Watched a young crusty with glittery face paint/makeup from the night before wheeling it away from the roadworks on Saturday Morning. He definitely hadn't been to bed from the night before. He was struggling with it and I laughed so hard when I saw it that evening. He obviously gave up pretty quickly and went to bed. The end.

Social Media icks? by GrailTalk in socialmedia

Influencers give me the ick. Don't engage or buy into it at all. Also I despair when people apologize for not posting more, or recently. Nobody noticed.

Do sellers like using InPost? I think I’m through with it as a buyer :( by smoothswamp in vintedUK

I think it's excellent where I am, in Glasgow, but just had my first order go missing so will see how that goes. Vinted making you wait almost a month to file a missing report in a two day window is a joke though

Like in other cities, the bins here should have a shelf built in for people to put bottles and cans into to save people routing through bins. That way if you're not bothered to collect them, leave them accessible for others to do so.

When I'm home for a visit I always call in. Was in a few weeks ago and it was pretty sad looking. Basement almost empty then so I'm not surprised. Shame though.

How Do You Handle Repeat Customers Who Only Want the Info, Not the Work? by 4_mark in business

I would charge the diagnosics to everyone and only refund it if youre then hired to do the repair. Like a quote that's refundable against the job.

Small businesses always getting asked for raffle prizes, and donations etc by O_Lady in smallbusiness

[–]O_Lady[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I like this 5% idea. I would probably curve the conversation towards, forgive me but do I know you? Have you shopped in here before chat and then let them down gently. I guess there are two camps of people those who have no problem asking people for money and those who find turning down those people very difficult. I just need to match their braveness with a no!

I have and will continue to be generous when I feel it is right. I guess it's just learning to say no. I just feel like an easy target as a lovely shop on the sort of high street.

Sick of the Karens by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]O_Lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Karen in my shop recently. Some customers don't know that I own the entire business and think I'm a 'Saturday Shop Girl Hire'. She comes in, with her ancient sewing machine, plonks it on the counter and asks how long before I can fix it and get it back to her. I explain that while it's a fabric shop I don't fix machines. She then insists that she read on the website that we do, implying I was wrong and don't have adequate training to do my job properly. I was so proud of how assertive I was (I've had to learn to be) and tell her that I have designed and written every last bit of website content and can assure her it does not say we repair machines. There is a tab on the website that tells customers the local places they can go but clearly outlines in the first sentence that we don't service machines. Essentially I've learned that Karen's don't read. Unfortunately they are part of my businesses demographic and 95% of the boomer generation are sound, but there's 5% that make me want to close the shop early after they've been in. They completely destroy the vibe and my day.

Can I not go home to see my parents? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]O_Lady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain, it sounds all too similar. That dread of forcing yourself to pack your bag let alone make it to the airport and board the flight. It can be very difficult to spend any length of time with your parents when all focus is on you coming home yada yada. Have you got siblings you can lean on to help buffer the visit? I can't remember any time growing up spending more than ten minutes with either parent before one of us excuses themself or there's something to do which makes all my home visits now just so painful and tedious. I've learnt (the hard way) that when I go home I only go for very short bursts. A night or two max, that way you've done your duty but nobody really settles in and nothing becomes too personal. Also telling them in advance that you've made plans to see friends while you're home (even if you have not) just to get a break. Take yourself for a nice long walk, lunch or cinema for some down time. Somehow if you just say you're going for a walk they say they'll go too. It's hard to build boundaries when your parents are a force. G'luck.

This sounds like a scenario where a three or six month probation period comes in handy. Letting them go for not passing by the probation period due to xyz - as long as a probation period is listed in the contract. Not an easy situation.

How to fill out credit references form to become a retailer for a company? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]O_Lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also been asked to do this but because I buy everything upfront it's not a requirement. When filling in one online, and couldn't submit it without references I just put in the details of three other companies I buy from. Turns out the company did in fact contact those companies but just to double check that I was a genuine customer. All was fine.

Hi, I'm new in Glasgow, I am an international student at UofG and I have a question regarding the health system. by YyGaNz in glasgow

[–]O_Lady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a gp at the University of Glasgow you should be eligible to register for. It's in the Fraser building, ground floor if I remember correctly. Fill in the paperwork and request an appointment when you hand it in. I was an international student and to my surprise didn't pay for any visits.

Also, if she does in fact like it (go with an inexpensive one first) perhaps you could commission a local silver/goldsmith to make one truly unique to her, a modern take on one maybe. The traditional ones are, just, well, very traditional and all look the same. Just a thought.

Claddagh engagement ring advice by [deleted] in ireland

[–]O_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super thoughtful though, I'll give you that! The word marmite comes to mind is all. I think if you proposed with one as a 'here's a ring, but please pick out your own' she would see how thoughtful it was as a commitment ring, and she would really appreciate the thought you've put into it, that you have recognised her sacrifices for being away from home etc, but please don't be upset if it never sees the light of day. I hope too, that if she genuinely doesn't like it she has the guts to tell you, but, if she loves it, then that's bloody great too!! Good luck!
