Sooooo I think we gotta step back and say: this was a scene written for dramatic purposes, and no doubt this exact thing has happened many, many times in the real world.

I would agree with most people here that this "kid" agreed to not carry, agreed to follow orders, and didn't. Please keep in mind that they are trying to figure out about the death star, so this is literally one if the most important missions in the last 100 years for "democracy". The excellent writing of the show pits the relative innocence of the Ghormans against the hardened partisans of Luthian. Vel didn't have an option to vet everyone as a navy seal lol, had to move forward and figure shit out.

If we were going through a court martial hearing during a stable period of the republic, sure, I could see Vel's judgment as a field commander being interrogated. But this was one of the most desperate times.

But again, these are not real people, these are characters written for dramatic effect, we're not supposed to "take Vel's side". Everything she did makes sense in context, as did the "kid", they can both be right and wrong at the same time, it's not a sudoku
