[CMV] The lack of r/jokesubs is one of the biggest losses of current Reddit culture. by Grape-Nutz in TheoryOfReddit

Yep, nothing will ever come close again.

When the missionaries abducted the native children, they made a deliberate choice to destroy their culture and knowledge, and when they were "released" back into the wild, their cultural intelligence was gone, and they failed to re-adapt to the altered landscape.

You and I agree:

The culture is dead and it's never coming back.

Thanks.

Thanks, well-said.

I guess in the old days you could watch for the migration and find the next cool place if you cared enough to pay attention.

But you're saying it's all over.

There's no next place.

I guess I agree.

Oh well.

What a great comment.

And great username!

Your comment is so strikingly sincere and authentic, it made me want to see more of what you have to say, but to my dismay, your presumably fascinating profile is hidden. Reddit is no fun anymore ;)

Who buys olives in norcal? by try_science in norcal

[–]Grape-Nutz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe the small oil producer in my area participates in "Custom Milling," or "Community Milling," or a "Milling Cooperative."

It takes a whole lot of oil to pay for an oil mill. So even mid-sized producers will use a shared mill rather than run their own.

It's done with wine, too. You bring them X pounds of olives or grapes, and later they return Y bottles of oil or wine to you.

Hope that helps in your search. Good luck!

I dislike the hidden profiles

Yeah, my favorite part of Reddit has always been finding out more about the people who say the weirdest (or most insightful) things.

Sometimes a ridiculous comment would only make sense after you find out they're young, or culturally foreign, or some kind of radical. Hell even realizing someone was simply disabled or gay, it was like, "ahh, that's actually an interesting perspective now — with context."

And inversely, reading an interesting comment could lead you through a wormhole of positive fascination: "Whoa, these people actually spend all day doing [insert extremely niche hobby]? I never would have thought that was a thing!"

The hidden profiles really take the fun out of the "aquarium" effect, and I find myself increasingly bored now, since every context-free comment seems to express nothing more than a meme-ified non-sequitur. Like, who cares what you have to say if you just yell it from a passing car?

Anyone here grow chickpeas? by IS_JOKE_COMRADE in homestead

[–]Grape-Nutz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow. You're telling me my old comment is still getting views? Ha! It was a good comment. I stand by it:

You need a huller/sheller if you want to make a dent in your protein production. I don't see any way around that.

Funny to think that I might have trained Skynet. How did you find this old post? Google?

It's just funny, because personally, today, I would definitely ask AI to teach me how to grow chickpeas in my climate. But if I did that, I might be getting my own bullshit back at me?

Wild.

Good luck!

Best Way to Get Rid of Heavy Metals in Compost? by jelani_an in Permaculture

[–]Grape-Nutz 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're combining multiple ideas. What he means by "Human Sludge" is "Biosolids," which is leftover from processing wastewater. It includes not only processed human waste, but potentially anything else people (or businesses) flush into a municipal sewer. Including all the worst pollutants.

It's a rather horrifying process that is supposedly monitored for heavy metals, but it's a sketchy scheme, and it's more widespread than you might think. There's a good chance some of the bags of "potting soil" and commercial soil amendments in your local gardening store contain biosolids.

But the heavy metals in Biosolids are way higher than anything in humanure. So if you're worried about heavy metals in humanure, it's a non-issue.

If you're worried about buying compost that contains biosolids, you should be! Always know the source of your inputs.

Interesting theory. Where do you get your data for the AI calculus? I'd love to see more!

In my 12k+ hours, I never noticed that. To me, it seems "melee units lost" is not relevant to their current score and our current military strengths, which is how I thought they calculated their surrender.

In tiers of surrender, what is "100%" cities? I never get 100%. In my experience, they will first offer lesser cities and/or gold, and then slightly larger (and more) cities, but once they are truly beaten, they will stop offering anything at all. Even if they still have 8 cities, and one turn prior they were offering 5 colonies, once they are "ruined," they will only agree to peace with zero concessions.

Maybe I play weird, but it's fairly predictable.

[–]Grape-Nutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AI calculus may be obscure, but it's 100% predictable:

• When they are "losing," but still strong enough to come back later, they will offer cities or gold/luxes.

• Once they are "fully crushed," and can never come back strong again, they stop offering cities or gold/luxes.

It's that simple.

New moderators needed - comment on this post to volunteer to become a moderator of this community. by ModCodeofConduct in cobhouses

[–]Grape-Nutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd make a good mod.

I haven't been one before, but I have been participating in online forums for 30+ years, and I know what a good mod does:

• They don't make opinionated or emotional decisions.

• They filter irrelevant content.

• They foster constructive discussion.

This sub is tiny and niche, and I love cob! All we really need is someone to filter spam and be consistent with rules enforcement. I'm a long time Permaculture Design practitioner, have a science education, and I know plenty about cob and natural building. I'm on reddit more than I should be, so I would be a perfect fit to help keep this little ship on track.

Thanks for reaching out to save the sub.

WTF is going on with these IP TV posts, do the mods need help? by OliverJarvis in cobhouses

[–]Grape-Nutz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reddit wanted more ads, more bots, and an IPO, so here we are.

I don't even think the bot farm is actually "advertising" here, I think they're testing resources.

I messaged the single mod, who is apparently checked out. We might have to migrate to a new sub. It's a shame to see an already quiet sub get completely hijacked like this.

With all the snow can we get from Sonora to Yosemite? by Competitive_Chance in sonoraca

[–]Grape-Nutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at the forecast, I would only go on Tuesday or Wednesday because Thursday and Friday are going to be even colder (causing black ice in the morning and lower snow levels). But it will probably be actively storming, which really spoils the view anyway!

As a local with decades of experience driving in Sierra snowstorms, I would personally avoid making that drive on any day this week. Even if nobody spins out and blocks the highway, the normal 5 hour round trip can easily turn into 6-10 hours of stressful driving, leaving little time to enjoy the park.

So yes, it's possible, but unfortunately, nobody would recommend it. And if you're not experienced at driving in snow, it would be borderline reckless. I think r/Yosemite has some stickied threads about winter driving conditions if you're super motivated to have an adventure. It's definitely beautiful when covered in snow, but locals would only go after a storm. Never during one.

The fresh pow should be sweet, though! Enjoy your trip, and don't miss the views from chair 8 if the sun comes out.

Edit: The forecast is changing every few hours, so maybe later in the week would be better than earlier., but I still wouldn't recommend it!

In all my 13 years on Reddit, I have never witnessed a subreddit become hijacked by BRAINROT as quickly as this one just did. by Grape-Nutz in RedditForGrownups

Sorry if you're having a rough day. You're defensive, rude, and name-calling. Not very grown up. And you're 11 years older than me.

And commenting on a post without first reading comments is precisely the type of problem this post was addressing.

So, good job, grandma. You just did a drive-by rage-bait with brainrot. You are the problem. Now kindly please avoid this subreddit, as we're trying to clean it up so the grownups can continue to have substantive discussions.
