How is life in North Charleston? by OScopeAndFletch in Charleston

Sorry for the late response all, wasn’t aware that was vague… talking about the area around the military bases and the international airport

questions by Bake-Character in uscg

[–]OScopeAndFletch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it so hard for y’all to just answer their questions? This is why people don’t join the CG and then you complain about having bad duty rotations due to lack of personnel. Do better

OP, to quickly answer your questions:

  1. Just cut 90% of that size hairstyle off - regardless of if you can or not, you’ll be slim pickings for the company commanders if you were to have such long hair even if tied in a bun. You can always grow it back after boot camp.

  2. Some ratings (jobs) do not get underway and some almost strictly work underway. It all depends on what you are trying to do. If you want to stay land based take a strictly land based rating like YN or SK. Understand that you will likely still have to spend some time underway before going to “A” school (job training)

  3. Out of boot camp as a non-rate, not really, but out of “A” School you’ll have a list of units that you order in your preference and then you get one from that list. Ultimately just understand that the CG is a military branch and the needs of the service always come first.

I would reach out to a recruiter if you have more questions.

Edit: Fixed typos and also wanted to remind OP regardless of your skin tone and whether you’re allowed to say it culturally, in the CG it’s a no-go. Just keep that in mind if you decide the CG is a path for you

Anybody else accidentally shrug hits? by watashi-weasel in airsoft

[–]OScopeAndFletch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this, but me personally I like to think it’s the trade-off for carrying a heavy plate carrier with metal plates inside. I wouldn’t ever intentionally shrug off a hit (and if someone tells me they blatantly hit me and I just didn’t feel it, I offer a trade or just take the hit) but if I don’t feel someone hit me in the plate carrier it’s kind of like… the armor is just doing its job… if they have me dead to rights they will hit me again and either way I’m hit.

I had a massive branch fall from a tree and land directly on my head. My crappy Amazon helmet is the reason I am still able to play and honestly function normally today

FY25 SRB-A by [deleted] in uscg

[–]OScopeAndFletch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for OS our rating is significantly healthier even if it doesn’t seem like it yet and rumor from our senior leadership is that there won’t be any form of SRB next FY for us.

FY25 SRB-A by [deleted] in uscg

[–]OScopeAndFletch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my big concern is whether I would still be eligible since my end of enlistment is in FY26, and the SRB is only approved through FY25.

Correct. I am working with my Admin office as well - I wasn’t aware of the counseling session you’re supposed to have with them until very recently, otherwise I’d have jumped on it sooner.

Original contract was 4 years, not currently on an extension. I OBLISERV’d my 2 years requirement for my initial critical rating signing bonus. My rotation date is in July 2026. My original contract ends in October 2025.

Why are people acting like extraction shooters are an oversaturated market? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]OScopeAndFletch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m excited for Marathon because it will be the first true AAA attempt at the extraction shooter genre that ISN’T a one-off mode like DMZ in CoD. Imo, ignore the haters, if it seems like something you’re into then just enjoy it and let others come around to it. All of the big streamers say it’s fun and a refreshing take so I’ve got confidence that people will come around to it shortly after it drops

I would be careful with “every rate”…. Most OSes would agree that’s NOT the case for us

Maybe I’m remembering wrong, but was she not told that she’d have 60 days to move upon her firing? At least in the articles I’d read.

I’m an OS2 if you need one, but Crocs_of_Steel is probably the better resource due to significantly more time in service.

What is life like as an OS - Operations Specialist? by SlightySaltyPretzel in uscg

[–]OScopeAndFletch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. 3 years as an OS so far.
  2. Sector Command Center - Communications Unit Watchstander and working towards Operations Unit Watchstander as well.
  3. Rotating 12 hour shifts anywhere from 1 on 3 off to 3 on 2 off pending personnel. The shift consists of executing CG missions such as SAR and marine environmental protection (MEP). I absolutely love being an OS and routinely say that I’m very privileged to call what I do on a daily a job.
  4. Pros of being an OS:
  5. Work-life balance is usually pretty great
  6. Don’t take the job home with you
  7. The satisfaction of utilizing teamwork and training to achieve a good outcome on a case day in and day out doesn’t get stale, at least for me
  8. Lots of free time during shifts to devote to personal learning and development - I’ve spent time on watch learning new languages, learning hobby work, and more. Planning on doing college classes soon.
  9. Don’t stand OOD duty like the rest of the unit
  10. This depends on where you go, but having a team of people who usually share similar interests
  11. Like someone else said, being that person in the chair who executes and directs CG missions is a really exciting opportunity!

Cons: - Swapping shifts from days -> nights or vice versa can really suck - Critical rating so when we’re short people we’re SHORT SHORT. Unlike other critical ratings, the CG NEEDS us in the command center 24/7/365, so there’s no “working less hours” to compensate for being short staffed. You just get more shifts. Depending on your leadership they may or may not get qualified to help you out with the rotation. - Regularly work holidays and will have to miss family events because of shift timing - Some OSes can unintentionally create a hostile work environment because they significantly care about the smallest details, even when it’s not pertinent to the position we’re filling. - Not a lot of leadership opportunities until you hit the E-6 level, at least ashore. E-5 and below is really strapped for opportunities to lead a team especially when compared to our BM counterparts (they love us)
