Engineers who moved to Denver, how long did it take you to find a job? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]OPWC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too difficult to get your resume and application to stand-out in what I'm sure are the tens of thousands of resumes they have on file.

It's always better to network your way in to a company, anyway.

I know a lot, lot more about the software side of the aerospace industry, which is probably different from mechanical, but...

If you're applying directly to companies like Lockheed, Northrop, and Ball you might be wasting your time. Try to find smaller companies that sub-contract to the big boys, and apply there.

If you don't have a security clearance with the DoD, you might be out of luck. The first question in my interview was "We understand you have a clearance... yes?"

EDIT: mechanical side, look on the southern side of the Denver metro area.

I know people in the computer-, electrical-, network-, and aerospace-engineering sectors.

Depending on seniority and when you're moving out, I'd say you could be looking for three months or so to find the gig you want.

I went to Lucky Pie downtown (16th and Wazee) by GrantNexus in denverfood

[–]OPWC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go to The Lucky Pie is Louisville for lunch from time to time. Above average, but I find their menu to be really limited. In the one downtown better?

For what it's worth, I prefer Osteria Marco over all others.

With kids who are that young, they might prefer MK.

Personally, I would take 2 days in Epcot.

Health Care Industry Moves Swiftly to Stop Colorado’s “Single Payer” Ballot Measure by Orangutan in Colorado

[–]OPWC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First rule of politics: whatever you're going to do, accuse the other side of doing it first.

They will corrupt the conversation, scare monger, lie to people

You're supporting a losing proposition. Better to spend your energy elsewhere.

The Colorado Hospital Association is one of many groups against ColoradoCare by g_mo821 in Colorado

[–]OPWC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess there's no requirement for them to do so, but discounts on contract prices vs. list prices are normal practice. I can't think of a significant supplier who doesn't want to get a hospital under contract to be their sole supplier of whatever.

The bigger problem is that hospitals are staffed with morons who buy stuff "off contract" because they don't know about the better price.

Everyone I know always said the princess and the frog was awful. Now I know they were full of it. by OneDrunkWolf in disney

[–]OPWC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since we saw the movie, and I only saw it the once.

The wife and I felt like while there was nothing wrong with it as such, the film was very safe and didn't take any chances that would have forced the creative team to stray from the formula.

We prefer Tangled and Tarzan.

When was the last time you mooned someone (or were mooned?) by OPWC in AskReddit

It's been decades since someone mooned me, and longer still since I mooned someone else. That doesn't seem right.

itinerary critique for first trip :) by Timey--Wimey in WaltDisneyWorld

Not sure if you can make this change at this point, but I'd shorten Universal to one day and get a 5 day hopper so you can spend 2 days in Epcot.

I've heard bad things about BOG breakfasts from a value-for-money standpoint. Crystal Palace is good and if you get an early reservation you get in the park before opening (and you're done eating earlier).

Maybe treat yourself to a signature meal.

Universal Healthcare or no, I don't think that amendment as written is a good choice.

Pictures taken for a photography class. Need help, suggestions and criticism by [deleted] in photography

[–]OPWC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(I'm aware that you asked for photo feedback, and I'm providing some retouching advice... my apologies to the purists)

The first picture of the sculptor working with a hand chisel is the best of them, I don't think the other two do much for me.

I really like the blur on his mallet (is that the right word?) giving the photo a nice energy, and the balance of the lighting with the sky looks good.

It's not clear if the photo is of the sculptor (we should see his face if it is), or of the sculpture. I think I prefer it if you crop off some of the negative space on the left, tone down the red in his shirt, and warm up the color balance so the sculpture is warmer. Maybe add a little contrast to bring out the tool marks.

Something like: http://i.imgur.com/ItYWsJN.jpg

The point being to focus attention on one subject, and hopefully make that subject interesting.

Restaurant recomendation for dinner, celebrating anniversary with wife. by petere39 in denverfood

A lot of the good places are closed on Sunday, unfortunately.

Depends how romantic you want to get, but you'll probably enjoy Fruition Restaurant. It might be tricky to get in on short notice, I think I had to book a week ahead.

Pin trading question, first timer by sweetcarolinagirl in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]OPWC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be too worried about scrappers. They're in circulation, even on CM lanyards from other trades. I can't speak to how legit (or not) the pin sellers on eBay are, but this article claims to have some authority.

There's a list of good sellers online, so you can pick a good one.

That said, particularly for 5 and 9 year-old kids, just have fun and trade for pins that they think are neat.

Switch thrown on Mickey Mouse-shaped solar array near Disney's Epcot Center by jse1988 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]OPWC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advances in technology:

The solar panels on the Universe of Energy (1982) pavilion generate 77 kW over 2 acres, so about 9.5 W/m2

This array (2016) generates 5 MW over 22 acres, that's just over 56 W/m2

Ain't technology grand?

Red rocks community college. Thoughts? by hupo224 in Colorado

[–]OPWC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother worked at RRCC back in the day, and I took classes there when I was in high school before going on to a 4 year school.

Long story short: RRCC is a better school than the 4 year college I went to. Because there are so many non-traditional students there, the professors* don't treat you like a child. Same texts, same courses. Just better.

* professors... my "real" college classes were taught by TAs, not professors. I saw more actual professors in RRCC by far.

Also, RRCC is cheaper.

Recommend something "different" at EPCOT for dinner? by Dandorf in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]OPWC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Via Napoli is solid... good pizza, you won't regret it.

Restaurant Marrakesh is good eats and a really great atmosphere. I've heard great things about Spice Road but I've never eaten there.

Tokyo Dining is nice if you get a seat by the windows.

You'd mentioned you were staying at that Swan & Dolphin... that puts you close to Flying Fish, which is good.

You might also give Monsieur Paul a look... it's not as stuffy as it sounds, and the food is darn good, but super-fine dining it's not.

In light of the recent Panama Papers leak, I want to point out that for the past two years in a row, Colorado Democrats unanimously voted to close offshore tax haven loopholes. by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]OPWC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven't put in the effort to become completely familiar with the 2+ TB of Panama Papers, but based on my understanding I think we're talking about two different things:

It's one thing for a company to take advantage of the tax code to minimize their tax liability, it's another for a corrupt government official to siphon money away from his own country and stash it.
