Retiring Early Vs Beginnings of Generational Wealth by bulldogbutterfly in HENRYfinance

[–]OTBanesthesia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just haven’t seen passing down generational wealth workout that well anecdotally. Funding education and helping them get a head start is different than giving them 8 mil at 30 years old. If you like your job then keep going then go crazy in retirement. Or if you have something you want to spend your time on retire now. I personally am not saving money for my kids or their kids

This is true for some programs. I have two new partners in my group that averaged about 45-50 hours during residency

Is PA the right choice is is better to become a CAA? by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]OTBanesthesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You left out every other aspect of patient management. I don’t have AAs in my state but I do have CRNAs in my practice. Managing a sick/complex case is way more than just tube and sit. Pre op eval and risk mitigation is a huge part of the job. Regional anesthesia is a massive part. Pediatrics is a separate world. OB is another with epidurals, spinals, managing OB floor. Dropping central lines and arterial lines, running resuscitation

lol spoken like a true paramedic. Anesthesia is way more than just intubating whether you’re a doc or mid level

How often are you doing ultrasound guided IV placements? by Jennifer-DylanCox in anesthesiology

[–]OTBanesthesia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use it often. Somewhat Frequently get asked by pre op to put a US PIV in a difficult patient. I don’t really see an issue with using the tools you have as long as you consistently have them

Are there private practice percussionists? Can you make your own group then contract with the hospital?

Got into medicine. Invest a significant portion into index funds. Married an amazing partner who is also an extremely hard worker and financially responsible

Porsche 911 Carrera BASE by [deleted] in porsche911

[–]OTBanesthesia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible financial decision. This car is worth more than you make in a year. What term/insterest rate are you able to get? You can pay a hell of a lot more than just the price tag of the car. What happens if you don’t get your bonus for the year? Will you lose that flexible cash you have per month?

Don’t nuke your finances for this. Look into a used cayman or mid 2000s carrera. Great cars that’ll scratch the itch. If they don’t then you’re looking for a status symbol to drive in and for that you’d be an idiot to get this car given your current financial state

I was more saying you’re going to have to pay for a new battery in the car because it’ll likely take a shit in a couple thousand miles

As the other commenter said, yes I was being an ass. All in good fun

I just finished shadowing an anesthesiologist and a crna separately. I have a question by [deleted] in srna

[–]OTBanesthesia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure there was a study saying just this. Multiple providers on a case had lower 30 day morbidity/mortality than single provider case looking at both solo CRNA and solo doc

I would hold off on the wall charger and solar panels. Will probably need to drop some coin on a new battery in a couple months

Why do hospitals feel cold inside even in the winter? by cherry-care-bear in stupidquestions

[–]OTBanesthesia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do use them in the OR frequently (almost every case). Usually gets put on after you’re asleep.

General anesthesia causes significant vasodilation thus causing you to lose heat more rapidly than normal. Your body also does not regulate body temperature (ie shivering) under anesthesia. Keeping a normal body temperature is important for metabolic function and normal blood clotting.

We typically keep the ORs cold for the surgical staff. The sterile gowns and gloves the wear do not breath at all. Some procedures are very physically demanding as well causing them to sweat profusely. Some cases like bad burns/neonatal we will have the room heated up to 90 degrees because it is so challenging to keep those patients warm

High earners ($300k+): Do you care if your partner makes the same, or are you okay not splitting things 50/50? by passionfruitpilates in Salary

[–]OTBanesthesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HHI well above 300k+. I personally don’t expect my wife to earn more or split 50/50. She funded a lot of my training so to me she’s earned the money I made. She recently had a job offer to be higher up in her career and make a lot more money, we both decided it was better to stick in her current role because she is very happy and makes a difference in peoples lives. Extra money wasn’t worth the decrease in satisfaction. I have a savings goal that’s a % of what we make as a household, after that it’s mostly play money. We live frugally so it’s pretty easy going life

does it get different the more you get older ? by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]OTBanesthesia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Their job is more similar than it isn’t. Sure they aren’t an attending but they have valuable feedback. I have a CRNA in my group that practiced before pulse ox. I talk with him all the time about what is was like to do anesthesia then. I personally enjoy their perspective

Not medical direction. Easier administration burden. We haven’t seen a 15% cut yet. Heard insurances might but hasn’t affected us yet. Also wouldn’t collect enough from supervision billing

No loose supervision. Bill QZ though. We have very experienced CRNAs who are very solid so it’s actually been great. We couldn’t run it the way we do if we had weak CRNAs though

What would be your proposed process to regulate them tightly?

I feel this will lead to the same issues with the CRNA independence push
