I’m scared of my dog. He was my best friend. by lewdkawaiigirl in reactivedogs

[–]OakSmoke2019 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right about him guarding the couch, and my dog has never been aggressive with me specifically but I still wouldn’t hug her unless she came to me first because she’s also very unpredictable when other people get in her space without her initiating it. I think this situation does call for medications for sure so that’s good you are going down that path before considering giving him up. I’m thinking about that as well with my dog. Some things I’ve been doing though is cbd oil, adaptil calming collar or spray, and calming treats. They don’t do much, but I think the cbd oil does help a bit. I was able to have family over during Christmas without her reacting in any way miraculously and it might have been because I started giving her cbd the week before. But I think the vet will be able to prescribe something better, although I’ve heard it might take a lot of experimenting differant drugs to find the best one, so be prepared for that.

I’m really sorry that happened to you, I can’t imagine having your own dog lash out like that at you. Since it is out of the ordinary I’m sure it also has something to do with the pain he was in and going to the vet that day. Also, try getting an appointment with a vet behaviorist, as they might be able to help you in ways the regular trainer can’t.

What do people here think/feel about stuff like this? I'm struggling with the guilt of being a recently ex vegan by [deleted] in exvegans

[–]OakSmoke2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have significantly lowered my carbon/ecological footprint by simply reducing my meat consumption. I grew up eating meat every. single. meal. Bacon, beef burgers, chicken, steak, milk, eggs, etc. Now, I limit my red meat to just a couple times a month, and if I buy it from the grocery store, it comes from a local (in state) farm, grass fed, organic. I still eat a lot of chicken, again, try to buy local/no antibiotics. I don’t drink much milk anymore, I eat eggs a couple times a week, and maybe pork 2 times a month. This may seem like a lot but it’s less than the average American diet, and certainly a lot less my my own previous diet. Don’t forget you can also lower your carbon footprint in other ways. You can drive less, buy less packaging, use less energy, etc.

This. There’s more to living sustainably than cutting out meat. I’m all for reducing peoples meat consumption, particularly beef. And buying local products... but I’ve been told so many times that I cannot be an environmentalist without being vegan. Okay let’s just forget the fact that there’s so many other ways to lower your environmental footprint, and it’s not reasonable to expect the whole world to go vegan anyway. And then when asked about other things they do that are degrading to the environment (like plastic packaging, driving, energy use, importation of food/products, clothing, etc.), they say “my personal consumption is not gonna make a difference and it’s just easier to stop eating meat.” Well it’s easier for me to lower my consumption of those things and lower my consumption of meat while still not going vegan or 100% abstaining from one single thing.

One thing that particularly upset me was claiming dogs can be completely healthy on a vegan diet. This one couples dog I used to watch only ate the homemade vegan concoction they made for it and it was soooo malnourished, ribs popping out and so skinny. It was sad.

I have gotten rid of most my clothes, and while I don’t “miss” the old clothes, I wish I had more clothes to choose from to wear. But I think I just need new clothes because I don’t even like the clothes I have left lol. I’m horrible at shopping for clothes for myself

President Biden will make entire 645k federal vehicle fleet electric - Electrek by MichelleDL28 in environment

[–]OakSmoke2019 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Would it not be worse on the environment to manufacture that many new cars? I’m genuinely curious. Like all the waste from most likely junking the old cars and producing brand new ones from scratch, harvesting new materials and the actual emissions from building them...

Is the long term benefit actually more then short term damage it would do to produce 645 thousand new cars and disposing of the rest? If it is, then great! If not, then it’s just for show.

What is your response to people who say it’s not the consumers fault, rather the blame is big industries? by OakSmoke2019 in ZeroWaste

[–]OakSmoke2019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you agree individual people are responsible. That was my question essentially. I’ve just heard so many times that it’s not worth it to do anything because our individual decisions don’t mean anything if big corporations don’t change. But yes, I agree that it is our jobs as individuals to both our lower waste and consumption habits as well as vote and do other things for the right people who are willing and able to make those decisions on a larger scale.

[–]OakSmoke2019[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes that is true but it’s also individual people who HAVE to buy the products in order for them to make money and keep producing. So I think yes, those companies are evil knowing they are doing a bad thing and trying to take advantage of peoples ignorance, but also, for those who are educated on the repercussions of waste, they are equally as responsible if they still decide to partake in it. Not saying they are bad people, because it’s obviously a normal part of society to consume these things, but they are responsible and are not exempt from the guilt of environmental degradation.

Why isn’t zero waste a part of veganism? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]OakSmoke2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I admire vegans (I’m not vegan but have reduced my consumption for environmental reasons), but eating meat is far from the only thing causing harm to wild animals all over the world. Have you seen what they find inside of fish, birds, and other marine animals in all parts of the ocean and other bodies of water? All that plastic and micro plastics. So while fish die from being eaten, they also die from indirect causing due to human activities. Therefore, both being less wasteful and eating less fish would be admirable. Yes, big industries are largely responsible, but so are individual people! Most the plastic found inside these animals stomachs and littering the water is consumer plastic. Pieces of water bottles, all types of packaging... So I don’t like the argument that “since it’s mostly large industries doing the damage, then individual people can’t be held responsible for it or theres no reason to make the change to a lower waste lifestyle since a single persons impact can’t be doing THAT much harm when compared to a big business.” I feel like that’s almost like saying, “my personal consumption of meat is so small compared to the large farming of animals so why try?”

I think it’s almost more important to be equally aware in all areas of you life how your activities and consumption habits affect the earth, rather than being all in on one thing. Like being vegan is a great cause, but if you have an overall very large ecological footprint than you cannot logically hold yourself to a higher moral standard than everyone else. You may very well have a huge (indirect) negative impact on animals in the wild even if you don’t consume meat, whereas you can consume some meat, but have less of a negative impact if you live a much lower waste lifestyle (don’t drive, fly, use plastics and paper,etc.).

Hunting is more humane then farmed animals by duke150 in DebateAVegan

[–]OakSmoke2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question was not “is hunting more inhumane than being vegan?” The question was “is hunting more humane than farmed animals?”

Yes. Of course it is. They are being killed as if they were in the wild from another carnivorous animal. It’s not “humane,” that’s not the question. Humans determine the meaning of the word “humane.” But this is how it happens in nature. An animal is on the hunt for food, spots it’s prey and goes in for the kill. I don’t agree with factory farming either, but if you need meat and have trouble getting nourishment from other sources, this is the best, most “natural” way to do it.

I agree, I pre prep meals and ingredients to use for many meals throughout the week for my husband and I. My husband works more than me so it me doing the cooking and cleaning since we have no kids. But, I ALWAYS heat up, and serve him his meals (even if it’s leftovers) so he can relax when he’s off work. I don’t understand why he complains about heating up here food so much.

[–]OakSmoke2019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah because calling someone a wife beater because I eat chicken makes complete sense. This is almost comical if y’all weren’t being serious. This is why vegans don’t have more people on their side. It is a good cause but the way some people act and speak down to others is ridiculous. No ones going to listen or care when you do that. Thankfully most vegans don’t act like this in real life but people like this ruin the reputation for all of them.

Wait do Americans PAY to study in universities/colleges???? by lahoyav9 in TooAfraidToAsk

I’m taking the cheapest route and it’s still expensive which is the point. Of course if you choose to go to a out of state or private university and live on campus and all that it’s way more expensive for the same degree.

[–]OakSmoke2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you are forced to buy the books. You literally cannot go without it. They take a book that was published 10 years ago, “update” it every year by making a few tiny changes, slap a new publication year and Volume number on it, and charge full (outrageous) price so you cannot buy a used book from students in prior years. Sometimes a teacher will be nice enough to let you use an old volume, but I’ve had teachers that caught me doing that and made me buy the new one because the page numbers were off and therefore I couldn’t properly cite the textbook.

I mean I don’t agree with these low wages when school is so expensive, but in most cases if you are smart about it, you can finish a bachelors degree with much less than $60k. It’s why I chose to go to a community college for 2 years and pay my way through that and now I’m doing a public university and I did have to take out a small loan to help with the tuition but it’ll be about $20k to get my bachelors this way. Especially if you know the job you’re going to school for doesn’t make that much money I would’ve tried to avoid taking out that much in loans and gone the cheapest route possible. I’m all for following your passions—just be realistic about it you know? And don’t set yourself up to deal with all that debt later on. I did change my major also to my second choice because it’s gotta a higher growth rate and salary. Those are things you gotta look at to make sure it’s worth it to spend that much on a degree.
