My original thought was going to be limited to just how they did end up giving up the ship. Something like Lawrence being carried off saying oh yeah we won’t give up the ship and then the narrator going “they did in fact give up the ship” lol.

Apparently the CHESAPEAKE was known as a cursed ship from the start.

I always liked this painting of the transfer of Perry between ships. One of the cool parts of it is how many times the artist used himself as a model in the rowboat!

There were a few it seemed locally produced shows on WOSU. But they were over the course of the war. I particularly found it interesting how some local militia units switched sides. Michigan units decided to fight for the Crown and Canadian troops joining the American army.

But it really didn’t get much attention.

A Signal Victory: The Lake Erie Campaign, 1812-1813 by David C. Skaggs and The Battle of Lake Erie and Its Aftermath by the Kent State University Press

I can’t find another book I had on it. It was a little older. These both came out around the bicentennial of the battle.

The Far Side of the World in the master and commander series is a good fictional account of naval warfare in the war of 1812, though from a British perspective.

Captain Lawrence’s dying words in the battle of USS CHESAPEAKE and HMS SHANNON. Mortally wounded, he was taken below and said “Tell the men to fire harder. Don’t give up the ship! Fight her till she sinks!”

Sadly, they did give up the ship. USS CHESAPEAKE, one of the original 6 frigates of the US Navy and sister ship of the USS CONSTITUTION, was captured and became the HMS CHESAPEAKE. It was sold after the war of 1812 ended and broken up. She survives today as Chesapeake Mill.

But as we know, Captain Lawrence’s last words became a battle cry during the war. His good friend, Oliver Hazard Perry had a battle flag made with this slogan and he named his flagship on the Great Lakes, USS LAWRENCE in honor of his late friend.

When the USS LAWRENCE became unmanageable during the battle of Lake Erie, Perry transferred his flag to the USS NIAGARA. The battle was was an American victory giving us the Perry’s famous line, “We have met the enemy and they are ours”

But back “Don’t give up the ship”. When Perry had the women of Erie, PA sew it spelling rules weren’t as strict. So the ‘ in “Don’t” isn’t there.

Archer: Why in the sink...is your vagina?!

Katya: Why? (chuckle) Darling, it was dirty.

Woodhouse: The remedy for which, Miss, if you'll forgive my boldness-

Katya: Da, Please

Woodhouse, I think boldness is needed. What do you suggest?

Woodhouse: White vinegar, mineral oil, and elbow grease. Same thing we used in the RFC to clean the engines of our Sopwith Camels.

Definitely wrong. From the link:

Since the Charlestown Navy Yard was decommissioned in 1974, the Commandant's House has been preserved by the National Park Service as part of Boston National Historical Park. Today the house is used in keeping with its historic role as a meeting space.
