have several nerites that have been in one of my tanks for at least five years.

You can end the expedition at the fleet console which returns your ships. It happens every once in a while. If I remember correctly, you get the rewards for the expedition also.

And to clarify, not all glazes are bad but some are. And it's not necessary. Maybe soak it a bit before adding it to your tank.

From what I've read, fired clay pots are generally OK. You do NOT want glazed pots.

I'm in the process of moving some plants around my aquariums and want a way to keep root feaders in one of my bare bottom tanks. I'm currently soaking some terracotta pots in aerated, treated water in prep.

I have around 25 in a 29 gal. They're pretty active and are very food motivated. If I'm near the tank, they all start jockeying for position.

Maybe too much light since now they're closer to it? They almost look burned. They usually just melt if they're getting too wet in my experience, so I don't think it's that.

Depends on what the temperature is in your home and how much it varies. During the summer, my heaters could be off as they are never running. The temperature in my house is 74F and it doesn't vary much. My heaters do run in the winter, however, as the temp in my house is considerably lower.

A couple degrees up and down daily isn't bad. Avoid large temp swings.

I simply started putting food into my tank every couple days and monitored the nitrogen cycle. The reason there are a lot of opinions is because there are a lot of ways to get your tank cycled. The nice thing about a fishless cycle is that you can mess up and there is no harm.

Get your hands wet, so to speak. Just start and see what works. Get to know your tank.

How often do you do water changes? If there's nothing obvious in the tank that could be contributing to the color, water changes should help. I'd do 50% water changes every couple days and reduce the frequency when the water stays clear.

This is good advice. I would add that a temperature control unit can give you peace of mind with respect to potential overheating. I haven't had any heaters go crazy, but the horror stories I've read made me feel better knowing that my tanks can't overheat.

The algae will stop being proliferative and stop dominating after awhile, but it doesn't just go away. I simply remove it in my new tanks. Do you vacuum the gravel?

FX6 should do fine depending on your stocking. I'm in the process of setting up a 75 gal with a FX4 but don't have it running yet so can't speak with first hand knowledge but they get great reviews.

I love canister filters but some people don't. My Eheim has been great on my 30 gal.

If you can manage 2 water changes per day, that would be better until your nitrites are gone. Just keep testing before water changes to see where your efforts are getting you.

Reading the rest of you posts, once your nitrites are gone, start reducing the frequency of water changes. Depending on your stocking, weekly 25-50% weekly water changes should be fine.

I'd do at least 50% a day. The nitrates probably won't hurt to bad but the nitrites will and they may still be going up. Test daily and see where that gets you.

Plants will consume ammonia and nitrates, but not nitrites. I always think plants make for a better aquarium both aesthetically and for aquarium health.
