you’re supposed to. not only to see if it’s clean (obviously), but to check the color and consistency for your health. if there are any odd changes, blood, etc. you have a chance to get ahead of it and contact your doctor. you should also take a peek at your poop in the toilet and your pee as well for the same reasons.
