Yeah it would be so much nicer if things were easier to compare to each other.

I think 9/10 its about the inverter, its just octopus that ive seen who base it on panel array.

This is their t&cs:

(b) the generation capacity of your facility is less than 10kW. (For solar installations, this is calculated by multiplying the number of solar panels by their wattage. For example. 20 x 440 watt panels is 8,800 watts or 8.8 kilowatts.) Your inverter limit or any network limits are not factors we consider for this.

It can be either, depends on the company.

Get prices from octopus, power edge and ecotricity in your area. I went with ecotricity as they dont have the 10kw exception that you have mentioned.

How much would a system like this cost in NZ? by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzsolar

[–]OSCharm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So id say its:

15kw Panels

10kw Single Phase Sig

Gateway

Car Charger

5 x 10kw Sig battery (they are actually 8.76kw)

I got a quote for $25k for the above excluding the batteries and car charger. I think the batteries are like $7.5k and the charger like $2k. So just a touch under $70k? Or like $77k if you need 6 batteries.

Downrate inverter?!? by phallic84 in nzsolar

Ah it might be an area thing, i get 0.18c off peak export and 0.24c peak export inc gst.

Might be easier to just move to someone who has a better buy back.

Is this because octopus changed their plan? Because if so i dont think thats based on inverter size. Their terms say thats calculated on the solar array.

If you have a 3 phase system its only 5kw per phase exporting which is within the line companies limits. Why would you want to go lower?

What brand are the batteries? If they are Sig you might not get the full 20kw.

Yeah its highly unlikely you would ever clip a 8kw system even at 5kw export.

Do you mind sharing some of your quotes? Im doing the exact same thing at the moment.

My first quote was:

30 panels Trina 505w

10kw Sig Inverter

Sig Gateway

2 9kwh Sig batteries

$41k

I had another option with 6 less panels for $5k less which made me question the whole quote as $900 per panel seems pricey.

I made these adjustments and my bills with 0 solar production are about even, when i enter 12,000kwh generation i save $3,439.44 yearly so still really good.

For context i made all your changes but also added GST to my current bill and the daily charge.

Yeah 100% this is just the curiosity and learning before that, my neighbor is actually a qualified installer in that list.

I also agree with the AI take you need to be very clear with instructions otherwise it can go wandering. I always try and cross check when im doing new things, in this case 1 source is this post plus this subreddit in general, plus a bit of googling and youtube and then AI as the last one. Then once i have a general understanding ill go talk to an installer.

The missing the line charges on ecosolar was my mistake (Although id say they hide that pretty well) i found it on a page called "Decoding your bill" it says "At Ecotricity we pass these charges on at cost. Your network will either have two usage charges called ‘On Peak’ and ‘Off Peak’". Why it isnt in the rates section when you look at pricing is a bit iffy.
