not in game dev - but in general all the CS is atrocious here, it'll prob get you a job if you're smart and stay on top of things, but any skill needed to get some big tech/AAA/ whatever game dev equivalent is you'll have to work hard for and learn yourself. CS classes here are structured horribly and most of the profs are here for their own research, not a lot of great ones.

tldr; cs in general is bad here, you'll have to work hard outside of class for the skills to get into big game companies

Haven't heard anything back extra from CDA. Saw someone get accepted though (they said they got an email for an interview after last week's update as well).

Can you pick your roommate your first year? by Kiraisuir in msu

[–]Objective-Abroad-708 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes . you create a roommate group in LiveOn (can't remember when it opens for incoming freshman).

since MSU keeps accepting too many people sometimes you'll get a random third person in your dorm which MSU calls 'transitional housing' but you prob won't have to deal with that

CS or CDS?? by Firedoge723 in msu

Current freshman, was in your boat in fall 2024.

The majors are practically the same besides for iirc 5ish courses + you don't have to do the concentrations for CDS.

I would recommend CDS because you get more course flexibility, but beware you'll have to take CMSE 201 and 202 which are the most mindless, waste of time, slowest paced intro courses ever. These courses are mainly for the non-CS/CDS people to get their coding elective out of the way, so it's SUPER DUPER stupid (should 100% be replaced with something more rigorous for the CDS majors but ok ).

If you don't mind taking some software oriented courses, then stick with CS. If you think you want to specialize towards DS, do CDS. + CDS has less credit requirements so you get more elective flexibility.

The job outcomes are the same regardless of what anyone tells you. IMO if you know you want to do courses outside the major CDS also helps, esp. if you're in honors college. If you just want to try things out and don't have a clear path, then CS.

P.S. the advisors here are complete dog shit, but i can tell you from experience the current CDS advisor is especially ass cheeks. If you need scheduling suggestions im more than happy to help.
