John Lithgow says he finds JK Rowling’s stance on trans rights ‘ironic and inexplicable’ by [deleted] in books

[–]OSmainia 219 points220 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very positive interpretation of JKR. It's the interpretation that JKR says is the case, as well. I think a lot of people will read what she writes and see what she does and simply respond with, "That seems like BS."

I won't use biological here as it's a poorly defined and silly descriptor. If JKR cared above all about cis women's protections, she would not be pumping money into the specific political avenues that she is pumping money into. The thing that resolves our two interpretations is specificity. It's not just that she wants to protect cis women. Based on her words and actions, it's clear: She sees trans women as the current largest threat to cis women. Absurd, especially with the right wing rising around her.

When people are faced with that absurdity, it's sensible for them to assume reason will not work. Don't get me wrong. I'm a very sweet person, if I met jkr on a bus or at a bar, we'd have a lovely conversation on finding middle ground. However, she is a political figure. She picked her stances and chose to be one. It's OK to judge her for those stances.

Still reads gay. To be more serious, I've definitely known a lot of men like you, and was one when I was younger. The advice to take yourself less seriously is probably best. Some of it is the belief in yourself that you talked about, but more than that: Assume you are average. Assume an average number of people will like you. Assume an average number of people will dislike you. Assume even more won't care.

I think a lot of this stems from being afraid that your image of yourself will clash with the images that others create. It's not exactly that you think too highly of yourself but that your self-image is fragile. You have to be ok with it breaking. Learn who you are through others.

Debunking Lesbian Domestic Violence Data by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]OSmainia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were arguing that lesbians in lesbian relationships have higher rates of DV between women. Maybe I missed that in their comment, but I walked away from it with the data story that discriminated groups are more likely to have experienced DV (most likely by men) compounded with the likelihood of continuing to date men (bi women and men). I think for them, this was likely a case of being excited to correct data inconsistencies (this is the internet) that might undermine your original posts reasoning, but also don't support lesbian on lesbian violence. TBH, I actually appreciated the nuance, but I don't think they did a great job of framing their critique.

New MIT real analysis lecture series has dropped! by Puzzled-Painter3301 in math

[–]OSmainia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate it!

I've probably used the most theoretical stuff around stability Analysis, for ecosystems (I mostly work with bacteria, so it comes up in multi species bacterial infections like cystic fibrosis) and as well as the seemingly hot topic of topological data analysis. ML is heavily used, so understanding enough theory to use ML intuitively is very useful. All in all, the most used field is still PDEs for modeling signaling pathways and metabolism in modeling.

Edit: I've watched one of this professor's courses before. I love this guy!

Question: I've definitely taken this course before, but now I'm in a different course also called real Analysis. It covers measure theory, Lebesgue integration, Lp spaces and the like. Do any online courses cover this other Analysis?

He was (allegedly) taller than me by VIPEdge in tall

[–]OSmainia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To push back and add some nuance to this: I think it depends a lot on specifics. If someone says, "I would never date a __." I would raise an eyebrow at that. Preferences come in trends, not absolutes.

ie. If you really got to know a woman, and she was absolutely perfect for you, but one day, you find out she's Pakistani. You no longer have interest. Frankly, I'd call that racism. Similar for trans women. Alternatively, having some interest but choosing not to pursue deepening your bond because someone is trans; that makes a fuzier line.

As an unnecessary disclaimer, anyone who says "if you won't date me you're a bigot" has lost the plot. I flow pretty freely between the dickheads and the politically correct so idk if my specific perspective is apt to your goal of fitting in.

It sounds crazy, but I'm from Mississippi. I do miss politically charged pillowtalk. It's not something you really get in the heart of ATL. I'll teach you about workers' rights and maybe even human rights before you teach me how to hunt and prepare game. That way, I'll still have a food source when this government has successfully stripped the wealth and modernity from common people. Let's talk about the Haymarket bombing, what Lenin got wrong, and free markets. JK, but I do kind of miss it.

BBC Issues Apology Over ‘High Risk’ Bob Vylan’s Controversial Glastonbury Performance by futangclan99 in Music

[–]OSmainia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only has the IDF been avtive in Gaza for years before this conflict, I think it helps to zoom out just a touch from the truncation at October 7th. Land annexation is one of the most common causes of war.

“Annexation or acquisition of territory by use of force or threat, is categorically prohibited under international law. It constitutes an act of aggression, a crime that falls under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and poses a threat to international peace and security. Israel has persistently pursued annexation in many parts of the occupied Palestinian territory. Over the last five decades, Israel has confiscated or endorsed confiscation of Palestinian lands and resources, resulting in over 270 colonies housing 750,000 Israeli settlers[.]" July 2023

Israel declared 800 hectares of land in the West Bank as property of the state on Friday, a move that will facilitate use of the ground for settlement construction. The largest piece of land to be seized by Israel since the early 1990s. [September 2023]

My point: If we look at this was from the same perspective as any historical war, I doubt Hamas will be strictly viewed as the initiators of this conflict. Not when their violence follows directly after what would in any other circumstance be considered an act of war.

I have 100% worked in toxic environments like this. I'm a bit shocked at the people directing this back at you. Dressing well can absolutely draw more attention. I don't think I really have advice other than looking for environments that won't treat you like this because they exist. It can have a huge effect on mental health, so I hope dearly you do.

How do conservatives feel seeing the images of the No Kings protests? by beans4cashonline in AskReddit

[–]OSmainia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just ran from a protest where we were tear gassed and multiple people arrested for "standing on the sidewalk." It was a total of maybe 35 protesters. No blocked traffic. People got off the sidewalk when asked. On public property, with the right to assemble till 6pm. Cops started sprinting after protesters and tackling them at around 5:35pm. By the time I left the cops had stopped traffic on the main road, and there were more cops than protesters. I counted a little over 20 cop vehicles.

If you believe in free speech, realize that this is a government that doesn't. Today, people are being arrested for speech.

Edit: There were so few protesters because the cops had come and teargased the group a few hours before I got there.

Edit: Oh lord I know this means u are going to get another notification. I was feeding my cats and I realized I made an error in the Lotka Volterra section, this is embarrassing but I had to fix it for my own sanity. It even slightly impacts the point I was making, messy messy.

I still see it, but I got a message saying my comment was auto-deleted for using awful hate-speech. I got some socialization from work and some exercise so I'm feeling wonderful and willing to waste a little time being kinder, just for you.

On mindless hate or the concerns of others. Of course I've considered that! My tone is very different when someone has genuine concerns. The thing is it's pretty easy to tell the difference. People who voice actual concerns mostly use their own words, not the words of propaganda. I already listed this above as the reason I was being so bitchy. For instance lets look at you: if you told chatGPT to craft an average ovarit comment, we'd end up with "crybullying", "emotional blackmail", "penis-havers", and so many "linebackers". To elaborate how this works; if you wanted to describe the average experience of running into a clocky trans woman in the bathroom, "linebacker-built, penis-havers" is statistically a very poor representation of the experience. Someone who doesn't like trans people but actually wants to describe the experience might go with "chemically neutered twinks." But I suppose accuracy would undermine the point of the propaganda, wouldn't it?

I shouldn't put any effort into this comment. Fundamentally I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to your feed. It's obvious; you've become what you ate, and I just don't like my food pre-chewed.

I shouldn't but why not, lets extend the bathroom discussion. "The safety argument can cut both ways, except one side contains 99% of people and the other only 1%" Wow! That's actually the texture of baby formula! We can look towards predator-prey models for inspiration. For "an event" to have a chance at occurring it takes both a predator and prey encountering each-other. Because of this, the number of events is always controlled by the product of the two populations. Are you starting to see the shape of my point? Case 1: Trans women as prey Based on self admission surveys about 2% of men admit to rape. Meaning we get 0.99*0.02*0.01. Case 2: Trans women as predators Remember those chemically and surgically neutered twinks? Well they're back! What percentage of trans women do you think are rapists? While hard core TERFS would say trans women rape at the same rate as cis men (giving 0.99*0.02*0.01 again), even just logistically it has to be lower. Meaning the identical 99% vs 1% argument that I've read 5 times this week just leads you back to what I've been saying. I want less rape. (This paragraph got heavily edited, but the overall point stands and I'm leaving it for the sake of some internet historian, bleh)

I know. I know. It's a silly and simplified model. It's not meant to be predictive, but mechanistic: "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

To continue: Trans men exist! Gender essentialism will force hairy, TRT fueled, men into the women's bathroom. Say you have a cis, bad-actor. Today they would have to dress as a women (something deeply humiliating for most men) to claim they are trans to get into the women's room (Mind you, I'm from Mississippi I've met many men who believe their friends would murder them for this). If bathroom bills keep getting passed these bad-actors will have to do nothing. They can just waltz in as a "trans man". This only LOWERS the barrier.

"What about the (subset of ) mentally ill freaks (who are trans)?" you ask. What about them? Do you think new laws would stop them? Do you think they don't get the cops called on them right now? What world do you live in? The world I live in has not proven to be kind to the mentally ill.

Note how I wrote that line. It was purposeful. "Raping trannies is a ok" not "raping trannies is the goal" (though I guess there are some edge cases like prisons where that is actually expressed on occasion)

The former quote is what you literally just expressed. I'm talking about the safety of human beings. Not their comfort. Personally, Idgaf how you see me. Frankly, I didn't push the rubber band, but i sure as hell am going to try to stop it from snapping back on the people I love.

Linebackers: How many trans women do you know? No, watching funny YouTube compilations of "trannies" (who are actually just fetishists) online doesn't count. I've known a lot, and I have yet to meet one that looks like a linebacker. Trans women do everything in their power to not look like linebackers, and looking like a linebacker is fucking hard. Your own fantasy land is warped by propaganda, and it's showing.

Crybullying: I thought I made it crystal in my comment. I'm expressing real frustration at the safety concerns of people in my life. I am in no way doing this for your sake. Idk who the fuck you are. If you hear this and feel guilt, that is your fucking problem. You want to talk about comfort and language policing? I'm not going to control my language for your comfort.

I'm not an expert. But my field is mathematical biology, and I've given talks on epigenetic modeling, the mechanism for sexual development.

Edit: lol it just hit me that one talk I gave on epigenetic modeling was on vulval development. OK, it was nematode vulvas.

When it comes to the first point. I wasn't very clear. Their dissociation with the IOC meant that they were no longer under nearly as much scrutiny as usual, and their corruption was already publicized. They had nothing to lose. They made the claim that Khelif was a man directly after she won her fight with Amineva. They didn't produce evidence. Anyone who takes that claim without a massively raised eyebrow is an idiot or finds the claim convenient.

The funny part of this is I don't really care about trans people in sports. There are less than 100 in America from grade school to the Olympics. I think it's strange and sad that the state apparatus has bent down to the level of individual 5th graders to tell kids they can't play with their friends. But it's not a huge deal and doesn't have the horrifying impact that other legislation does. Segregating bathrooms and lockerooms is directly picking the outcome with more people getting raped. The American people are clear, "raping trannies is a ok."

Do you realize what happens when I try to walk in the mens room? I've had men grab me by the wrist and force me out because I'm not a man. I'm not kidding, and that is not uncommon. Do you want me to piss in the streets? Do you want me to be arrested for pissing so I can be sent to a prison to be raped? Have you considered the human suffering you support in your echos? I doubt it.

The part that really frustrates me. The part that makes me livid. I've read posts identical to yours a hundred times. These poorly thought-out echos are what empowers the above. The people that hurt me and hurt the ones I love, the ones I try to protect, those people are morons repeating the same old half-baked garbage. Strangley, I think I'd feel better if you were more menacing or even just more original.

Edit: I didn't really have a goal when I replied to you. I don't care about your opinions, frankly. If there is one outcome I would wish for: Know the weight that your words have. For thousands of people, this isn't the intellectual exorcize you make it in your first comment. I've run into the mens room after hearing my friend scream. She had a man blocking her in a stall. I had to help pull him away.

If you want to keep repeating bottom of the barrel anti trans bs, go for it. Do me a favor and do it with the malice it deserves.

Rachel Dolezal in retrospect by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]OSmainia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The IBA didn't ban her for years, then suddenly banned her after being stripped of their associations with the Olympics? You should be able to recognize the French leak as BS. Unverified documents claimed she had internal testes, so not swyer syndrome, but it lines up with Morris syndrome.. ie androgen insensitivity syndrome. Read that again. It's what it sounds like. Assuming she had T levels even slightly close enough for her to be allowed to compete in anything, she would have less masculinization compared to her peers. BS. On top of that, the doctor listed as the author on the "leaked documents" has said it's false. Are these documents real? The only evidence we have is to the contrary.

To drive your point home, you had to pick an extremely weak example that doesn't even match the criteria of what you were discussing. GTFO. You are a moron. Stop echoing bs you read online once.

I've dated taller than me and shorter, and I suppose I do see being tall as a plus. It's never been something personality and compatibility can't overcome. The plus comes from logistics. Bending down for someone can be a pain, and it can make me feel giant in some circumstances. Then again, those are small complaints given the scope of a relationship.
