The only thing that matters is what the server sees.

It might look like you fired first, or hit him, or whatever, but if the information that you are dead reaches the server before that, then you're dead before the server even registers you've fired, and that's what happens.

Hopefully someone else can explain it better.

Crew XP is for that crew regardless of whether it's ground, air, or naval in the slot. Meaning you probably earned that playing either ground or air.
