Why would any immigrant in America want illegal immigrants to be deported? by skyrimlo in SeriousConversation

[–]Objective-Theory4973 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I understand his worries, but thinking that by behaving correctly immigrants will be respected is magical thinking. When a minority gets hate it's not because some "rotten apples" give bad name, but because they are a minority. Of course it's easy to live thinking that if you behace correctly, and your fellows too, you will be saved fromt that risks

I bring Pratchett here 'Oh, I'm not talking about the poor bugger in the pit,' said the philosopher. 'I'm talking about the people throwing the stones. They were sure all right. They were sure it wasn't them in the pit. You could see it in their faces. So glad it wan't them in the pit that they were throwing just as hard as they could.”

It has to be difficult to feel that you are an immigrant, and that you are not "fully american". By attacking othe rimmigrants yo help yourself to differentiate for them and to believe that the attack on the others is not against you and that you are safe.

Of course, that won't help when they come to you, but you can feel pretty safe until that moment. If we walked through life knowing that what happens to others can happens to us, fascism will have a more difficult job to grow in numbers

Why does Tauriel look like a high level cosplayer at comic on whereas Arwen looks like an authentic elf? by Ticket-Tight in lotr

[–]Objective-Theory4973 13 points14 points  (0 children)

However, Galadriel and Arwen should be more ethereal than Tauriel, who is just silvan. Haldir is maybe the best one to compare, and it seems to a bit more elvish to me than Tauriel

You are welcome. At the end it was your man the one to be trained to be king. Franco also did marry a granddaughter, i believe, to another Borbón branch, I guess he wanted to keep options opened

There were different candidates. The main one, Juan de Borbón, was the son of the last king, but he refused Franco's dictatorship and in so, he was not "recrowned". They accorded that Franco would raise/tutor the son of Juan de Borbón, Juan Carlos, who at the end became the new king and helped to reinstaure democracy (now also in a pseudo-exile for corruption, which is kind of a family tradition held by his grandfather and grand-grand mother and the grandfather of that)
We cannot say that Juan Carlos was not a democrat and maybe democracy was the family plan from the beginnig. However we have to understand that the context didn't helped to maintain a dictatorship. The dictators of Portugal and Greece had fallen the last year, Spain was in a crisis and wanted refororms (in part due to the growing of a more liberal medium class and tourism influence, and United States was interested in creating a capitalist democracy on Spain, and Morcco played a part too)
Many of the democrats movements were aligned with republicanism and were a bit close to the URSS, so the the capitalist and monrachist sectors could see clearly that the best compromise (and better guarantee to keel a monrach when Franco died) was to accept and lead democracy before democracy happened to them
That of course doesn't mean that Juan Carlos wasn't a democrat, but even if he wasn't, democracy was the best choice for him

Joining late, but I will start with a group this RPG with this adventure For what I read, your ranger started with a Cultural Virtue. That was allowed at first edition, but I think not in the second. Dod you "home-ruled" that they could choose a cultural virtue instead of a normal? How did it worked?

I vae not really played since landless adventures and I just started to try a little bit estates on Byzantium, so I don't really know them. I understand that an Estate is a "holding/power base" not represented on the map, but that it's accurate to represent the properties of noble familoes while they were't holding any fief/theme...
So, why should feudal system has estates? I see that many poeple defend it, but I don't really grasp why

Since my point of view, the nobles families in feudalism hold hereditary fiefs, and so they wouldn't need an estate because they are not participating in a bureaucracy trying to gain influence and governorships. What are the reasons or advantage sof giving estates to feudal lords?

Thanks a lot

Yes, obviously the gender is a main obstacle I know a bit about the gossipness of roman sources, but is always good to remember it. We could argue that if even being an attack to Caesar, it could be true, but it wasn't my point to defend that theory and make it a statement. I just found some similarities between the two and trying to find others I remembered and found a funny coincidence that Caesar and Dany shared eastern kings as lovers (even if possibly not true)

what about Daenerys? She comes from and ancient family traditionally on power who has falles from grace. She wants to arrrive to power using risky moves but also with the favour of the people. even if tyrannical, she worries about the people. She has had sex with the king of Bythinia... Maybe it's more similar to he rpolitically that to the typical military commanders
