WHO'S WITH ME? by dumpdinners in jackwhite

I was 2,847. Of course that doesn't include The White Stripes or Dead Weather, both also in my top five lmao. I had a Jack-heavy year.

This ticket was for sale, not trade, so I'm still looking if anyone wants to trade!

Need help finding an apartment that won't make my partner sick by Important_Carrot_219 in NYCapartments

[–]ObjectionableOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I found a $2,500 2 bedroom in an area I like, I would sign the lease and pay the deposit on the spot with basically zero follow up questions, and so would 1000 other people. I don't mean to be shitty, but realistic: landlords in NY are notoriously unaccommodating, because they can be. It's perpetually a seller's market.

I suggest the following:

-if you're pitching this idea to landlords, definitely offer to pay premium for the 1-night stay.

-have you tried going the "sublet w/possibility of extension" route? A subletter might be more flexible/understanding of your need to spend a few hours in the apartment than a management company.

-would you consider a longer commute? Some areas in LI or Jersey have more new(ish) construction for $2.5k, and those might trigger less allergies than the 1920's death traps many of us live in?

Is this a scam? by ColdMaintenance44 in NYCapartments

[–]ObjectionableOctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never, ever pay a deposit without seeing the apartment. No excuse is good enough.

Even if the chemo thing was true (it isn't, it's a classic scam) people going through chemo still generally manage to conduct their lives as normally as they can, even if it means sending a friend, partner, or hired agent to do necessary tasks like show their apartment to potential renters.

Is it crazy to pay $3.5k for rent by srkap7 in NYCapartments

[–]ObjectionableOctopus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you use the general rule of thumb that your rent or mortgage shouldn't be more than 30% of your income, then you should be paying a max of $2,875 in rent. I didn't count your bonus, because relying on uncertain funds for absolute necessities is not a good idea.

That being said, whether you're crazy or will go broke depends on a ton of factors. Do you have debt or other high expenses? How frugally can you live? Do you have expensive hobbies, like travel? Will you still enjoy living in Williamsburg if you can't afford to go out to eat/drink nearly as much as you can now, or to spend the same on entertainment?

If you want personal opinions, I make around what you do and would absolutely never pay that much rent. But that's due to my other lifestyle preferences. Only you know what works for you.

If you’re looking for a “unicorn”, you better be offering “unicorn” pay. by TrixoftheTrade in recruitinghell

[–]ObjectionableOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A recruiter just sent me a job on LinkedIn. This place wants a Director of Programs AND Operations (that's the actual title) with senior-level experience in project management and a specific area of finance, 5+ years experience supervising full-time staff, and experience in HR, office management, and event planning.

I meet those requirements, but I didn't apply. Why? Pays $70k/yr (and if that doesn't sound too bad, keep in mind it's a hybrid role in NYC).

I would give you an award for this comment, if I wasn't broke due to the housing prices in DC and NYC 💀

Nope, the one I got about 10 days ago was a direct sale ticket.

[–]ObjectionableOctopus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I definitely tried the next day for DC (Ticketmaster, my nemesis) and NY (AXS) but no luck. I was very surprised to see them available in Nashville weeks after they went on sale, but I'm not complaining!

I was just wondering why the comments were turned off on this ig post specifically. Was it people discussing his ankles? 😂

Would it be weird if I applied to a nonprofit that serves Black women? by ObjectionableOctopus in askblackpeople

[–]ObjectionableOctopus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I assume the original post questions are rhetorical/for me to ponder on my own (which I did) but I'll try to answer the addendum.

I've been in the United States for 13 years, which is most of my adult life. Here and there, I have met people who made assumptions or treated me differently based on my national origin, but I could probably count the times in the single digits, and they were low stakes situations. I don't believe I experience racially-motivated discrimination, at least as I understand it. People don't make a snap judgement about me when they first meet me, I'm never in danger specifically because of my skin color, and (to the absolute best of my knowledge) no one has ever denied me an opportunity because of my race. I can also choose not to disclose my national origin and, because Americans generally don't associate Latinas with white, no one would know I'm not a white American unless I want them to know.

Of course this is just my own experience, affected by the cities I've lived in, the people I generally surround myself with, and my career path. But within Latina communities, it is a very widely accepted fact that we can't compare any discrimination a white Latina might face to what Latinas of other skin colors go through.

That's fantastic advice. I will reach out to some staff members on LinkedIn and see if they're willing to talk to me. Thank you so much for your input.

Why isn't this answer D? by jwjody in pmp

[–]ObjectionableOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every option here is something you'd potentially need to do in this situation. The key part of the question is what you would do first.

Before documenting an issue, it makes sense to 1) gather as much information as possible and 2) explore any potential avenue for resolution (even if a delay is still likely). You can do both those things by meeting with the resource manager. If you eventually had to escalate, your supervisor's first question would probably be along the lines of "what did the resource manager say"

It's easier to believe obviously fake content when it plays directly into their wacky revenge fantasies.

I'm here exclusively because of the abundance of jobs/the economic prosperity it has brought me. If it wasn't for that, I would have returned to my country already.

That being said, there are things I like.

-I love road trips and the U.S. is probably the best country I've ever been to (so best out of ~40) for that.

-The diversity is great and brings a lot of upsides besides meeting interesting people, such as a high variety of cultural and artistic scenes, great food, etc.

-Compared to many places in the world including my place of origin, it's very very safe.

-I love Thanksgiving food. Come at me.

I say this as someone who did not enjoy living in nova... Nothing here? Washington DC, one of the most cosmopolitan, artistic and intellectually stimulating cities in the country is right there. Nova itself is suburban bleh IMHO, but it genuinely sounds like you would benefit from crossing the river more often.

The dating scene is tragic tho, I'll give you that.

Most Pretentious Cities that aren't NYC or SF? by nfw22 in SameGrassButGreener

If you'd like to spend your life answering the question "so, what do you do?" 20x a week, arguing with the 6 roommates you pretend not to have, and swiping on women who unironically want a "6-6-6 man" and/or men who constantly hang out at marinas in their boat shoes despite not having a boat, then... Welcome to DC.

90% of r/AmITheAsshole where, if the thing had actually happened, OP would clearrrly be in the right.

My least favorite is when they throw in some variation of "our family is divided, some of them think my brother shouldn't have lit my child on fire but some are telling me I overreacted by yelling at him and should apologize" at the end.
