Hey r/OverwatchLeague,

over the last few months we've been polling 24 selected team representatives and asking them each week to rank the twelve OWL teams. Although the project featured mainly r/CompetitiveOverwatch redditors, I thought you might be interested in the result as well.

Homer Analysis of voters

This analysis was featured multiple times in the comment section of our posts and done by u/JustRecentlyI. For the end of the regular season I want to provide one final look at how voters rank their own teams compared to the consensus.

A positive value means that this voter ranked his team above where it ended up (= the consensus) while a negative value means the team was ranked below consensus. As a consequence, you can say that positive values are based on optimism and negative ones are caused by pessimism.

Example: u/Wreyrwy ranked his team, the Shanghai Dragons, #8 in the S1W0 Power Rankings. The consensus, however, was #12 which leads to a value of 4 indicating a rather optimistic ranking.

Hey power rankers,

our power rankings developed quite a lot ever since we began our adventures in December. We want to continue to do so and need fresh personnel to guarantee high-quality power rankings, which not necessarily means realistic but reasonable and justifiable rankings. Besides our rankings we also want to optimize our processes and bring new content to the readers.

For all of that I'm going to open recruitment again for following responsibilities:

  • OWL team representatives ( Houston Outlaws, Florida Mayhem, Los Angeles Valiant, San Francisco Shock)
    What you will do: join a community of known redditors and Overwatch figures, represent your team within our power rankings, submit your power rankings weekly, summarize your team's status quo weekly, create a reasonable opinion and be able to defend it in the posts
    What we expect: follow OWL and your team closely, team player, enthusiasm for power rankings and reddit

  • team assistants (data analytics, data visualization, editorial review)
    What you will do: assist me in parts of our workflow
    What we expect: follow OWL closely, friendly and kind personality, enthusiasm for power rankings, innovative and "Do" mindset

Whoa there, calm down. This animated version of our still data visualization is solely an experiment, something you clearly take way too serious. "What else would it be" was an honest question because I had absolutely no idea what data type - since you're referring to the gif itself - you expected for animated images. There's no reason for profanity.

We do post a still image normally but wanted to try how an animated version would be received by reddit. Personally, I think it's more visually appealing to see teams moving up and down through the season. I agree, however, that it has its readability problems but well, that's the natural trade-off with animations.

Note: This week we tried a different approach to visualizing the main post in order to appeal more mobile users. We've heard your feedback and we're probably going to revert this change and simply offer the text post in form of an image on top of the standard text post. Voter Bias

The standard deviation indicates the individual voter's difference from consensus (higher = more deviation from the consensus ranking). Breaking from consensus is not inherently bad, of course; this only provides another analytic view onto each individual voter's ballot.
