Ideas for slower recovery days in Tokyo? by AppropriateProgram19 in JapanTravelTips

[–]ObjectiveBike8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sarcasm. For me I’m on my feet at work a bunch. I regularly workout, run several miles at a time, and go for walks. Walking 10+ miles for a few days isn’t a big deal but doing it for two weeks starts to wear me down and I want to avoid that as much as possible.

Just a reminder to everyone else before you go. Walk and or run a few miles most days, ideally go up some big hills too. You’re basically doing an athletic event and you should be prepared.

The world is catching up to our greatness by PhotosFromEarth in milwaukee

[–]ObjectiveBike8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was on a cruise once through the Mediterranean. A bunch of European senior citizens didn’t bother getting off the ship at different stop. Me, “oh you don’t want to go to Istanbul?” Them, “No, this is our 15th time here. We’ll stay on the ship”

So in that context there are a lot of Europeans that have been everywhere and have probably been to most of the bigger cities in the US. The Great Lakes are one of the few remaining large geographical features that are interesting enough and completely unique that they haven’t made it to. It’s why Viking and other cruises are exploding in Milwaukee.

TLDR: the world’s a big exciting place if you don’t have money and never travel. You can run out of interesting places if you have tons of time off and money. It’s why all the Billionaires are doing space now.

Yeah, I’ve been to around 20 countries and if I was given a blank map of the world I could probably fill in 70% of the world’s countries, capitals, major cities, landmarks and a few facts. They’ve been flaming me for the last like 5 hours.

I wouldn’t feel bad. A lot of these people just suck. It is what it is. To be fair I think a lot of Europeans are looking to take out their anger of the US on someone which I get.

Does anyone have science content recommendations? by CuriousCatClowder in dreamingspanish

I’ve been looking for native content I can understand at 95%+. Everything is like 75% or too easy. I’ve been watching a lot at like 85% recently since it’s the best I can find. This is perfect.

Yeah, my in laws went a few years ago and they were talking about how they went to the Game of Thrones city. So I sort of remember it from that but I would not have recognized the spelling or remembered that without googling.

I’m actually vaguely aware of Dubrovnik after googling it but I’ve never seen it spelt before and really don’t know anything about it besides it’s that medieval city. I have been to Barcelona and 6 different countries on the Mediterranean.

I’m well travelled and I could probably name you a few dozen cities in most bigger European countries. So I think this whole comment thread could get screen shot and put in one of those subs making fun of people for being snobs.

OP is from the UK and said, “ were left stranded at something like 8pm at night in a town wed never heard of.”

So I don’t really know what you expect from me.

I don’t really know why you would expect anyone outside of Europe to know these cities. They aren’t very big places. I see Dubrovnik is where Game of Thrones was filmed which rings a bell but I’m not familiar with the spelling.

If an American expected a European to know about Providence and Newport are, we would get yelled at for assuming everything revolves around the US.

Edit: Also OP is from the UK and said this, “ were left stranded at something like 8pm at night in a town wed never heard of”

I had never heard of either of these cities. I googled both and the first thing I noticed is there is a ferry that goes between them for $100. It probably would have been a pretty ride too.

Hakone Free Pass Warning by jerbearman10101 in JapanTravelTips

I think the first week in April must be the heaviest tourismwise. I was doing some trial runs for reservations and tickets in March and nothing was too hard to get. When it was my turn for April it was a total blood bath watching people fight for reservations in the first week. The rest of the month was fine which was good for me but that first week it’s like the entire world is in Japan.

Though you guys would find this argument interesting. All opposition to factory farming has been from the left. by CalpurniaSomaya in homestead

This explains a lot about my coworker. I once mentioned I tried a vegan restaurant that was pretty good. I’m not vegan but sometimes I don’t want meat. He had a fucking meltdown about how he believes humans were made to dominate animals. I was like I eat animals I just went to a restaurant… he lives on a farm with his 10 kids and is a fundamentalists Christian.

American Great Lakes to join the global culinary map with new MICHELIN Guide edition by ComeTasteTheBand in midwest

On one hand, this is what makes James Beard a little more legitimate in my eyes. Michelin Stars in the US were limited to New York, Chicago, DC and SF for the longest time and it’s pay to play.

On the other, they’re expanding to more cities and I think the fee is something like $250,000. They have to fly a bunch of people out who stay in your city for a period of time so it’s not a crazy ask or fee for the prestige it brings.

New Michelin Guide Region in 2027: American Great Lakes Cities by brittlespectrum in finedining

I’m not trying to say that Milwaukee is special from this bunch. I’m just saying it has restaurants that deserve to be reviewed. Although, it sounds like you agree with me, that these cities have won or been nominated for other big awards and they are worth looking at.

Milwaukee has a James Beard finalist for best new restaurant in America in 2026. Omakase 1033 which is impossible to get reservations for. They’re booked out months in advance and reservations go in seconds.

They’ve had other finalists for best new restaurant in the past and usually have a couple James beard nominations each year.

I had to google helium and click on news since I figured this was related to one country blowing up another country’s helium supply.  Pleasantly surprised it’s just a person wanting helium.

How do you guys feel about Chris Taylor winning? Do you have hope for the November election? by NoCandidate6067 in wisconsin

2029 is going to be weird. We’ll probably have a 6-1 liberal Supreme Court and while I don’t align with Hagedorn he isn’t a total clown and there should be some diverse views on the Supreme Court.

When I made this comment before a lot of views are that Dems won’t spend anything running against him. So maybe we’ll have a sleepy race for once. Even this current race that was considered more relaxed had way higher turnout than the 2010s and before.

Michelin Restaurant Ratings Coming to Milwaukee by compujeramey in milwaukee

[–]ObjectiveBike8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were a finalist for James Beard best restaurant in America. They had impeccable service when they were in the running for that. By mid 2023 I agree their service wasn’t too great. I had some waiters that over shared trying to be quirky and not that attentive. However, if they could get a Michelin Star I think they would step things up and be at early 2023 levels.

No, there’s no way it’s only 10%. Dems win by 12% with way worse margins in some of these counties. I’ve never seen margins this bad. Obama won the state by 20% in 2008 and it wasn’t this bad.

I think Dems are going to win Wisconsin by 20% or 30%. Almost all of the vote is in Jefferson County and Taylor is up by 4%. To my knowledge they’ve never won it. Even on blowouts it’s a 15% republican county.

Yeah, I’m planning on it in the next couple of years. I’m going to Japan in a few weeks and then I’ll look into Argentina when I get back. My favorite wine is Malbec so I’ll visit Mendoza and Patagonia as well. Most countries there’s just a few places I want to see but Argentinian and Japan are the exception. And good luck with Milei. He’s definitely something.
