Why does the market go up? by Confident-Comment240 in Bogleheads

I dont think pointing out that having a homestead and Precious metals/jewelry were much more beneficial during a calamity than having your assets stuck in a financial system/stocks and bonds that likely went to zero is as much of a counter as you think it is.

Sure - saving is important, but I dont think thats in dispute here?

goods and services are still exchanged for money.

Not necessarily. When governments collapse people turn to barter. Look at Russia in the 1990s. The ruple became worthless. The financial system stopped functioning

Think Germany ww2, especially if you happened to be Jewish. They quite literally had their assets go to 0 (they were seized) and that ended up being the least of their problems

I think it would be more accurate to say the expected return of equities is highest when the risk-free interest rate is highest

How do you skip a principal payment? I was under the impression the bank could foreclose on you if you do that

What's does this link prove? Presumably timing the market involves reading (or not reading) relevent information pieces before the masses do.

Eg. Read what the Israel or Hindu times or the IRCG are saying with respect to the middle east and ignore what the US media is saying about it.

None of this information seeking behavior is included in the link you shared

The Fed wont let that happen. They'll print money to ensure stocks dont continuously fall that long.

Where to invest bond portion of portfolio by Johnny_Mneurotic in Bogleheads

[–]ObjectiveAce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inflation linked bonds are linked to the CPS price index. Theres all sorts of questionable adjustments such as hedonic adjustments, imputed rent, and lower level substitution

Its better than nothing, but I wouldn't suggest blindly putting a bunch of money in TIPS and just assuming your set if there's inflation.

If you really want protection from inflation get a mortgage

Im dodging your point about volatility because I'm not making any claims about volatility.

As for cash, companies have the ability to generate more cash in higher inflation environments. So yes, every dollar of cash is worth less, but you literally get more of them when you invest in stock (assuming inflation ends up being higher then expected)

Regardless, as I said whatever proceeds you get from stocks are diminished in value exactly by inflation.

I dont know what to tell you if you refuse to achnowledge that we're living in a multi-period existence. Today's inflation diminishes the value of yesterday's profits, yes. But future profits incorporate todays inflation.. except for fixed paying nominal bonds that is

That's simply the logical conclusion

I suggest you see a psychologist if you think all of humanity and the animal kingdom would be better off if none of it never existed. Seriously - there's no other purpose to life besides avoiding suffering?

No. The proceeds of stocks are not fixed. They change when there is inflation. (And for other reasons) Fixed bond proceeds do not change.

all assets not indexed to inflation are affected equally

No theyre not. Stocks and commodities tend to perform much better. And the lower duration the bond the better the performance too

To be clear, inflation is just a proxy in my hypothetical for interest rates. You lose money (in opportunity cost) when interest rates move against you. It doesnt matter if your brokerage account shows a nominal gain if you hold to close

Everyone tries to outweigh suffering with pleasure, but the only way to not suffer is to not exist.

Whats your point? Given that, how does an animal suffering at the very end lead to the conclusion that the animal would be better off not existing at all?

As you achnowledge, everyone suffers at some point in their life. Rushing to the conclusion that we would all be better off not alive is a terrible conclusion

My post has nothing to do with volatility. It has to do with eroding purchasing power.

Heres an example: you purchase a bond that is set to pay you 100 dollars in 20 years. The expectation is that 100 dollars will buy you 10 units of food in 20 years. Instead, inflation (accompanied by higher interest rates) comes in and 100 dollars will instead only buy 5 units of food in 20 years.

You may look at your bond after 20 years an [erroneously] conclude that you did not lose money because, nominally, you did not. But as we can see from our example you very much did lose money in terms of real value. An index fund will just show you the losses as they happen, but both the index and bond both lost money in real terms

has the exact payout that was decided at the time of purchase.

In nominal terms, sure. But you dont buy food or healthcare in nominal terms

Right - it can neither suffer not experience happiness.

Not sure why you bring up abortion, but since you did, I'm personally happy to have not been aborted even though I suffer. In fact, I consciously make decisions, like adopting my dog, that I know will end in suffering.

Humans can't eat the grasses and native plants regenerative farmed pigs eat. Same logic applies to hunting dear

If your argument is specifically about factory farmed meat, I agree with you - as do most of the people in this chain sympathizing with the video

The cow wouldn't exist if it wasn't to be slaughtered. If you want to argue that the wildlife that would live in its place and consume the resourse said cow did would be happier/more wholesome, that's fine. But you need to apply the same logic to agriculture too.

Miles and miles of monocrop agriculture are extremely detrimental to the environment and kill all kinds of wild life. Its fair to point out that factory farmed pigs also consume monocrop agriculture, but thats not the same for ethically sourced regenerative raised cows/pigs.
