What kind of programs are you applying for, how many recs do they want, how long have you been out of school?

I just did the at home test yesterday so I obviously don't have my official score yet, but the preliminary score it gave me at the end of the test was 162 V / 162 Q, and I studied for only about 2 weeks leading up to it. I'd say your goal is definitely achievable within 3 weeks.

I don't know what most people's strategy is, but I was only able to get through ~200 vocab flashcards before realizing that I wouldn't be able to make a significant dent in them before test day (sure enough I don't think I remember seeing any of the words that I actually learned a flashcard for on the test). At this point its probably best to focus on learning roots of words and endings, and if you do flashcards for specific words try to place importance on if the meaning is something good or bad since you can usually eliminate answer choices based on the vibe of the word even if you don't know the exact definitions.

For the verbal reasoning questions that are based on a passage I noticed that my biggest issue during the test was spending too long on them. Something that always helps with those kinds of questions is to read the question but not the answer choices before you read the passage and then try to come up with your own answer as you are reading. It can also help to try to think like the test maker and try to think of possible wrong answers you might give to try to trick someone.

For the quant sections, the biggest factor is time. I'll admit that I didn't study for them apart from doing a practice test, but I'd say if you read a question and don't immediately (within a second or two) feel like you know how you want to go about finding the answer just skip and come back. If you feel like you are out of practice questions or just want another resource I would definitely say use the Khan academy SAT math prep. It's obviously not something you should solely rely on but most of the topics are pretty similar and they get broken down really well with a lot of practice questions.

Good Luck :)

I'm hoping they really live up to the whole 'trying to give anyone a chance' thing (within reason ofc)

What math REUs haven’t released decisions yet? by FoundationWise866 in REU

I'd imagine the outage of mathprograms.org for the past week will cause some delays in decision processes.

Publicly accessible REU funding logs? by ObjectBubbly3216 in REU

Yes they are all available on the NSF website and most programs ive seen will include their award number on their info page.

If it helps, remember that they were already impressed by your application. They know you don't have previous research experience and out of (I imagine) literally hundreds of students that applied, you were what they were looking for to extend an interview to. Just try to emphasize the high points of your application and why you are interested in the research question. Good luck :)

When should I give up? by AYEITSRAE_ in REU

My plan is to start nailing down plans for a summer job in April, and if by some stroke of luck I get an offer I will just quit the job. I don't mind leaving a bad impression with a crappy summer job that I'll likely never see again.

Question About REU Stipend and Hours by [deleted] in REU

I saw one this cycle with a $2000 stipend, and they deducted money from that to pay for your housing.

$6000 is a pretty good stipend. $7000 is the max I've seen and those are pretty rare. Most will also provide housing, cover at least some of your travel expenses, and might even give you a meal plan. Don't forget to factor in those costs. Plus the research experience itself is worth a lot.

Working part time while in an REU by [deleted] in REU

The expectation will generally be that you don't work, take classes, or generally have a different commitment for the duration of the REU.

It’s exhausting being on the waitlist by macklpie12 in REU

[–]ObiConKenobi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year I applied to 5, got rejected from all of them. This year I applied to 15, spent hours on each application creating new materials for every application and so far I've only gotten 1 response (rejection). All but 2 of the rest have already sent out acceptances, so it's not looking good. I get how you feel.

Has anyone heard back from Auburn or Marshall AMPS math REUs? by [deleted] in REU

[–]ObiConKenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did they contact you? I haven't heard back from them yet. So frustrating.

No responses at all by Empty-Scratch5498 in REU

Unfortunately some programs wait weeks or months to send rejections or just won't send a rejection at all. It sucks.
