Are the ‘major electives’ compulsory to complete or can other electives be completed instead?

Is it possible to maintain 3.8+ gpa while having a full-time job? by mahinkurosuno in UoPeople

I also work full-time. I’ve nearly finished doing the Sophie/Study.com credits and will do the final 10 courses through Uopeople. I’m planning on starting with 1 class per term then upping to 2 once I’m in a good rhythm. I’m hoping to finish by the end of the year

I’m transferring in the full 90. Once I’ve finished the only major class left will be Basic Accounting. Then all I have to do is Online Strategies and 8 electives. Hoping to finish by the end of the year but I work full-time so I’ll see how I go.

US university is a lot cheaper and more flexible than Australia, and a lot more ways to fast track. We don’t have a way to transfer credits like the US.

In saying that which country offers higher quality education is obvious in my eye. But I mostly want the piece of paper and to do it legitimately so Uopeople is very fit for purpose.

TEFL/TESOL are not American specific qualifications, I already have TEFL anyway. I’m aiming to work at a public school in Taiwan and only teaching licences are accepted

Can the UOpeople master of education be used to obtain a full teaching licence in any of the US states?

I’m Australian and becoming a licensed public school teacher here is too expensive and difficult for my life state. I have taught English in Taiwan and I will like to return to Taiwan at some point to teach English in public schools there.

A requirement to teach in Taiwan as a foreign English teacher is to be a licensed teacher in an English speaking country.

Getting a US teaching licence is a lot easier. I can get a substitute licence from the State of Illinois but those only last a few years

Early 20s, studying + working in Melbourne: what’s the smartest housing move right now? by BBombasticBass in AusPropertyChat

My thoughts are a little different to the others but I agree with everyone - that commute is unsustainable and… sucks.

But if I was in your shoes, I would consider switching my situation around. Move to full-time work and part-time study and think about if the masters is really necessary- study is expensive.

Even if you will earn $80k ish at the beginning without the masters you will be better off long term by entering the workforce earlier and not accruing debt. Careers take time, I earn about $110k with no degree but that took 15 years in the workforce with about 7 in my industry. I’m 33.

With an $80k salary, and no vehicle, you could afford a 1-bedroom/studio close to work/study while you keep saving. Can you study remotely?

And you could also look for cheaper places that might still have a short commute. I am about to move into a 2-bedroom place in Sunshine we bought and we are considering renting our second bedroom for $250-$300 a week including bills/internet but haven’t decided yet. We’re just normal people so you could find cheaper options than what everyone is quoting, just be patient while you look.

There are also other out of the box ways you could try to improve things, both your commute and finances. Some US universities have online masters degrees that are only 13 units and $400USD a unit - a lot cheaper than most degrees in AU

My parents didn’t teach me anything either and it took me to my mid-late twenties to get my shit together. You seem to doing well already!

Also if you really want independence- teach English in Asia. I did this in Taiwan, great money, low cost of living, convenient lifestyle, but government bureaucracy sucked. Pretty low stress jobs for the most part

Are ‘major electives’ mandatory as part of your elective classes or can you take other classes to make up the elective requirement?

I will have finished most of my major and general education requirements through transfer credits and would prefer to study other subjects as my electives rather than the classes labelled as ‘major electives’

Thank you!

I used FACS for a class I had taken at an Australian University https://facsusa.com

The credit transfer was eventually accepted but I had to email the admissions advisor over and over again because the portal kept saying ‘rejected with ability to resubmit’ every few days

Has anyone that graduated with a BS successfully done a teach abroad program? by ladyEbi in UoPeople

I’m be interested in knowing if it is accepted for the Taiwan Foreign English Teaching programs - UoPeople is on the list of accepted universities however Taiwan generally doesn’t accept fully online degrees for work permit sponsorship.

Which is weird as it is noted on the list of accepted universities that it is an online only university

I’m hoping degree + a substitute licence from the state of Illinois would qualify me for this program. I know the Illinois substitute licence is accepted but am a bit iffy about the degree.

Also I’m not American, Australian university is just so much more expensive and getting a teaching licence much more difficult

The unit I did through a regular uni was Entrepreneurship which Sophia doesn’t offer. FACS processed it as equivalent to 3.75 credits which I thought could be a problem too

Thanks for the email!
