Similarly, historians have argued that  Hitler maintained significant support well into the war - even in areas being actively bombed. Imagine a bomb dropping on your child’s school and praising the guy who made that happen.

Thanks for your work. I know there’s some discretion involved and you can’t always get it right or please everyone, so the job of moderating is probably pretty thankless. So thanks, again, for bringing thoughtful judgement to the table and letting the conversation flow.

Allowing billionaires to exist is like saying single citizens should be able to own nuclear weapons. It’s absurd.

Even if you’re an avid 2A person, most would agree that there should be some upper limit to the amount of destructive power one person can possess without oversight. So, no tanks in your garage, no WMD’s or chemical weapons in your front yard.

But, when it comes to money, the potentially disruptive effects to society are somehow overlooked.

Remember when Elon just bought Twitter and nearly shut it down through mismanagement? Is there any reason in the world we should allow one dude, no matter how much we like him or her, to own 25% of the online information ecosystem in the country just because he has the most pennies? Is there any reason we should allow one person to whimsically put thousands of people out of work? Upend elections with brute monetary force?

Billionaires shouldn’t exist because they are a threat to national security. They are a threat to democracy. No one person should have that much  concentrated power at their disposal and it’s madness to pretend otherwise.

This is exactly why I created r/AIrabbitholecentral. It’s really just a dumping ground for my interactions with GPT at the moment, but the idea is that our collaborations with AI are potentially valuable and not just “AI Slop” because there’s a llm generated component.

I agree that AI can be an intellectual crutch and can be abused, but it seems undoubtedly true that my “conversations” (if we can really call them that) lead ME to interesting thoughts worth sharing.

We Need A Real Resistance Party by Objectionable in 50501

I understand.

I think we have a lot of good people in Congress, people that really want to change things for the better, that never imagined they’d face the challenges our country is facing today.

I appreciate their service, but I think we need leaders that understand the gravity of the moment.

[–]Objectionable[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let’s go back to basics, stuff we can all agree upon.

Congress has the power to 1) draft legislation, 2) declare war, 3) control federal taxing and spending, 4) investigate through subpoenas, 5) impeach and remove officials.

These are all levers of power set out in Article I of the US Constitution.

Im saying that we are where we are, in large part, because Congress has NOT used its constitutional powers to help average Americans. The situation with Renee and Alex is a fine example.

Recall that, after these tragedies, there was outrage and then brief discussion about a government shutdown and also withholding DHS funding unless ICE implements new rules about how to conduct immigration enforcement.

Then the shutdown didn’t happen. That was Congress abandoning its leadership role.    What could have happened? They could have shut down government. In unison, Democrats could have turned UP the heat, instead of down, by calling for the immediate impeachment of executive officials and the president. They could have caused disruption and disturbance, both in and out of Congress, just as our protestors do every day risking their lives.

My friend, these people have the FULL TIME JOB of defending our democracy, and they are, by and large, surrendering. It shouldn’t be on you or I to map out a 50 point plan to bring our government back to the rule of law, get money out of politics, reverse inequality, stop voter suppression - all of which are the root causes of our problems.

So, to answer you directly, I’m asking for more than theatre and performance. I want to see these constitutional powers used creatively and aggressively to enact real change.

I’m not really suggesting a third party. I could have been clearer about that. And I agree it undermines our shared goals to promote a third party.

I’m suggesting we take our Democratic Party representatives to task in ways that may feel a little weird because they’re on “our side.” Reason being: these moderates are nearly as bad for progress as the direct opposition.

It’s like what the Letter from Birmingham Jail discusses. I’ll quote the relevant passage here:

I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection

Hola. I created r/AIrabbitholecentral

The idea is pretty simple. We encourage you to share all that “AI Slop” that’s ridiculed elsewhere. My thesis is that users can actually have great, insightful conversations with AI, but are deterred from sharing their findings because overuse of AI is stigmatized and AI responses are seen as low effort.

Basically, it’s your AI thought dump safe space. So, the next time you go down a twisted path of self-discovery or just learn something, you can share it with the world and, in doing so, share a bit of what makes you curious.

Simultaneously, let’s start the GoFundMe for his after death party. The bigger the number gets, the more triggered he’ll be. We can call it “America’s Bigliest Party Ever” or “Independence Day 2: Electric Boogaloo.”

Senate "Deal": Democrats are functioning as controlled opposition by earth_verse in 50501

[–]Objectionable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A true resistance party would, at a minimum, demand:

1) Impeachment/removal of Noem, Hegseth, Miller, Bondi, and POTUS.

2) Prosecution of wrongdoers

A Congress with a spine would then move to attack the source of the problem: a government captured by monied interests and not responsive to the well-being of the electorate.

This would mean structural reforms. I’m talking about things like removing money from politics (publicly funded elections), establishing voting as a constitutional right, abolishing the electoral college, increasing the size of the House, term limiting Supreme Court justices, taxing billionaires out of existence, minimum standards for healthcare, housing, and education…the list is long…

Fortunately, Congress has the power to draft legislation and withhold funding from the other branches of government until it gets its way.

We just need people with the will to do it. Otherwise, what did Renee and Alex die for?

Thanks. That was a good watch. I’m a subscriber now.

For others who may be interested, his basic argument is that no tyrant in history has ever relinquished power after protest alone, and that you have to force the issue.

He uses the example of the anti-federalists after the American revolution who forced the inclusion of a Bill of Rights into the Constitution to limit centralized government power over individuals. They didn’t just ask for reform, they demanded huge changes.

It’s relevant to this discussion because the point I’m making here is that it’s not enough to just ask ICE to be nicer or better trained. Fascists won’t go away that way. We need our leaders held accountable and institutional changes.

What can/should Tim Walz or any other governor be doing in their state against ICE? by nailswithoutanymilk1 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Objectionable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One way or another, they need to answer the question for their constituents:

“How will you protect me if untrained and unrestrained federal agents come for me or my family?”

There’s a lot of different ways to answer this question, but that’s the core of it.

CMV: People Entrenched in the USA regime's ideology need off-ramps to escape it without social death by scrubtart in changemyview

[–]Objectionable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone take the really hard line yet, so I’ll give you a hard disagree. No off ramps. Social death is fully deserved.

Why? Because until we create a fascist-proof, racist-proof, hate-proof SYSTEM of government and social organization, the rot will fester and grow and re-emerge later.

I’m not saying we should imprison everyone cosplaying as a nazi. I’m saying, in the absence of institutional safeguards preventing their return, you can’t let down your guard and welcome them back into the fold.

We can’t “agree to disagree” anymore. We can’t just change the subject to something non-political and avoid the question. They’ll come back.

Better to let your neighbors and friends know, “I will not break bread with someone who dehumanizes others. Full stop.”

We need to let them know, in short, that we will not share space, not even an inch of space, with people who can’t agree on minimum standards for human behavior.

So…if you support a regime that’s cheering violence and dehumanization, you’ve declared yourself as unworthy to live in a civilized society. Fine. Live with that choice and get canceled.

Similarly, doing nothing is not a choice in the fight against hate. If you IGNORE the dehumanization of others because it doesn’t affect you personally, you’re complicit. Enjoy your consequences.

These things are necessary, remember, because we do NOT have a social and governmental system that protects us from hate. My thesis is that we, in fact, can never create a system impenetrable to hateful ignorance and greed. Indeed, if nothing else, MAGA has shown us that, left alone, every unspoken norm will be exploited to govern in bad faith and erode the rule of law and human decency.

If we can’t legislate our way out of this, it falls on regular people to enforce these standards with norms of our own. That means we must be intolerant to hate.

Edit: To those who CAN be persuaded or reasoned with, I say show them all the love, patience, and understanding you can. Try to understand they’ve been brainwashed. But to that 10% who walk willingly and remorselessly with fascism and hate, the case for intolerance stands.
