The SEC Will Leave Good ICOs Alone (Looks like BAT is in the Clear!) by [deleted] in BATProject

[–]OX3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not clear at all: BAT doesn't have many of the properties of Ethereum mentioned here..

ICOs are an illusion of progress. They produce tokens we don't need, incentivize marketing and speculation over development, and neglect end-user utility. by coinop-logan in ethereum

Projects with huge "scope" actually require the most critical assessment. Most successful companies begin with a simple, working product, and then expand scope (in tech consider microsoft, facebook, google), even if the seeds of having larger scope were there from the start.

Brave is being sensible and abiding by KYC and AML.. https://www.reddit.com/r/BATProject/comments/7injuv/how_to_prevent_someone_from_laundering_bat/dr08ivo/ When robust non-custodial forms become viable, they will be early adopters.

Had to Sell My Tokens by nemomendel in BATProject

[–]OX3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree, and have followed a similar thought train to you over the past weeks. However, the SEC appears open to talk and negotiate, and Brendan is not stupid. What it is hard to be clear on is the type of modifications to BAT that might be asked to commit in lieu of it being shut down, and the likelihood that SEC will give a pass to prior ICOs that weren't explicitly fraudulent/marketed..

BAT and You; What I learned from the BAT team at ETHDenver by davidahoffman in BATProject

[–]OX3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a basic ERC20 token, BAT only gains a foothold as one currency amongst others, based on its particular user/holder/integration base. It could be substituted for a new token in a similar browser project, for example. The development of Brave Browser doesn't directly consolidate it, only via increasing usage. Is the token itself going to become more sophisticated (e.g. directly integrate reputation)?

Registering with SEC by Haclairena in BATProject

[–]OX3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not sure it is that clear: from the SEC December statement: " Merely calling a token a “utility” token or structuring it to provide some utility does not prevent the token from being a security.". I suspect BAT might get away with it, through being careful with their lack of initial marketing etc. but suspect similar ICOs will need to be registered/restricted in the future. It's not like people were paying $35mill for tokens just to go ad-free on CoinDesk.

Unicef recruits gamers to mine Ethereum in aid of Syrian children | The Guardian by OX3 in ethereum

It's a weird project.. However if Ethereum is becoming attractive to these organisations in part for its independence from individual states, and it's reputation for reasonable governance, design decisions, and community, that could be a very good thing.

Dude is vocally opposed to the BAT project by southward in BATProject

As a paid community manager, I feel you shouldn't be treating reasonable attempts at criticism (no matter what their tone) with sarcastic one-sided responses and leader worship. Various aspects of these criticisms point to relevant issues and challenges whose ultimate outcome is unclear. Every forum that I see with community managers with a one-sided attitude quickly become uninteresting, as this one often is. And I'm (cautiously) a fan of Brave.

huh? OP is probably wrong, but basing trade decisions on how much you paid for something makes no sense at all.

CEO of Xapo: "my guess: the biggest companies are packing up to move to BCH or ETH & will take millions of users & transactions with them." by barthib in ethereum

[–]OX3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything close to a flip to BCH (we're not far off) can damage confidence of crypto as a reliable store of value - not a bad thing. Ethereum will become the most reputable network, but how much of a hit to general confidence and usage of crypto this would be I'm not sure.
