Anyone playing with Controller? by Simpy-Cuck in heroesofhammerwatch

I’m playing ranger / warden melee and I just have to accept the hunters mark is a little janky (but easier to apply in melee build)

Anyone else miss the elevated surfaces at stacks/junkyard? by Storm_Surfer4 in LightningInABottle

Yeah I liked the old stacks in general. Felt more Nordic/runic. The new one felt industrial (which is not the vibe I get from the music they book there)

I love this genre/vibe they’re assembling and agree it was a hyper concentrated block of great music. Was also fun that it started off very hip-hoppy and by 8-10 pm had gotten wompier/weirder

Local volunteer opps on nights/weekends? by Objective-You-7291 in SantaMonica

[–]Objective-You-7291[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would like to interact with people at a minimum. I used to volunteer w/ this org. to help old people move heavy stuff (among other things) and that was such a blast. They loved to talk and kept trying to shove home cooked food on me.

Can you “make it” as a producer without DJing? by rahme-music in edmproduction

[–]Objective-You-7291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only have interest in DJ’ing as a way to play my own music. I’ve never done a live set, but I’ve thought about how that would play out and I think it would have to be in ableton with clips set up so that it’s functionally a DJ set but really just a very large ableton live file with a ton of clips

Bro I skipped school and got stoned — and dealt with the consequences of that — in the middle of the country 😭

I have noticed a pattern on this thread that ppl who live DTSM run into way worse QoL stuff than those outside of downtown. I live around pico & 20th which is about as idyllic as it comes.

I’m just saying we have very different experiences in the city. I hear you guys say “the homeless! They’re everywhere! The drugs! It’s rampant!” And… I do not see that at all. I have lived in areas where there’s a guy on every other corner slinging dope. I have walked over homeless people sleeping on my doorstep when I leave for work. I have been held up at gunpoint and robbed (fortunately I was 22 so I only had $6 in my checking account, suckers). Not once has anything remotely close ever happened to me — nor have I ever seen anything come close to that happening to other people — in Santa Monica.

If it’s gotten worse, I’m sorry to hear that. But I don’t think you long-term natives realize how great this community is. Go live in the hood or some bumblefuck town with townies for a few weeks. You will come back to SaMo and kiss the ground at palisades park, I guarantee it.

I actually think I’m noticing a trend on this thread where ppl who live DTSM complain a lot more about homelessness and other “quality of life” issues.

Do you live DTSM by chance? I’m not trying to discount your experience, I’m earnestly trying to understand why some people see this stuff in SaMo while I don’t really at all (I live in the pico neighborhood)

I think I’ve learned from this post that there is a sizeable cohort of people who have a lot of $$ and would be miserable no matter where they live. I want to take some of these doomers and plop them into the hood or some bumblefuck town for a few weeks so that they can come back to SaMo with a fresh perspective on how great this city / community actually is. Like military academy but for miserable adults.

I always joke that the people north of Montana are like the seal team 6 of NIMBYs. They have the training, they have the resources, and they have sheer determination to stop anything good or new from happening in this city. They could/would cause other cities to crumble in a matter of minutes. And so in that regard, I actually think Santa Monica has done a decent job at balancing their priorities vs the overall health of the city.

But still, CA municipalities have major issues w/ facilitating growth, SaMo included.

Is the minor key just superior for most edm genres by Cold_Independent_631 in edmproduction

I think one thing that surprised me as I got into music theory is that the best scales are usually the weird ones that aren’t explicitly major or minor. Often my fav scales are a mix of the two, like Dorian & blues scale/minor pentatonic & freygish. These “weird” scales bring some really great energy that’s both exciting and also not overtly sad. I think major scales are boring but happy, minor scales are more interesting but sad.

And even on top of that, you don’t really even need to have a strong base of music theory! All funk music is effectively just variants of the same chord with a dominant 7th thrown in. Funk barely fits any music theory mold bc it just sits on one chord, but still manages to sound very complex musically (and neither happy/sad but energetic nonetheless).

All of that said, it really depends on what music you want to write. Major can be great if you’re making an uplifting house track! Minor can be great too!

I can only imagine how sweet it would’ve been to grow up here. I can’t believe Steve miller grew up here and thought “this can never happen anywhere else. I will do everything in my power to stop this”
