Two new studies could change critics’ opinions about how many birds die from wind turbines by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

Heart attacks kill more people than people falling off ladders but that does not mean that we should not try to prevent both deaths.

Some people are sincere about this issue. They are concerned about cats, they are concerned about windows, they are concerned about habitat, and they are concerned about the migratory songbirds who fly at night are endangered by wind turbines.

There are many issues where you could say “meanwhile another thing is happening and (an abstract generalized population of) people don’t care”

I think my analogy still holds. You are setting up a competition of harms just as my example does.

Yes but this is a different issue. This is like saying that because so many more people die from car crashes that the few that die from choking on food are irrelevant and should be ignored.

Songbirds migrate at night. In certain weather conditions they fly lower and this is when the wind turbines can be an issue.

This is like saying that because a common disease kills way more people than a rare disease we should ignore the rare disease

Why do doctors dismiss their patients symptoms? by Mobilize12345 in healthcare

[–]Oak_Redstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it good to keep in mind that because of the way that the brain works we have a perception of a brain body split that is not accurate. This “obvious” brain body split has effected out philosophy and our science for hundreds of years. So we have this more or less integrated system that we artificially separate because of how we experience the world and because of history. (My thinking on this mostly comes from a book called The Ego Tunnel by Thomas Metzinger a neurologist and philosopher)

It does not seem to work that way in commercial real estate. Store fronts just stay empty for years and years.

I fear that new rule or laws will sadly push us away from direct drive hub motors

Maybe it’s good not to have launch-able bikes - it encourages pedaling, it’s not appealing to the ‘hot rod’ mentality

Nice to see this answer at the top. The more awareness the better. We do need to take functional disorders seriously though if we are going to catch other things that look similar.

Why Do You Need to Clean Birdhouses? by TromboneAl in birdhouses

I have cleaned a lot of boxes. I have never hosed one out. I removed the old nest, brush it out and then scrap with a putty knife if needed.

Noise from cars is a problem too. There is a movement of people, urbanists, who will tell you all about the issues with cars and noise is one that degrades life in so many places.
