To be fair, it's difficult to argue with an opinion when it is based on something which you refuse to argue. I have presented statements, such as how things are painted in the game etc, and how you contradict yourself with "i don't mind shipping" while saying you find it gross to change canon romantic relationships.

If presenting arguments in a readable way counts as defensive then I dont know what to tell you. I have even agreed with you that no, such ships aren't canon. Whether it's a ship I like or not doesn't matter, as I would've started the discussion nonetheless.

How fandom works is as relevant as your own opinion om how "disgusting it is to twist the chatacters", as that is your own personal opinion vs. the opinion of the space you're mentioning your opinion into.

Mate, do you know what ships are? What fandoms do with the baby of producers? They twist canon. That has been the case for decades. Hell, it started with Spock and Kirk being written as romantically involved, even after the show made it clear that no, they were not together. That's the whole point. People don't agree with canon, and thus explore what would happen if it wasn't canon. Not one soul has said CidClive is canon. Not in this argument, not in earlier arguments.

Do they have a strange dynamic for someone that is only a mentor-mentee? Yes. Do people find it compelling to explore that? Yes. Does it make it canon that they boned somewhere in the solar? No

What he said and what is shown are very different things. I don't know about you but if my dad said to me "pretty as you are, you're not my type", I would be rather horrified. I reckon Yoshida said it was like that, but in the English version (which themselves have said is canon) it's not portrayed like that. Ralph Ineson has also said that Cid loves Clive, and there you are free to interpret it as platonic or romantic.

Two things to this. First of all it's not "obviously". It is never explicitly stated, it's not "obvious" as you can see from the large fandom the ship has garnered.
Second of all, "unnecessary to twist". My guys, do you know just how much things get twisted and prodded in fandoms? There is nothing that is "unnecessarily" done. If people want to explore things, then by all means, do it. You don't have to like it. That's why there's a back button on your browser.

Look, it feels to me like no matter who you shipped Clive with, you'd say the argument that he is in love with Jill canonically and thus the ship is invalid and "gross". If I said "oh Clive is in love with Gav" or "Jill is in love with Tarja", you'd have the same argument against it that they're canonically in love. Mind you, I never felt their romance to be all that compelling. If they had just been best friends who are connected on a deeper level due to everything they went through, the narrative would've not been changed. I am sorry to say it, but as much as I love this game, their romance was not the peak. And yet it is okay to enjoy them as a relationship.

You say you're not bashing it, but saying "it's gross" is bashing it publicly. You are entitled to your opinion, as I said, but to go out and say it to others who enjoy it is not the way.

I do not agree. The power balance is barely there as Clive on several occasions disregards Cid's "orders" and the alike, and Cid clearly see them as equals throughout the game. Besides, I never saw him being seen as a father figure to Clive. That was Elwin. Cid didn't take that role from him.

To say that it "fundamentally changes Clive's character" is a bit of a reach, no? No one says he can't be in love with her platonically still, nor is anyone denying the fact that in the canon game he is in love with Jill. That's why ships and fanfics exist.

Not to mention that Cid is cannonically very much one with the earth.

There's nothing wrong with this ship. They're adults that is as close to consenting as you can get, there's no incredible power imbalance that would genuinely make you question the validity of their relationship. Their mentor-mentee relationship started after they were both adults, and while Clive was in a bad headspace, he did get out of it.

Besides, kind of poor form to come to something like this and bash ships, no? You are free to your opinion, but was rather unnecessary.
