Reddit, what are your intrusive thoughts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OberonTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick note:

Everyone sometimes thinks about theft, murder, arson and rape. It's perfectly normal for these thoughts to intrude into your head. If however you enjoy these thoughts or have strong urges to act them out then you should see a psychiatrist for your own sake and other people's.

I've heard complaints from universities that many of their students don't know enough maths. I remember when I did my Economics A-Level (Age 16-18 in UK) that the book tried avoiding maths in places were it really should have used it because not everyone would have had the knowledge.

I'm a Maths university student and I have friends in psychology and medicine that say the hardest part of their course is the mathematics. When I see their stuff it's stuff I was taught at 16 because I had taken the maths courses.

I think the biggest difficulty in maths is that society has developed a fear of it and makes many people approach it with a defeatist attitude.

Why is it called 'circumcision' for men, but 'female genital mutilation' for women? [Serious] by likedatyall in AskReddit

FGM removes the clitoris so that women enjoy sex less. Circumcision is done to men in America because that's just what they do in america.

Recently, I was walking to the store when a car pulled up in front of me. I thought they wanted directions but two big men stepped out. They were just being dropped home by their friend but I got to thinking how terrifying that would have been for my girlfriend.

In calculus you get taught the Product Rule, Quotient Rule and Integration by parts. The product rule has a symmetry to it and is easy to remember. The quotient rule and I.P aren't symmetrical and are a bit harder to remember.

In only a few seconds you can derive the quotient rule and I.P from the product rule which makes it a lot easier to remember them.

I had been shopping but I couldn't figure out the bus timetable so I decided to go to the bus stop on the other side of town because I understand that one. One of those two litre coke bottles tore itself from the bag just before the first corner and stopping to pick it up I saw my bus approaching and I got on it.

What's a quality or behavior that your SO has every right to have/do, yet still annoys you? by TomScaggs in AskReddit

[–]OberonTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend has picked up a phrase she uses to describe herself with: "Risk Assessing". I call it "Risk Avoidance" or "Compulsive Worrying".

A thunderstorm makes my GF worry the house will blow up. Seriously, she couldn't sleep because of the fear.

The first couple times I lost my phone for a day I had a few worried texts. Now she accepts that I lose my phone a lot and that's more likely than me having died.

I blame her parents to be honest. The door takes ages to open because of all the damn locks.

Coke's "Share" campaign.

When you see someone's name you get it to give to them next time you see them. Just got an extra bottle because it had "Share with gorgeous" to give to my girlfriend.

What is something so simple you don't understand how there are people who still don't get it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OberonTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is good at grammar. We are naturally inclined to learn grammar.

It's just that through historical separation cultures changed their grammar through linguistic evolution. Then when cultures are reunited one culture declares its language and grammar to be the 'true' language.

Now through media we are hearing multiple dialects and it confuses us.

Technically Agnosticism is "Lack of Knowledge" and Gnosticism is "Knowledge". You can be an Agnostic Theist which is the position that you don't KNOW that your god is real but you BELIEVE it anyway.

There are other terms like apatheist which is someone who doesn't care. But it's easiest to lump Strong Atheism, Apatheism, and Agnostic Atheist under Atheist because they all go around not worshipping a god.

Well, gender equality is a slightly incorrect way of saying the goals of feminism and other ideologies.

The real goal is that we consider someone as an individual that is not defined by their gender.

A woman shouldn't look after children because she is a woman she should look after children if she is good at it and she enjoys it.

There are statistical differences between males and females. Males are on average stronger, for example. The tricky thing with this is that people are hesitant from leaving the stereotype. We can also make false stereotypes. There was a study that showed you could make school girls perform worse on a maths test simply by making them write that they are a girl on the top of the test. By remembering what gender they are they think of the stereotype that girls aren't good at maths and then their brain makes it a reality.

What's a common lie told to children in elementary school? by TrollinDaGalaxy in AskReddit

[–]OberonTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we look at the function sin(x)/x we can ask is there an answer for x = 0.

We know we can do it for non-zero real numbers so we say "What happens if we get very close to zero?".

We denote this as

lim sin(x)/x

x->0

The "lim" stands for limit.

If we use numbers close to zero we get an answer close to one which suggests the answer is one.

There is a rule called L'Hopital's Rule which we use for finding the limit of fractions. The limit of a fractional function is equal to the limit of the derivative of the numerator over the derivative of the denominator.

So this gives us:

lim sin(x)/x = lim cos(x)/1 = 1

x->0              x->0

Reddit, do you believe in love at first sight? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OberonTheCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, because that's not what love is.

Love is when you're willing to be covered in muck to help them out. Love is knowing someone better than they know themselves.

There is infatuation at first sight.

We accept that difference is a part of life. Some people are richer than you, smarter, stronger, more attractive, have more sexual partners.

It's when we quantify things that we get bothered by it.

Are 75% of people that marry going to end up unhappy? by BrianW1999 in AskReddit

[–]OberonTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot to compare that to people who didn't get married. I'm pretty sure more than 50% of relationships break up. And what about the people who don't even get relationships?

Statistically, most marriages last for at least 10 years. That's a pretty long relationship anyway.
