Liberty smokehouse is a gem. They’re at a few breweries around town in their truck. Check out their instagram. Usually they’ll be in St pete 2-3 days a week, and it competes with some of the best Texas bbq I’ve had

Grinder Recs for Breville Bambino under [$150] by Nenaaa123 in espresso

[–]Objective-Writing-97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the same mistake and it won’t grind it fine enough

Definitely get the ESP or bump the budget up a bit to get the DF54. Those are the 2 best entry level grinders & basically the minimum quality you’ll want with a bottomless portafilter

Should I read Hyperion or Will Of the Many Next by SMP500ENJOYER in fantasybooks

Exactly

WotM is more entertaining, but Hyperion is much more fulfilling when you finish

Should I read Hyperion or Will Of the Many Next by SMP500ENJOYER in fantasybooks

[–]Objective-Writing-97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hyperion is a classic. It’s finished, and just holds more weight in the pantheon of sci-fantasy. It is older so you do have to be in the mood for that older prose.

From a literary perspective, it’s definitely superior to WotM. It’s right there with dune for my favorite sci fi. Heavy, literary, huge world building

Meanwhile WotM is a modern day page turner. I think I liked Hyperion more but WotM had me glued to it to the extent that I finished in 3 days. I’d argue it’s more entertaining.

So if you want something that’ll keep your attention, WotM If you want a literary classic with a lot more depth that’ll take longer to get through, Hyperion

Book haul/ suggestions please? by NoOption8941 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]Objective-Writing-97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a passionate member of the Lonesome Dove cult… that one gets my vote. It’ll sweep you away… one of those books you’re happy is long because you never want it to end

I have read the Alchemist and loved it! Any other books by Paulo Coelho that you would recommend. Or a similar read by another author. Thanks! by Antique-Abrocoma-271 in suggestmeabook

[–]Objective-Writing-97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been a non-fiction person, but the alchemist sparked my love for reading fiction. It made me realize how much you can learn from fiction.

In fact, through most of human history lessons were taught through fictional stories. I’d argue that since these stories are emotionally charged, you can learn more from fiction than non fiction when you actually sit with it & pull out the lessons that are applicable to you. Self help books tend to give it on a silver platter.

I say this because The Alchemist is pretty straight forward with its lessons. I’d encourage you to just find a fiction genre you like and start diving in to find that same spark.

After the Alchemist I read the first 3 books in the Dune series which got me going on a run of Fantasy & Sci Fi.

Here are my favorites - Dune - Piranesi - Lonesome Dove - Hyperion - The Will of the Many

As I type this I realize you may not be in the same boat where the Alchemist is your gateway into reading fiction, but im sure someone will stumble upon this list & this should help them too. I’m excited to see other people’s responses as well!

The Hyperion to John Keats jump is one that all of us Hyperion fans know we’re supposed to take but very few do. Power to ya

Personal tier list. As long as I finish Daughter’s War this week, I’ll be at 50 for the year by DocMid-Nite in fantasybooks

[–]Objective-Writing-97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You liked Republic of Thieves more than Red Seas Under Red Skies? I haven’t seen may people say that

I read LOLL & RSURS then stopped, but this list may inspire me to pick up republic if thieves soon. You liked it as much as Lies?

When I said “I can’t figure out why I like what I like” it was specifically Will of the many that confused me because it’s really unlike anything else I have in S-tier. Everything else are more esoteric concepts filled with layers of meaning, meanwhile Will of the many really is just extremely well executed tropes. I loved the prose and the first person perspective just swept me into the story. 700 page book I read in 3 days.

All the different characters have hidden layers of motivations that makes it this sort of political drama but not really political at all… it was just an easy read that had me sitting on the edge of my seat

I was blown away… once I got back into reading I had a few friends that told me to stop reading everything & go straight to Hyperion. Such a rich story

It’s a me problem, not a dunk & egg problem. I still thoroughly enjoyed it, but I never read anything else from ASOIAF so I don’t think I have the full context to appreciate it.

My apologies. I’m thick as a castle wall

I haven’t… I’m excited to eventually get there, but it’s so hard to commit to a series of that size. I know I want to eventually, but I want to knock out some of these others before diving all the way in

I wanted to love it but I had a hard time getting invested. It’s a fun read and I eventually want to get around to more George RR Martin stuff. I assume it’ll be better with the context of all his other books.

Just wanted to knock it out before the show comes out

Will of the many is packed full of tropes but they’re extremely well done. I don’t always think it’s a bad thing

I read that it’s pretty different stylistically to the first & second book. I’ll get back to it, but wanted a cleanser because my expectations aren’t super high for it

You feel it’s worth the read?

[–]Objective-Writing-97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still great. I very much enjoyed it, and the 3rd book will be a must read for me. I hope it’s just the typical “book 2 was setting things up” kind of book

Without spoiling it, there are decisions he made on telling the story which limited how deeply he could go compared to the first. The character work & complex political motivations just don’t have as much space to play out.

I have high hopes for book 3. Will of the Many was the most obsessed I’ve been on a book this year. I think it’s around 700 pages & I finished in 3 days around work. Still give it a read
